WHEW!!! I did it!

To answer your ? re: heating my GH...it's not able to accomadate a heater as it's more of a "hobby" GH. I use the GH to store my garden supplies (pots, recycled dirt, etc) in the winter months. In Spring I use it to acclimate my plants that were in the house (from my plantroom). I moved all my rooted brug cuttings, and the 4 baby brugs that I grew from seed, into the GH at the beginning of this month (April). So far everything has put on new growth and I haven't 'lost' anything...yet (knock on wood-LOL!!!). Our temps have fluctuated from the low 70's (day) to the low 30's (this past weekend in the night) but the GH retains some of the warmth from the day and protects from possible frost damage. Some of my larger brugs (from last year) and confederate roses had some leaf 'damage', and/or 'loss', due to the move outside but are also developing new growth.

I WILL take pictures this coming weekend so you have an idea how it's set-up.

Kansasville, WI(Zone 5a)

Pictures would be great. The GH adds at least 6 wks for growing out seedlings. How did it do last night?
Thanks for doing the continuation on this thread it was getting long.

(Jan) So Milw, WI(Zone 5b)

Some of the plants leaves were/are wilty (from when I first brought them outside) but they are being 'replaced' by new growth. We're located nearer to the lake so didn't have any frost, perhaps further inland? I've sure gotten my $$$'s worth out of that GH tho...

Whereabouts is Kansasville located??? I note that we're the same zone type!

My gardening style is a lot different from my neighbor(s)---a lot of them go for "instant gratification" in as that the one next door to us, and their 'best drinking buddy friends' across the alley have lotsa extra $$$ to spend on "ready to plant" flowers, hanging baskets, etc. So, when my gardens are starting to show all their glory their gardens are dying out cause neither (especially next-door) "maintains" their gardens. Anyway, several years ago when I started the veggie seeds I planted my tomatoes outside the beginning of April and created "mini-GH's" to protect them and my tom plants got huge and we were giving maters away! Created the "mini-GH's" from gallon-size plastic, opague (sp?), milk 'jugs'. Just use an exacto knife to cut the bottom of the jug off (discard) and leave the cover off for ventilation and watering and "plop" over the baby plant(s). Yeah, it's unorthodox but it works!!! I just planted some lily bulbs and I wanted to protect them from the tree rats, aka squirrels, so I cut both the ends off of 32-oz. tomato juice cans (DH loves his 'Bloody Marys' after work---yeah!!!) and put them over the bulbs---it works but, like I said, kinda "different"...wanna see my garden of cans and jugs?!?! Since I'm gonna take pictures...LOL!!!

Jan, my hat is off to you. In your zone and your dedication to the plants you love is commendable. Congrats. Will look out for more pics. from you. Growing conferate roses in zone 5? Wow, let me tell you, you're dedicated!
Let's see those pictures rolling. lol.
Kim

(Jan) So Milw, WI(Zone 5b)

Hi Kim!!!

This will be my 2nd summer w/the confederate roses. They were cuttings approx. 1' long when I got them late Fall, 2006. Winter of 2006-2007 they were rooted inside (in HP and water) in the plantroom and then got to spent last summer outside growing a bit more. Then got to spend the winter back down in the basement plantroom. I've got them planted in the big, black nursery pots cause, if I understand correctly, CR's are a 'tropical' form of RoS? Anyhow, the largest of the CR's is now 3' "tall" so I'm not certain if I'll see flowers yet this summer...

Hauling all these plants, back and forth, is why I asked for and got my handtruck for one birthday---one of the best gifts cause then DH didn't "have" to "help" move the heavy pots anymore! My GH was a Christmas present, my basement plantroom, 8' x 10', was built by DH 7 yrs. ago as a Christmas present...

Heck...I don't want diamonds or perfume---give me potting dirt, mulch, garden tools/gadgets, a new garden cart, etc. Oh yeah, I 'stole' part of the backyard last year for my Tropical Garden (DH wasn't toooo happy about me doing that....hee, hee!) and he's gonna build a wood fence around it that will keep "the girls" (our two beagles) from romping thru there. Right now I have two double tiers of ugly wire fencing to keep them out so shall I say he's a bit motivated as the wire fencing is kinda 'yucky' looking...but it serves its purpose!!! IF I HAD MY WAY---there would be NO GRASS---for some oddball reason he 'wants' lawn??? Oh well :)

Soooo...someone else's turn now...!

(Jan) So Milw, WI(Zone 5b)

Wellllll....we got frost last nite :( I admit my confidence waned a bit when I saw the frosty coating and was actually kinda 'afraid' to look in the GH...

