Gloria

Gladwin, MI(Zone 5a)

How great you got them. Didn't know they were so hard to get.

Maybe the water kept you warmer?
Sometimes it does here, the front of the house is 8-10' warmer than the back of the house.

I brought the stuff in last night.

Sanford, MI(Zone 5a)

it was 37 this morning when I got up at 5:30 but warmed up fast it was 44 at 8:00 when I left for work !!! wow were we busy I am just whipped have a good evening its early to bed for me tonight I have to work tomarrow also and we are all ways swamped on mothers day oh hay hope every one has a great mothers day ;0)

We had a frost last night - first one this spring - and it's at a bad time. All our cherries and peaches are in bloom - sure hope we haven't lost the crop.

Gladwin, MI(Zone 5a)

DH warned me it was going to be 39' last night. I opted to not bring everything in.
This morning at 5am, (he was getting ready to go to work, and I was sleeping) he informed me it was 35'

I slipped out of my nice warm bed and covered the plants, bringing in only 2. There was ice on the railing of the deck and the cushions on the wicker chairs were stiff. Uh oh.

At 6am the alarm went off on the weather station. Why? I don't know. I saw the temp at 32'
I crawled into bed just in time for the phone to ring. "did you cover your plants? it is 31' on my car therm"

So, not only are my plants hurting, but I am grumpy. LOL Coffee helped alot.

Grand Haven, MI(Zone 5a)

My plants are fine but I busted a white metal plant rack by dragging it loaded in and out, in and out....
You should see my plant toting muscles! LOL! I wish now I hadn't planted my upside down tomato basket yet. That bugger is HEAVY! And we had an awful time figuring out where we could set it inside without damaging the tomato growing out the bottom. Finally set two towel covered dining room chairs close together to hold the basket and let the plant hang down between them. I had a huge note on the table yelling, "CAREFUL! DON'T MOVE THESE CHAIRS!!!" LOLOL!

It's bright and sunny today so I just kept everything inside in front of the sunny sliding doors. It's still (at 10 AM) only 42!

I am SO SICK of this cold weather...when is it going to warm up??? We didn't have frost here, but it was close. Now it is windy and cold..but the sun is shining. Wonder if the greenhouses are doing a brisk business, or everyone is waiting to buy like me!

Charlevoix, MI(Zone 4b)

The greenhouses by me are going gangbusters. I have a very small greenhouse and I like to go scarf up the plants while the selection is good :). I left everything out and uncovered last night and everything is fine.

It did freeze early this morning, but because I got up at 5 and covered everything, everything looks good. I was surprised that everything did ok.
Not surprised of the weather, which is normal. We always get excited to get stuff outdoors and then go through this hassle. You would think we would learn!

AuGres, MI(Zone 5b)

It got down to 31 degrees here and there was frost on the ground early this morning. All my tender stuff is tucked inside the garage by the door. During the day I open the door and at night I close it. Everything outside looks OK to me. I'm not planting my tomatoes or peppers or anything till Memorial weekend and then I'll check the long range forecast before I do that. I don't want to babysit outside plants and I can't afford to lose them and buy over again. I might go ahead and sow some cheap .10 marigold seeds in some of my planters. If I lose them I'm not out much.

I had two very large Mountain Ash trees delivered and planted yesterday. I'd say they're about 18' tall. They look very healthy. I hope they do well here. They are Cardinal variety and put on big clumps of red berries in the fall and in the spring they have big white clumps of flowers. I've never grown it before but always admired it. This variety has upright growth and won't spread out a lot. It will hopefully give the front of the house a little shade. I planted it between my two tri colored beech trees. It was a perfect planting day. It was raining when they came to plant them.

Let's hope we don't get any more heavy frosts. I'm ready for some warm weather. I wouldn't mind more rain though.

I got my Chamblees order to day they look good but realy wanted out of that box I'm so excited
Gloria

Gladwin, MI(Zone 5a)

Brenda, used to have one of those trees. They are beautiful.

Gloria, I got a box today too. I bought some water lillies from the new marketplace here.
Yes, I have a million waterlillies out front of the house, but these are for my little pond and they are pink. I hope I don't kill them. I have only had floating pond plants before.

Sanford, MI(Zone 5a)

Connie I just know they will be lovely I have lots of water lillies out in the lake I could send you too LOL
Gloria

Gloria
When Ken (dh) & I were at Bambi Lake last year, they had all kinds of water lilies every where, I tried to get some but couldn't reach them. I am terrified of water and that was the only thing that stopped me from going in rofl. Ken laughed at me and just waited for me to fall in. I am really only afraid of the water if its over my shoulders.

I wanted Ken to put me in a pond so I could get some water lilies, but he won't. He is buying me a water fountain to put by the back patio, I think its 3 tier. I can't wait to get it. ^_^ Then my bed there will be complete.

