LaMancha Milk Goats

Fritch, TX(Zone 6b)

oh, i had that one figured out when i went ot pick her up. she had gotten so frustrated with the goat that she crated her. and suggested we borrow the crate to transport her. NOPE. she just laid down in the back of the van, with her head in Sam's lap, and rode like a classy lady, so i knew she had it in her...

so we have been taking our time and taking it easy with her. she is still easily startled. but she is geting over her head shy-ness... and beginning to produce mor emilk...

Sounds like she had a rough introduction to milking.

i agree... we are replacing that with as many good experiences as possible, and that method seems to be workign wuite well!!!

Fritch, TX(Zone 6b)

i need to learn more about milk gaots. i will be getting Bradywine's twin ChloeGirl as soon as she freshens. she offered her to me beforehand, but i don't know the first thing abou tbirthing that kind of kid...

Columbia, TN(Zone 7b)

There's a first time for everything tf! A real good goat site is http://fiascofarm.com/ . It's one of the best for goat info and they cover kidding in detail.
Remember that our Milly is due September 13 so we're facing this here too.

Usually, 9 times out of 10 they are good at birthing, I know I read all the horror stories. I was mortified. Even very very young girls did good. Sometimes if there is like trips or quads you may need to help mama clean the babies. They get real tired. MAKE sure you have Nutri-drench, for them. mama and the babies. Iodine for the cord, old towels, and of course the camera. I always fed my new mamas free choice hay and made sure they had feed twice a day. Mine were meat goats tho.

Columbia, TN(Zone 7b)

L2G it depends on the breed. Some have more trouble than others. Boers are bred to have multiple births (up to 4) and can run into problems because of that. Things like kids turned sideways where you have to reach inside and turn them nose first. Also legs tucked under them instead of extended forward. Another problem with the multiple births is the mom laying down on a newborn when she's laboring with the next kid. Nothing like humans to make something natural more complicated!

Yes i do know what you mean, but of all the births we had we only had to help one, she was just so tired, all we did was clean up the last baby she had trips. I did have to rescue a baby tho the mama left it in the cold for dead. I know nothing of these type of goats that the thread is about now nubians, but i would think nature is just that. Dogs, cats, birds and goats, its a nature thing they know.

Sure hope Milly read the manual !!!!

Oh bless you, I am sure it will go fine,if she is healthy and taken good care of she will do fine. I have faith in ya, and you will be ready, one thing watch the moon at the time she is due. Mine always had theirs with in 2 days of a moon faze.

TF,

I have pics of mine giving birth; if you want, I can to send them to you so you know what everything looks like! I don't think everyone wants to see that! We've had to assist in births before(head turned sideways, leg bent back, ect).
Most times everything is fine but things do happen. Also make sure their nose and mouth are cleaned off so they can breath. We had a lamb one time that had too much mucous in it's airway and had to hold it by the back feet and gently swing it back and forth to get it out. Make sure you have a good grip, you don't want to fling the poor thing across the barn! I also make sure mom's teats aren't clogged and milk comes out easily.
I like to give mom some warm water with molasses after she gives birth; it's nice treat and energy boost for her.
Sorry to keep going on and on! I get sooo excited around birthing time!

Sue :-)

(Tia) Norman, OK(Zone 7a)

Yes warm water with molasses is a good idea. The Nutri drench says to give to the babies when they are 1 hr old. Will be waiting for the due date to see how it goes for you.

So glad I saw this thread this morning.. I have missed it all this time.
I am kind of hanging here too... my "sales women" has kind of left me high and dri.. you know goat is sold.. I am out here on my own.. sort of dangling.. hoping I am doing ok.

BUT... Someday.. I think I might be interested in a mixed LaMancha x Nubian.. not worried about meat.. but what a nice milker and milkfat mix.

I will be following you girls.. give clear and concise instructions girls. ;-)

We almost bought two Boer does earlier this summer but it was on a day my sensible side was in charge! Darnet! I REALLY miss the goats! I'm sitting here flipping through my photo album feeling very melancholy!
I suppose I should just go out in the garden and pick my veggies. It rained most of the weekend(4.1 inches!) So I've been neglecting it. Sigh.

(Tia) Norman, OK(Zone 7a)

wow we pick every day, I cut okra till my fingers were sore last night, I looked this morning and there is more. I want some goats, but just a couple. NO babies. Maybe in the spring. I do not want them for milk, just to forage. Maybe get a few to butcher. I can get them quartered for about 35 bucks.

Columbia, TN(Zone 7b)

L2G why don't you buy some wethers?

MollyD

(Tia) Norman, OK(Zone 7a)

That is what I am thinking about. They are so nice and gentle and DO NOT STINK. I will look this coming spring. Then let the free range and in the summer to the butcher.

TamaraFaye,

Well here I am being envious. How do you find a free goat? My wife wants to make goat cheese. We're huge fans of Greek food. Best wishes.

How about Loganberrywine?

Fritch, TX(Zone 6b)

LOL, is it an heifloom plant? do i call her logan?

Fritch, TX(Zone 6b)

or berry?

Columbia, TN(Zone 7b)

Loganberry wine is an old fashion beverage people use to make for their own use. I guess you could call her Logan (or Berry) for short LOL

Whiney?

Columbia, TN(Zone 7b)

LOL we cross posted on the name Berry!

Fritch, TX(Zone 6b)

can i say be nice again catscan?!

old fashioned is good. i am a real lover of heirloom plants and seeds, esp grains and tomatoes. just have too much on my mind to think about it.

she is very good natured. i trimmed her long hair on her backside after milking this morning. she needs her dew claws trimmed next. i like the way her horns are curving around her face.

having four goats will be nice, think i will just breed one nubian and one la mancha back. then i will have three milking and one not. then breed the other two. i have met so many wonderful goat people.

Goat people are nice aren't they! We've met quite a few since we started keeping goats and 99% have been super nice people.

I'm a terrible speller......;0)

Quince is a nice old fashioned fruit--but not a berry. Same with Medlar. Bramble? Jewel, Heritage, Darrow, Ruby, Autumn Bliss, Amity, Anne, Caroline and Dinkum (Australian)? Those are all the raspberries I know. Some are as old as Brandywine.

From my recall ... I seem to have put to memory that the fruit QUINCE is reputed to be the original forbidden fruit that was eaten by Adam in the Garden of Eden ... since this is DG forum ... I thought someone might appreciate tiny bit of biblical history added to the thread. I'm no biblical scholar ... just seem to have read or heard this to be factual. Anyone hear tell it was an apple? ... I know everyone's heard that but of course... its a big fat lie LOL .... as if I care one way or the other.