I couldn't do a real good inspection as I was running a bit late leaving for work, as usual. I was also praying, and hoping, that I just might be fortunate enuff to find a gas station that hadn't raised it's price AGAIN---Sooooo, I slowly unzipped one of the front windows-just to sneak a quick peek, hoping for the best and.......my brug babies seemed to be unfazed!!! I'll do a more thorough exam when I get home today. A coleus cutting that I'm trying to root wasn't looking too perky but, all in all, I'm feeling pretty optimistic---WHEW!!!

Kansasville, WI(Zone 5a)

Yep the temperature was 25* at 5:30 am when I left for work. It was very frosty.
Glad your brugs looked unfazed, and hope the rest did as well.
Kansasville is a dinky little town. It's SW of you.

Have to admire you, a true gardener.

(Tammie) Odessa, TX(Zone 7b)

How do your root rose cuttings? I have a rose bush... Tree?.. I need to cut down a lot and would give anything to make new ones.. this thing smells heavenly when blooming.. I can smell it 20 ft away.

James, you're doing so well with those babies. I'm so happy for you.

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

Wow! Those look great James! I look forward to seeing how they do over this year! Maybe you will get some blooms on them as well! :-)

Pensacola, FL(Zone 8b)

Well maybe thats what I am hoping for I really would not mind to see a bloom or two......LOL

(Jan) So Milw, WI(Zone 5b)

Hi Tammy!!! Sorry that I did not get back to you sooner! I've never rooted rose cuttings...the 'Confederate Rose' is a double form of the 'Rose of Sharon', both of which should be hardy in your area. I have seeds from my RoS and could send you some cuttings from my 'Confederate Rose' later this year if you'd like...lmk!

Just "ME", Jan

this is the flower color of my RoS of which I do have fresh seeds

(Tammie) Odessa, TX(Zone 7b)

Thank you.. now I feel like an idiot! LOL I don't think I have any more room for anything else to grow. I dug up some cannas over the weekend to make room for more cannas! LOL My poor brugs are being planted behind the low hedge.. they are going to have to grow over 3 ft to be seen! I just don't have the heart to pull out hedges I planted 19 years ago.

(Jan) So Milw, WI(Zone 5b)

Tammie-

What kind of cannas are you moving/removing? If you have to get rid of any interesting ones lmk...I had my canna tubers wrapped in newspaper over the winter and they are all dried out BUT I'm hoping that they aren't dead...

Don't feel like an idiot---we all experience CRS!!!

(Tammie) Odessa, TX(Zone 7b)

Mostly these cannas... and a few others... maybe some reds Need to make more room for my brugs... I have 7 in 4 inch pots that are outgrowing their pots and need to go somewhere. some will go into larger pots and I am going to try directly planting some in the ground to see how they do. I planted them in the poo pots so will be able to plant directly into the ground without disturbing the roots. They all have roots coming out the bottoms and sides of the pots. My Inca sun cuttings were doing great then one just up and died... I was very upset but the other is still surviving. These are mostly from a large group of cuttings I received last fall.

Oh those are pretty RoS and canna! Jan, I need to get your technique for starting RoS seed.. a friend has a pod from last year, she said it's all dry, will it still germinate? I said I would try some for her... OH I'm SO excited, remember the seeds Kim sent out? I started working with them (in bags) the beginning of March, I watched them everyday and nothing.......I went out of town for a week, ignored them for a week after I got back and low and behold!!! I have sprouts!!!!!! YIPPEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE! I moved 6 of them to a cell pack this weekend.... I have them under glass (small terrium) in front of the south french doors.... they are so cute! Thanks again, Kim! I took pics, (like a new parent or something, lol). Now I need to find my paper with the 2 different crosses and get those youngin's labeled! How fun much your generousity has and will provide for me! (still haven't moved out the plants yet, temps dipping into mid 30's, low 40's at night.)

Central, AL(Zone 7b)

That news makes my heart sings AuntB . (Mind if I call you B?) lol. You grow beautiful brugs, baby brugs are much easier to care for. Once the temp. is above 35F. they will be happily outdoor. Here in my zone, I've had them out since early March. Keep up the good work. ♫♪♫

Pensacola, FL(Zone 8b)

OH my I would love some!!!

(Jan) So Milw, WI(Zone 5b)

Pretty canna color!

Of all the brug cuttings I started out with (last Fall) I ended up with 15 survivors (better than nothing...), plus the three that I overwintered and then the four baby brugs that I'm growing from seed = 22 brugs :) Hopefully I'll have lotsa color - last year I only had white. And, I'll find someplace for all of them!!!

I'm praying and hoping that my cannas are "OK" as (last year) I was able to obtain some Tropicanna, Musafolia, "Black"-leafed, and Red-Striped Indian Shot canna tubers, and I really, really am looking forward to their beauty also!!!