I started on the big bed out back and so far its coming along pretty good, just as long as we don't get freezing weather - all will be fine. I was walking thru it today with the rake and making teeth marks where & how I want the path. Ken came walking out there and said what in the world are you doing, I told him I was marking where I want the paths to run, he just shook his head and mumble what sounded like, she's lost her mind as he walked away rofl.

I have been really busy today, all the daylilies that were on the front deck got planted. I think there was like 80 or 90 of them. If they make it, they make it, I know I lost alot (over 100) due to the gnats and some of these looked pitiful. But its gonna be interesting to see what survives. I also planted out a bunch of other plants the gnats got a hold of.
I even got the tomatoes in and told Ken if it frosts, he's taking care of covering them up. I wanted to wait another week, but dang some of them are 2 foot already.

Well I am going to go soak these weary aching bones. You all have a good night.

Connie

AuGres, MI(Zone 5b)

We got frost again last night. I think it got down to 32. I wonder when it will all be over? I usually plant my tomatoes and warm weather crops out by Memorial weekend which is just around the corner. I don't want to have to worry about them. I might wait till June to plant if this keeps up. :(

Hopefully we'll be able to get out and assemble some benches and a glider I bought a while back. I hate to work when it's cold though. I'd like to start planting up my containers but it's just too cold at night for them to do well IMHO. No early spring here it seems.

Brenda

Gladwin, MI(Zone 5a)

Oh, we only got down to 36' it was ok. I hope your stuff is alright.

But yesterday was just beautiful during the day. I even had time to sit a while on the deck in the sun and watch the birds and the bees.
I even had a beer! (I never drink beer usually, but my raspberry beer I made was done) It was quite refreshing.

My daughters bridal shower is tomarrow and I already have all the prep work done. I guess making about 20 lists helped me. Ha.

I found these little foil cake pans (24 for a buck) and instead of cupcakes, made little heart shaped cakes. I have to frost in the morning and add a large pink rose to each (the roses were made an frozen a couple weeks ago)

She wanted a doll cake. So I found a doll, fixed its hair like her. Beaded a veil, made a boquet and I am going to stick it in an angel food cake (I just made) cover it with whipped cream, and add clear sugar sparkles to it.
Oh, I even found a tiny diamond brad that attached to her hand, so that she has a diamond ring. Ha. Should be good. I used to make her doll cakes as a kid like this and she thought it would be fun.

All this needs to be transported to Frankenmuth to my ex SIL's house. I have alloted several hours for the finish work.

I made dips and prepared finger foods. Whew!
Now what do I do?

Kalamazoo, MI

Doll cake! That brings back memories! :o)

Gladwin, MI(Zone 5a)

You had them too huh?
My mom used to make them for me too.

AuGres, MI(Zone 5b)

I love doll cakes. That sounds like so much fun even though I'm sure it is a lot of work. It's a labor of love. I hope the shower goes well. I remember years and years ago making a cheese ball shaped like a bed and bought a cute little doll in a see through neglige' and stuck on top with crackers all around. It was fun and a great conversation piece.

I thought we were for sure going to get some rain this afternoon. It got dark like it was going to pour. Hubby and I mowed really fast but it never did rain and the sun came out. I dug up some baby lilacs at my son's house. There are a ton of them there. I plan to plant them all over. Nothing like free bushes. :) Even though some are small they are blooming. It's the old common purple lilac. They live forever I think. I wonder if it would be too wet to plant them down by the pond. I guess I could experiment and plant one down there to see if it survives.

Once again the day got away from us and I didn't get nearly enough done that I planned on doing. Oh well. There's always tomorrow. :)

Ok, this is a great recipe for the summer.
In a bowl or container mix
1 can pineapple juice
1 can coconut cream (found in the booze section of your store) (it is just a small can)
1 can frozen lemon ade concentrate
1 bottle orange juice or sunny delight
1 bottle clear Capt Morgan rum

After mixing put into a container to freeze. You will need extra room in the container, do not fill to top.

This will not freeze hard. When you want to serve, scoop into a glass and add about 1/2 glass soda (like 7 up or Sprite) Stir and serve.

Note. Sometimes the rum will settle in the middle of the container. I take a metal spoon and scoop the top frozen down a ways, and stir it a little before scooping into glass.
Can be put in a punch bowl with a 2 liter of soda. Stays slushie for a while. I had a frozen bowl of orange juice with pineapple chunks floating in the middle. It kept it cold and pretty too.

Sanford, MI(Zone 5a)

oh wow thanks going to try that one soon!!!!

Your doll cake AND your daughter are just beautiful. I'm glad it all went well for you. The table is lovely too. What's in the cute little packages?

Brenda

Gladwin, MI(Zone 5a)

The little favor boxes are filled with m&m's in their wedding colors.
I am currenty unemployed and had to do this shower cheap.
She found these little boxes on line for 4.95 each (unfilled). I went to our nearby "everything is a dollar" store and found the boxes (10 for a buck) with the double silver hearts on them like her invitations. I was so pleased. Then I found the flowers, a whole garland of them for a buck and the ribbon, 2 spools for a buck.
The candy was valentines marked down (perfect colors) and I stored the bags in a sealed container in the basement wine area at 50'
(I am not fancy, just that uninsulated area stays cool) The candy stayed nice and fresh.

