Hows everybody doing with the freezing nights?

Gladwin, MI(Zone 5a)

Yes, those lillies do spread well, and that is what I want them for, ground cover.
Your roses sound lovely. Good luck with them.

Sanford, MI(Zone 5a)

I AM SO EXCITED I got24 yards of soil to day and even sprung to have it dozed out they did such a good job that all I had to do was plant the big bed around the well pipe and plant grass seed It looks great I'v waited 20 years for this to be done HAPPY HAPPY DAY
Gloria

AuGres, MI(Zone 5b)

That's great Gloria! I am excited for you. Good things come to those who wait. :) Glad you hired the dozing done. Twenty four yards is a lot of dirt to move by hand.

Brenda

Gladwin, MI(Zone 5a)

That is great! I am glad they did a nice job of smoothing it for you. (I have had some problems in the past with dozer drivers)

What a clean slate you have! Sounds like lots of fun work ahead of you.

Sanford, MI(Zone 5a)

oh drat now I'll have to buy more plants woooas me LOL

It got down to 36 degrees last night. This is getting old. It was so cold here today. I think it only got up to 53 degrees today and it was WINDY! Too cold to do anything outside much. Hubby and I did fill up all the watering cans and empty milk jugs and put them in the back of the RTV and I drove around while he watered all the new trees and bushes. Everything looks good but it is SO DRY. We need a good rain. All we ever get when we get it is a spit and spudder. I hope we get some tonight. I think it's supposed to go down to 30 something tonight. Good thing my tomatoes and peppers are tucked safely in the garage. I just hope it's warm enough to plant that stuff out by Saturday. My kitchen garden I planted is all coming up. I plant it all by seed in a double galvinized antique wash tub and keep it by the back door so it's handy. I have glass panes over the top of the tub so they don't freeze.

Well, back to American Idol. :)

Think WARM everyone will ya?

Brenda

Gladwin, MI(Zone 5a)

In Bay City it poured, here we got a tiny spit. I had to bundle up to water. That wind was cold.
Didn't freeze though, thank goodness!

Bay City, MI(Zone 6a)

well im on the outer edge of bay city and we just got a light rain! I needed more!!
you must of been on the northern side of town!

Gladwin, MI(Zone 5a)

Hubby works in Bay City. He is near Wilder and Eastman, so that would be north I guess. He was telling me about the downpour and it was sunny here. (but still really cold, brrrrr)

Bay City, MI(Zone 6a)

Im not sure where eastman is in BC but i know wilder-dang rain! yes it was cold and windy here all day. Stayed inside with the grandbabies!!!

Gladwin, MI(Zone 5a)

Ha! I am not awake, Eastman is in midland, what a goof. What is that main drag in Bay city?
ummmm, oh, yeah Euclid????

south of Grand Rapid, MI(Zone 5a)

It's been just plain nasty- cold and windy and cloudy....will it EVER END!

Bay City, MI(Zone 6a)

You should stop and see me sometime when your over this way!!!!!!

Gladwin, MI(Zone 5a)

I would if I ever went that way, lol.
I find myself going the back way into the store to avoid 2 stop lights. Such a hermit!

Bay City, MI(Zone 6a)

well then---- im in the country no city for me!!!! fraser(6mile) off salzburg-tis easy! if your ever over this way!

Julie found me last week! :)

Gladwin, MI(Zone 5a)

I would love to see your garden, greenhouse etc. Looks like a nice set up. And I love lillies!
Nice to see some blooming.
We have the wildflowers in the woods just starting. We have some trilliums that are pretty nice sized and I always look at them when I walk.
Well, last night I look and ask DH, where is that really big trillium that was right where this stick of a stem is? Darned deer! I saw a bumper crop of sassafrass this year and I see they have mowed that too. At least they haven't been mowing the yard...yet.

AuGres, MI(Zone 5b)

It was actually a pretty decent day here in AuGres today. It did get down to around 40 last night but no 30's. I hope it's a warming trend. We drove to Tawas to Walmart. I needed some more potting soil. I walked around looking at their plants and a large majority of them are ruined. They got hit by frost and I can't see anyone buying them in the shape they're in. They were getting new shipments of annuals though. It's a shame.

My mail lady woke me up this morning with the phone. She was whining I had two big packages that were too heavy for her and would we mind coming to the post office to pick them up. We went up there and got them. They were my co-op shipment of roses. I got a dozen rose bushes and they were large. They were beautiful and full of big red blooms. They are double Knockout red. We spent the better part of the day planting all of them. I'm pooped. :) They look so pretty planted next to the white picket fence. I am very pleased. I saw some double red Knockout roses at Rogers nursery that weren't as large and they were asking $45 a piece for them!! I got a very good deal I think with the co-op.

We're hoping to plant the rest of our vegetables on Saturday. I plan to finish planting my containers up tomorrow and then take my last ten bags of mulch and mulch my flower bed out front so I don't have to weed the rest of the summer. :) I'm lazy.

