Our Visit to HostaJims

Kaleem has a few hosta 'suppliers' in the US through DG! LOL!! I, too, cannot imagine how he grows them, but I think Kaleem is just a good gardener. So plants grow for him. Recently many of his hostas were stolen. Can you imagine having your hostas stolen right outside the door??? He had many hostas in pots, many with several eyes already, and someone came and cut them out of the pots.
Since no one in his area sells hostas at nurseries, and there are not many people in Pakistan who garden for pleasure, I hope he someday finds the person who did this and gets them back.
Kaleem you should post that photo of the hosta that I sent you - the one that doesn't look anything like any hosta I have. Maybe Jim will know what it is.

Whidbey Island, WA(Zone 7a)

What a discouraging thing to have happen, Kaleem! I truly hope you find the guilty party.

Snohomish, WA

We will have to send Kaleem a new hosta and a web cam to gaurd it!

Mirpur (A.K), Pakistan(Zone 9b)

Thank you so much for the nice compliments.
In summers temperature rise up to 120F and in winters it goes below zero.......... Both time weather goes to its peak but no snow in winters.
My maximum Hostas are from USA only One is from UK and the Hosta I received from UK was just one week old but now that is very very pretty and big.
Maxium Hostas are in the pots and I water them twice a day but all are under shade no direct sun.
Here is that Hostas I received from Pixydish..... I am thinking it was Widebrim when I received but now this one is totally changed.
Now hot summer is started and this is a very bad time for receiving Hostas from Abroad. So thank you so much for the nice offer.

The June when it was showing new pups and before stolen. First photo is also of June but you can see only two eyes but before stolen it had seven eyes.

Kaleem ~ those are SPECTACULAR! I can understand why you were so upset. It's hard to imagine people stealing plants, of all things! It's like stealing your children or pets! Unbelievable.

Union, WA(Zone 8b)

Very nice Hosta's

Woodinville, WA(Zone 8b)

Wow. Kaleem - we have such a different climate here. I didn't ever think about the fact that growing plants from our climate is as hard to you as it is for us to grow your plants in our climate. We laughingly call it "zone denial" - as though we are not able to accept the fact that some plants don't grow here.

Your hostas are beautiful - it's not acceptable for someone to steal them, but I can see why they might have. What a treat to have them there. And it's a testament to your dedication to their care that they look so nice!!

Port Angeles, WA(Zone 8b)

Hey Kathy...just proves that you can ignore the zone rule!

Snohomish, WA

There is a zone rule? If there is I have broken it many, many times now!

Woodinville, WA(Zone 8b)

What zone rule? Does there have to be a rule if you're in zone denial? What? :-)

Kaleem is the Dan Hinkley of Pakistan . . .

Port Angeles, WA(Zone 8b)

Rock on, Kaleem! You give me hope to grow zone 9 plants here!

Poulsbo, WA(Zone 8a)

Could if we had are normal weather. LOL

Snohomish, WA

And what would that be? I grew up here and the weather seems to change every year! But I can't remember the last bad May! It has to be nice this month!

Poulsbo, WA(Zone 8a)

I have been here 22 years, and this has be the weirdest April I have seen, rain yes, but the cold, snow, hail No. At least not in my area. I have seen a hail storm once in April and that was in the late 80s.

Snohomish, WA

Was born in 63 at Auburn General, burned down, and this is the worst spring ever! One day above 60 degrees! Stupid weather!

Poulsbo, WA(Zone 8a)

I'm on your side LOL

AT least it didn't rain today. But still, it is cold!!! I'm going to have to start some things over again but it may not be worth it. I sure picked a bad year to get into growing vegetables. And a low of 38 degrees tonight?? Get real!

I had to laugh at the comments about Kaleem having 'zone denial'. I guess it's true, but I never thought of that. I am too focused on growing warm weather plants to think about the fact that some plants will not grow well if it gets too hot. I cannot believe he is able to keep those hostas alive and growing so well when the weather gets so hot.

do any of you recognize that first hosta Kaleem posted? I was thinking Jim might know, so that's why I thought it would be good to put it on this thread. I do not recognize it at all, and it's supposed to be one I sent him. Maybe the weather there makes it do different things?

Whidbey Island, WA(Zone 7a)

Pixy, it rained quite a bit here today - AND it was cold! My cousin and her DH and their grandson all had their jackets on when we were outside, and I (who am usually warm) was freezing in my big sweatshirt. I have high hopes for tomorrow - I don't think we're having any company and maybe I can steal some time outside!!! Everything is so overgrown that it is making me crazy. I did at least cut back some of the stinging nettles the other day so I could get to the bird feeders without hurting myself.

It's making me crazy. Things are growing, but they don't look that happy, frankly.

Whidbey Island, WA(Zone 7a)

The stuff that's overgrown is, of course, from last year (or just weeds & grass where it doesn't belong). Horsetail is coming up everywhere, nettles are the worst I've ever seen them, not to mention the regular ol' weeds.

I've mowed the lawn twice this year, but you'd never know it to look at it - that's one thing that isn't harmed by the cold weather. And the edging I did awhile back has completely grown back into the gardens.

Maybe tomorrow, right?

Woodinville, WA(Zone 8b)

Crazy. I have my share of weeds, but no horsetail or nettles (knock on wood). I have bracken fern coming up everywhere, though.

My lawn/meadow is 6 inches high and full of bloomin' dandelions. And the edges . . . can't see 'em for the grass.

Mountlake Terrace, WA(Zone 8a)

Six inches high, and full of Dandelions? Are you complaining? Think about how happy the compost pile will be.

As to Horsetails, I was at Urban Weeds last weekend in Fremont, and they had Horsetails potted up in fancy pots for the Urban Gardener. Good grief.

Good night.

Woodinville, WA(Zone 8b)

No matter how hard I try to convince myself that I have a meadow and that a few dandelions don't hurt, I just wish they weren't there. Fortunately, I can get the grass compost pile warm enough to keep them from germinating. But it doesn't stop them anywhere else . . .

Horsetails for sale. Hah. That's how I feel about salmonberry for sale.

Port Angeles, WA(Zone 8b)

Question about that compost pile. I've been clearing the QAW of cleavers, thistle, nettle, and some other stuff. I'm sure there are seeds in the leaf duff, which is quite thick. Could I use that duff in a compost pile and will it get hot enough to "kill" the seeds in there? The stuff is so moldy and gooey now that it's a shame not to be able to use it. Don't want to burn it if I don't have to.

Port Orchard, WA(Zone 8a)

Mellissa, I'm not sure of the 1st pic, i've seen other streakers like it, Splashed Leather looks like that, when it first emerges. Sheri, I would use the duff. I have for many years. there's are some seeds in it. but I hoe any little weeds before they take hold. I do use compost or Tagro every year as a top dressing with it. in the lower garden. the combination makes great soil. Jim

Mirpur (A.K), Pakistan(Zone 9b)

Its great honour for me if I will have something like Dan Hinkley . He is famous in collecting, propagating, and naming varieties of plants . But great people have great names and I am a little plant lover who did little job with the help of DG friends.
So thank you so much for encourging me.

Woodinville, WA(Zone 8b)

Well, Kaleem, Dan Hinkley started small and it was his love of things that weren't supposed to grow in the Pacific Northwest U.S. that helped make him famous. He did it anyway, and finally many more people followed.

So you are doing that in the same way as Dan Hinkley.