So to finish this long story, I had maybe 22 cents into each of the boxes. I am very proud of that purchase. (lucky find)

I had found the doll at rummage, and had to clean her. Because most of the hair was to be cut off, most of the matted hair was cut. But it took hairspray to smooth it down. It wanted to stick straight up! I found the dolls boquet at the fabric store marked down to 5 cents.

Now, what is funny is I don't even shop! I go out to get food maybe once a week. But as I go here or there the last few months, I was able to put this shower together on a shoestring. I think that was part of the fun. To have a nice day, but not to break the bank.

Thanks for all the kind comments. You are all great here. It is fun sharing all our activities.

We had frost!!!! I covered most of the annuals I stuck in....but....I'll check in an hour or so and see how things look.....waaaa

Gladwin, MI(Zone 5a)

Yes, it frosted here too! The whole front of the house was white. I did cover... but... who knows.

Bay City, MI(Zone 6a)

No frost here this morning
I dont really have anything in yet-the lilies that i got in co-ops but they seem to be fine
I have one ready to bloom!!
Im going to plant my mators out this week and the peppers i have ready!

have a fun day all!!!!!!

AuGres, MI(Zone 5b)

I had frost too. It got down to 36 degrees here last night and my outdoor monitor is right up next to the house so it may have been cooler. I had planted my wave petunias but they can take a frost. I had planted Marigolds but they too can take it without notice. My hanging baskets are verbennea and they're hardy down to 30 I think or maybe less. They are perennials in warmer climates. The broccoli, cabbage, brussel sprouts, spinch, cauliflower etc. are all fine. The tender stuff is still in the garage. Things like tomatoes, squash, peppers etc. won't grow till the soil warms up anyway so why bother planting them now. I would like to get them in the ground on Saturday as I hear it's supposed to warm up to 70's and later into next week 80's. I'l check the weather on Saturday to be safe. I don't like babysitting plants outside from frost.

Today we planted a bunch of lilac bushes I dug up at my son's house. They were about two to three foot babies off of a big old common lilac. I don't think you could kill those things if you tried and they were already in bloom. Bless their little hearts. I might go dig up some more and plant them down by the pond. Nothing like free bushes. :)

Here's to warmer nights to come I hope.

Brenda

Gladwin, MI(Zone 5a)

Your are right about the lilacs. We were given some tiny bushes a couple years ago and DH accidently got crazy with the weed wacker and they are coming back nicely. May never see flowers in my lifetime thought. LOL

DD nephew gave us a hopps plant. He kept going on about how it will be big and grow all over. So I found a place by the arbor to put it. He dropped it off the day of the shower. When we got home this large plant was all shriveled. We set it in the ground right away and watered the heck out of it, but I think it is not going to make it. Upon further conversation, seems he dug it up "while ago and thought he would bring it sooner" Ugh. Hate to see such a nice bush gone.

AuGres, MI(Zone 5b)

The temperature when I woke up at 6 a.m. this morning was 33 degrees at my house. There was frost on the ground again. This is getting real old. I am eager to get my annuals planted and the rest of my vegetable garden. At this rate it may be June before I plant anything out. The weatherman says it will go to 70 on Sunday so maybe that will help warm the soil if it stays warm.

That is too bad about the hopps plant. I don't think I've ever seen one before. THe little lilacs are all standing straight and fine in spite of the frost. The roses I ordered in the co-op are being mailed out today. I hope they will get her OK since this is a holiday weekend coming up. I'm all ready to plant them and have the holes all dug. I can't wait to see them.

Have a great day fellow gardeners. Stay warm!

Brenda

Gladwin, MI(Zone 5a)

I snitched some lilly of the valley from my Mom. I have a small bank along side the garage where nothing grows, I thought it would be perfect for them. I put in 6 plants last year and they came up nicely, so a couple weeks ago, I added a couple doz more plants and they seem to be doing nicely, look like they are near ready to bloom. The transplanting didn't seem to bother them at all.

I have never had luck with roses here. The soil is too acid and I am bad about covering in the winter. What colors did you get?

AuGres, MI(Zone 5b)

I think I'm the only person I know who had trouble growing Lily of the Valley. Decades ago a neighbor gave me some and they just sat there for years and never multiplied. Finally after we sold the house they had started to fill in a bit. Most will telll you they are invasive but I never found that to be true in my yard. Last year I got some in a plant auction from my garden club. I planted them under a great big pine tree and they're up now. I don't care if they spread in there. I love them.

I got a dozen double red Knockout roses. They went out in the mail today. They are carefree and easy roses so I want to try them. I have to cover them or the rabbits and deer will eat them to nubs in the winter. I spent a lot of money on these so I will do what I can to keep them alive. I plan to put them all along the fence up and down the driveway. I have my holes dug already even. :)