Did you see how high gas went? Today it went to $4.09 here in AuGres. It's nuts. I wonder if as many people will still come up here this weekend. We haven't got around to fueling our boat either. Darnit. It's in the water too. We may have to just sit in the boat and pretend we're crusing the lake. ha ha ha .........and fish off the boat in the marina. :)

Traverse City, MI

Yikes!! We're supposed to get a frost/freeze in Traverse City tonight. All our cherries and apples are in bloom - that could really hurt the crop. I haven't planted out any of my annuals (still taking them in the garage at night) and am glad I put it off. I usually do best if I wait until the first of June. But all of my roses have tender new growth, and I'm worried about what a frost or freeze will do to them. Too many to cover up (180) so I guess I'll just have to protect my favorites. But how will I ever decide what my favorites are?

AuGres, MI(Zone 5b)

I heard the same thing. I'm in AuGres. I just went up to Rogers to see if they had some kind of row cover I could buy and they didn't. He said it will not be a frost. It will be a freeze. I'm not sure if covering things up will protect them from a freeze. Anyone know? I do have a bunch of old milk jugs that I use for watering. I am going to cut the bottoms of them out and set them over the tomatoes and hope for the best. I can try throwing some sheets over the peppers. The bean and cucumber seeds haven't germinated yet so not sure if this will keep them from germinating and I'll have to replant. My hanging baskets can go in the garage and I can try to put garbage bags over my containers.

God, I hate this. I hate babysitting plants. I had checked accuweather's long range forecast and there was nothing about a late freeze in their predictions. So much for them eh? I will put some garbage bags over my new roses to try to protect the new buds. Not sure if it will help or not. I'll get up early and put the water on everyone before the sun hits to reduce damage.

What is everyone else doing?

Oh, and we're supposed to get a freeze tomorrow night too. :(

Gladwin, MI(Zone 5a)

Waaaaaaaaaaah!

It is our price for the exceptionally beautiful wonderful weather we had on a holiday weekend.

Bay City, MI(Zone 6a)

Grand Haven, MI(Zone 5a)

DRAT is right! I was so sure after the big M day, I'd be free from the in and out dance.
But tonight's low is 39 and that's not guaranteeing that low areas won't be colder.

I'm fixing to cut the bottom out of a whole bunch of old water jugs and put them over the tomatoes about 7 tonight. I'm going to put the hanging baskets and tubs in the garage and leave them there till the weekend. I plan to try to cover everything else with old sheets or something. I doubt it will be enough. If it goes to the upper 20's everything will freeze whether it's covered or not.

I'm just sick about it. Oh well.

Brenda

Bay City, MI(Zone 6a)

they said we should be ok at 38 here but i put buckets over everything!!!!!

dang nab it

Sanford, MI(Zone 5a)

so far every thing looks good My firs Iris bloom is still standing we'll see in an hour or so the thermometer on the deck is at 41 crossing fingers
Gloria

Gladwin, MI(Zone 5a)

Got up at 6:30 and it was 33' (the internet is showing 27' for Gladwin)
The little weather station we have has the sensor down the hill towards the lake. Sometimes the other thermometer we have on the top of the hill (other side of house) will show a couple degrees colder. Just ck'd and that one is 30'
All I know is it is cold outside. We let our woodpile go down in the basement for the summer, and we have had to bring in more wood several times. Crazy.
The plants have their flannel jammies on.

Bay City, MI(Zone 6a)

36 and all is well -chilly but well!

AuGres, MI(Zone 5b)

Hubby helped me get everything covered or taken into the garage last night. He got up at 7 this morning and went out to the veggie garden to uncover everything. Bless his heart. He worked so hard. I stayed in to get my mom up and give her meds and breakfast and feed the dogs. He said everything made it through OK. It's a good thing we covered it all though because there was frost on the ground. Not sure what our temp got down to because my outside thermometer needed batteries and it hasn't found it's satallite yet. :) Good thing I guess or I wouldn't be able to sleep. My guess is it got down to 30 or so. It's supposed to get cold again tonight but not as bad. Not sure if I'm going to cover it all up again or not. I'll check the weather later today and then make that decision. We have the sprinkler on it all right now. I'm not sure how the fruit trees will respond to this. Probably won't get any fruit this year since many are in bloom.

I hope we don't have any more close calls like this after tonight. I'm tired of it already. I think I'll wait till June next year to plant the garden. :)

Brenda

Bay City, MI(Zone 6a)

im leaving the pots next to the plants for tonights cover up=better safe than sorry
off to uncover!!!

south of Grand Rapid, MI(Zone 5a)

Only got down to 37 here...I covered up three plants, but all is well. Sounds like the counties north of us got blasted....in the 20's for 3 hours. They are saying frost again tonight...

Traverse City, MI

We had a bad freeze here last night - 28 degrees. I hosed down my roses this morning, but the tender new shoots look pretty bad. Rats!

Gladwin, MI(Zone 5a)

I was pretty lucky. The flannel covers work pretty good.

Sanford, MI(Zone 5a)

just got home from work and every thing is just fine wheeew I was nervous all day
Gloria

Saginaw, MI(Zone 6a)

Lost over 150 tomato plants in our Plant-a-row for the Hungry garden. A real bummer.

Sanford, MI(Zone 5a)

thats awfull stoppy !!!!!
Gloria

Gladwin, MI(Zone 5a)

Oh NO! Sorry to hear that, stoppy. How many did you plant? That is a lot of tomatoes, and a lot of loss.

It was 38' this morning not as bad. I did cover though. Gee, all that work and can be lost if you just get lazy one night.
