Walking on the Wild Side

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

'Kaleidoscope' is $22 at Deer Resistant Plants. Looks nice though. But they're ephemeral. Gone by the summer.

Rhinebeck, NY(Zone 5b)

Hemhostaholic: Thank you so much for the definitions, I always learn so much on these forums. What I have is definitely the Mayapple. I have 2 kinds: one that looks bright green the way yours does, and then another with a mottled green leaf. I'll post a pix of that one tomorrow.

Love seeing those Lady Slippers. Would love to see them when they're all grown up!

Rhinebeck, NY(Zone 5b)

Mamasita: I believe I saw your Spring Beauties out on a walk today...they are beautiful. Wanted to get a pix, but the day got away from me.

Ramps: Maybe I should pick mine and try to sell them. They are for sale at the organic store here for $14.00 a pound!!!

Southern Dutchess Co, NY(Zone 5b)

Anybody want ramps? I am loaded! We've been her for almost 25 years and they've never been harvested!

Kershaw, SC(Zone 8b)

Ok, I'm to lazy to go and look, but what in the heck are ramps?

I did not dare to ask what ramps were. What are they?

Southern Dutchess Co, NY(Zone 5b)

Ramps are a wild leek. They are only available in early spring. There are communities that have Ramp festivals. MaypopLaurel knows a good bit about them.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Do ramps grow on slopes?

Southern Dutchess Co, NY(Zone 5b)

Always the witty one, Victor! Actually, they grow in the woods and look like a scallion except they have two large, flat leaves.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

And you cut them at the base to use them?

Southern Dutchess Co, NY(Zone 5b)

I have never used them before and that's why I have so many! I believe you dig them up and use the white portion much as you would with a scallion or a leek. They're supposed to be quite pungent. My grandmother used to call them wild garlic because they are pretty close in flavor, I guess.

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

not to be confused with "scapes" the twisty tops of garlic befor it blooms.
Friend of mine grew garlic and had a party to harvest the scapes so the bulb at the bottom would get bigger.
We had trash bags full and one in the party took them to New York city and sold them for$250.per pound.

OMG OMG OMG My arms are flailing again walking around!!!! OMG OMG look at this Beauty!!! I got a flower yes I got a flower!!!!

You're so right - that IS a beauty! Lucky you!

There is quite a few of them growing. They are very dark maroon. What are they? OMG

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

Trillium OMG Its a wild flower here and the red ones are rare.
White ones cover the woodsfloor in mid May.
There are cultivated varieties out now.
Yours is a beaut.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Cool! Congrats!

S of Lake Ontario, NY(Zone 6a)

Very pretty Trillium, I saw some red ones in Butermilk over the w/e. I like the white ones best, remind me of my mom.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Sherrie, you must feel like a trillium bucks!

Southern Dutchess Co, NY(Zone 5b)

I walked back through the woods this evening and the frost got the tops of the ostrich ferns. Looks kind of strange with just the top 3 or 4 inches wilted and hanging over.

Rhinebeck, NY(Zone 5b)

Schickenlady: That is the most wonderful colored trillium I have ever seen! Is that growing naturally on your land or did you plant them?

Mamasita: too bad about the ostrich ferns. I love the looks of those.

Victor, et.al: Re: ramps. You pull them up and use them much like a scallion. They must be super chic in gourmet circles. A friend saw them for sale at Whole Foods for a bunch o money.

Southern Dutchess Co, NY(Zone 5b)

Fantastic! I'm sitting on a fortune! Who knew those ramps would pay for my kid's education?

Cleveland,GA/Atlanta, GA(Zone 7b)

Maybe plan on a state school Lynn? We've got two in college (one in grad school who works two jobs, the other is on the Geek Squad and goes to school part time). I'm driving the dented van in which they learned to drive and took their driving tests :). The northern private colleges can set you back a bit (like $50,000 a year). Even with scholarships, it's still pricey.

I can give expert advice here. Learn to cook lentils, rice, beans and pasta with those ramps!

Appleton, WI(Zone 5a)

By chance(or maybe not with not a lot of flowers in my garden yet) I have taken wildflower pics this week.

Here is the yellow one of these.

Nice shots Al. Is it finally spring there?!

Appleton, WI(Zone 5a)

It is - I'll have a few shots from my garden soon.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

When will you plant out the dahlias?

Appleton, WI(Zone 5a)

Maybe the 18th depending on the forecast then or the week after. Half of them still aren't up in their pots on the porch.

Southern Dutchess Co, NY(Zone 5b)

Al, picture #1 is a trout lily, #2 is a dog toothed violet (I think) and #7 is Spring Beauty (claytonia) as near as I can tell. Can't help with #4. Nice wildflower photos!

Appleton, WI(Zone 5a)

Ok - thanks Mama.