(Tammie) Odessa, TX(Zone 7b)

Jan, if your cannas did not make it, I can send you some to get you going again. I had a brug with 7 buds on it a few weeks ago.. abig wind storm took off 4 buds... two were blooming.. one completely open and the second partially open.. moved it into the garage to avoid another wind storm and tore off the second bloom when moving it back out! Darn it! I get so mad at myself sometimes. Hopefully it will bloom again this year. It is a Snow White.. may put it in the ground soon.

(Jan) So Milw, WI(Zone 5b)

Congrats "B"!!! WHOO HOO!!!

Doin' the 'Baby Brug Bop' dance!!! I moved all my plants out of the GH yesterday---they're all lined-up on the side of the deck waiting for their turn to be transplanted into their summer homes.

For starting the Ros---I soaked the seeds for 24 hrs in hot water and hp and then put a couple of seeds into peat-pellets. When I transplant I always remove the netting from the pellets as some seed roots have trouble growing thru the netting. Would you like me to send you some of my RoS seeds and/or a sapling of the white/red eyed RoS???

Ok---WHERE'S "Our Amanda" who brought most of us together and then just POOF! disappeared??? AMANDA!!! Where are you? Come out and play with us...Have you been able to replace some of the plants that were stolen from your property?

(Jan) So Milw, WI(Zone 5b)

Tammy---a "Snow White" canna??? Does that mean what the name implies...that the flower is white??? If so, I've never seen or heard of, a white-flowering canna. WOW!

LOL!!!...re: knocking off the flower bud-I think most of us have "been there, done that"! Last year (Spring, 2007) I had a lot of rooted brug cuttings that I had lost the ID's of (battling the battle of the aphids---grrr!) so I gave away a lot of the brugs to people cause I didn't know if I would be able to care for all of them. Soooo, anyway, I gave one to a neighbor. Later I asked her how her brug was doing and she happily exclaimed that it bloomed (just one flower) and she was so entranced by the smell she lifted the flower up for a better look and smell and the flower fell off in her hand!!! By the way, her bloom was a peach-color! She has successfully over-wintered her brug inside so I can always 'hit her up' :) for cuttings (HEE HEE---ulterior motives...heh, heh)!!!

NE, KS(Zone 5b)

Thanks, Jan. Maybe a few seeds? I'm not sure what color hers is, but I'll find out, I can send some to you. Thanks for the info and the kind offer.. So is Snow White a canna or a brug (either way, I HAVE to have some, Snow White is my fav) There is a white canna called Ermine (I think) that is white, someone found one at Lowe's last year, so now I always check the blooms if I'm there... I have seeds for a white canna, I just got them in the mail from gardenstore-n-more.com, 5 seeds for around $2, I think... Yes, Amanda..... I STILL haven't sent a package to her...I know I have some started of the noid I call "Amanda's Pink Tree Brug... I'll get something together before the weather gets too hot. We miss you, Amanda, how'd your planted brugs fare over the winter?
Check this out: http://www.karcheskycanna.com/ (they have brugs, too)

(Tammie) Odessa, TX(Zone 7b)

I did say it was a brug.... didn't I? LOL I actually have 2 Snow Whites... one nearly died and is coming back from the roots.. it is struggling in its 3 gallon pot. And the poor one who is manhandled... or woman handled too much and knocks off blooms.. well, one open and still another to bloom so I will be VERY careful with those.. have to move it back outside today. Was avoiding 50mph winds last night.. took it into the garage.

Tammie

NE, KS(Zone 5b)

Tammie, you sound like me. I've brought 6 & 7 ft brugs into the dining room to avoid wind & hail storms... Did you recieve it as named "Snow White"? Wonder if they have a Grumpy or Doc? lol We would love a pic of it's gorgeous bounty.. sure hope the other bud doesn't get womanhandled.. it's worth a couple blooms, you could have lost the whole limb (or plant) in those high winds.

(Jan) So Milw, WI(Zone 5b)

Geez---Yes Tammie!!! You said "...brug..." and I read "...canna..."---DUH!!! I am a redhead* and perhaps it's true what my younger brother once said to me---that I have red hair cause "...I have rusty brains..."...LMAO!!!

*note: as I am at the age where color pigmentation is disappearing only to be 'replaced' with non-pigmented hair I have to resort to other, drastic measures...IN OTHER WORDS, my hair doesn't want to be red anymore, it wants to be gray but I want it to still be red so I have to wash away the gray...!!!!

Sorry about the above-I partook of some little ice cream treats and that was my little sugar buzz rant from the little DOVE dark chocolate covering over chocolate ice cream treats!!!

