Walking on the Wild Side

Rhinebeck, NY(Zone 5b)

one more shot. If I don't pick 'em will more come next year?

Or how small your foot is! Yes, they can get pretty big.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

I don't think picking has much effect on the following year. The main plant is under the ground.

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

PICK 'EM and EAT 'EM.
Enjoy. they sell for $45.00 a pound at Wegmans.
I need help posting an email of images.
I tried to do it like a website link but only yhe script came through.
Can anyone help? or do I have to save and post all of the pictures.

Rhinebeck, NY(Zone 5b)

GE: are you talking about attaching pictures to your regular email or posting pictures on DG or posting an image on Dave's Email?

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

I was sent a forward. The file is images. I tried to copy and paste it into a DG thread (like a link) and all that comes is the text.
Must be the images are protected.

The camera caught this dude or dudette,

I found a hole in my soil yesterday - about 2 - 2 1/2 inches in diameter. Any guesses?

Mole or Vole. I can tell it was not no woodchuck or woodchick.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

I thought mole right away. Aren't voles smaller?

I don't know. I saw it on the news last week and they said they look the same except the vole is a total vegatarian. The meadow mole isn't that one blind and has pink eyes?

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

my guess is a chipmunk, if you have a stone wall anywhere, you'll get them.
Good luck - - - they're clever.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

I have plenty of chipmunks and their holes are much smaller.

Rhinebeck, NY(Zone 5b)

Schickenlady, that shot looks like my side yard any time of the day. It's a woodchuck playground. Grrr

NORTH CENTRAL, PA(Zone 5a)

Those worried about the woodchuck may wish to look into the smoke bomb as a management tool. You can use all known management techniques and still not have a ballanced situation. I live in surburban and edge farmland. The woodchuck does more damage than any other small animal in our area. When a horse of cow tramps in a hole and goes down more likely than not the horse or cow has to be put down. When a tractor drops one wheel in a hole it can be overturned. Those critters are very expensive to have around because of the problems they introduce. And yes we find that we have groundhog appreciation groups the same as most any wild animals somehow achieve a preservation based action group. I sure our Punxy Phil has quite a following.

Rhinebeck, NY(Zone 5b)

Doc, I've almost broken MY leg walking into one of those woody woodchuck holes.

Is a smoke bomb something you can buy? Where?

daisygrrl

Usually where there is one there is two. Like birds of a feather flock togather. I don't want to be mean but there is a limit to what you are willing to bear the brunt of damage.

Rhinebeck, NY(Zone 5b)

Look what we're having for dinner in Rhinebeck. I went back to the tree after today's rain, and there were more! And I saw where somebody...Mr. Woody Woodchuck or Ms. Bambi...had already chowed down on a couple, so I picked 'em.

And the morel of the story is to get there before the critters!

Southern Dutchess Co, NY(Zone 5b)

Victor, you are the bright side of every story!

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Thanks Lynn!^_^

I'm definitely going out on shroom patrol first thing tomorrow.

Medway, MA(Zone 5b)

Regarding the 'chucks and animal rights, etc., (forgive me if you're not religious) God gave man dominion over all the animals. And I intend to dominate all the 'chucks, 'coons, squirrels, rabbits, and deer on my property!

Medway, MA(Zone 5b)

Sorry, I was just being light-hearted about the annoying critters in my yard! Didn't intend to get things going.

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

It was too early in the AM for me,sorry if I prickled anyone.
You never know about us Capricorns.

So...... did anybody take a walk on the "wild side" today? Not me, but was wondering if anything new is in bloom. My crabapple is almost done blooming after looking especially spectacular this year. You could hear the bees in in from 6 feet away!

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

I took a walk on the wild side yesterday and was amazed at how many red Trillium I have growing in the woodline. I must have counted well over a 100 different clumps!!! I recently planted white Trillium in hopes to spread them like the red..wish me luck!!

Good Luck!

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

LOL Thanks Sherrie!!

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Very nice, Celeste. I have to try some trillium. I love spring wildflowers.

Appleton, WI(Zone 5a)

I believe there are some wild phlox. This isn't Dame's Rocket I don't think.

Nice Al. I don't think that's Dame's Rocket. I had it once.

Rhinebeck, NY(Zone 5b)

Walking in my MIL's place in Maine, I came across dozens and dozens of these in the woods!

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Aren't they great! We have them everywhere.....I am now trying to add the white ones to the mix!

Rhinebeck, NY(Zone 5b)

I hope I didn't do anything wrong, but I dug 3 up to try to get started in the woodland garden I'm starting here on our property. These were found on lands that have been in my husband's family since before the Civil War...and they ain't goin' anywhere. And there were acres of them!

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

Sometimes it's hard to establish wild ones once moved.

Ny is stricter on the laws of them. Do what you want but be hush hush.