"B"- not a problem, I will get some of the RoS seeds out to you---hmmmm!!!---I just recalled that I've got some other seeds that I can put in there also, they're seeds from the Monster White brug!!!

Just "ME" :)

NE, KS(Zone 5b)

OH!!!! Just ME (Jan), you're a doll! I'll find some other interesting seeds for you, too. Wanna grow some luffa gourds? I'm going to try them on a chainlink fence... you can make luffa sponges to use and give as gifts....How about some sweet peas? Yes, I wash away the gray (I was a brunette), but I'm getting tired of doing it and I could spend that money on plants, seeds, dirt.. lol I tell the "kids" I'm going to let it go gray, grow it long, pull it up in a bun and buy a pearl "necklace" for my reading glasses.... haha.... Your cold chocolatey sweet treat sounds like something I need.. and DOVE DARK chocolate, ONE of my favs!

(Tammie) Odessa, TX(Zone 7b)

I see my hairdresser once every 8 to 12 months to blend in the grey a little better.. I am blonde naturally so it does not show horribly.. but I notice it. Same here, money is available for the plants.. that $110 hurts to disappear that grey! LOL Oooohhh CHOCOLATE... LOVE it.. wish it did not give me headaches. Has anyever planted a tiny brug directly in the ground and had it survive? I have those in 4" pots and wonder if they would survive. Rather do that than have them in pots for a few more months before going in the ground.

Central, AL(Zone 7b)

Y'all are indeed a hallarious bunch! lol, BTW; thanks for reminding me to see my hair dresser whom I haven't seen in months due to tight budgets while I'm pampering all my Angel babiez, lol.

To hold us over, I've this hybrid cutting from last summer that is producing more bloom for me. Here is Versi Apricot, one lone blossom, but the fragrant is out of this world in the evening hours. ^_^

Well KIm your plants wow you got a ton of them I am the same way, and I love the bloom.

James

Central, AL(Zone 7b)

James, you know how the saying goes: one is never too rich (I wished I were), a woman can't never be too pretty, a man could never have too much fun, and there ain't NO way, us gardener can have too many flowers/plants. lol.lol.

NE, KS(Zone 5b)

LOL, Kim, I love it... enough? I don't settle... I strive to attain! lol Just wait till the next time someone says "A white one, too? Don't you have enough?" Boy, now I have a reply! My little newborn seedlings didn't even realize they were planted... so cute in cell pack... I need to get busy here, I'll check on the color of my friends RoS, Jan.. Good gosh, Tammie, you figured it up, (hair color$$), I'm for SURE going gray, I meant EL Naturelle, now! That's a lot of plants and dirt! I could even get a lacey Japanese maple....hmmmm... Pretty bloom, Kim! I'm longing for the smell, I was out of town and missed Maya's last flush in the basement, she should flush quickly, once I get her outside... Seize the day plant people! James, you are getting a VERY nice brug collection together for yourself, I'm looking forward to seeing your blooms, too!

(Tammie) Odessa, TX(Zone 7b)

My Maya just died! It was outside with all the rest and was slowly growing then just died. I probably should have repotted it but was afraid to since it was struggling. Darn, I paid a fortune for that little plant and it survived the catipillars stripping it twice last year. Never got to bloom fully.. one formed and something bit it off.

Pensacola, FL(Zone 8b)

Yes indeed I have a ton of plants but oh well that is me I am into gardening.........

James

(Jan) So Milw, WI(Zone 5b)

(((Tammie)))

I just recently "lost" (killed) the Maya cutting that "B" had sent me (last year) but another kind DGer (what did I mean "another" kind DGer???...ALL DGer's are WONDERFUL, KIND, SHARING, ETC!)...anyway, as I was saying before I corrected myself (!) --- I have a very healthy, rooted Maya so could send you a cutting in the Fall unless someone else has a Maya that they could spare a cutting of for you...AuntB?!?!?

I probably save a small fortune by not going to a hairdresser...I color my hair, I cut my hair, I perm my hair. My Grampa used to be a hairdresser when my Mom was a child, then she cut all our (3 brothers and 3 sisters besides myself) hair when we were younger and I guess the gene passed on to me...my hubby even lets me cut his hair (well...at least what's left of it anyway...hee, hee!).

"B", I could probably use the Sweet Pea seeds for 'underplanting' my brugs or put in hanging planters?

Tammie- Have you ever tried Soy Chocolate? I am a certified chocoholic but have tried Silk Chocolate Soy Milk and have had soy chocolate 'treats' also and have to admit that I am pretty pleased with the soy products---now if 'they' could only make my all-time fav candy bar, KIT KAT (UMMMMMMMM!!!!!!!) "healthy"!

Just "ME"
