Do You See What I See?

Kennebunk, ME(Zone 5a)

I started these on 4/6.
They are Bristol's Party Boy X Spacedust :)
These are the seed that I scattered in the garden and was wondering, for those that started them, how all of yours are doing :)

Just so everyone knows, usually a fantasy X fantasy = solid so these may turn out to be nothing too special BUT there are always exceptions to the rules :)

I'm hoping to make alot of crosses this summer so that by fall we will all have new seeds to start over the winter time :)

Can't wait to see baby pictures :)

Now, for comparison.....

These are Bristol's Party Boy X Self that I started on 2-7
I started these because I wasn't having very good luck with seed and wanted to keep practicing so that I would be able to grow them. I'm wicked afraid to play with them too too much just yet so they are really saving rental space *lol*

This was the same flat on 4/7, so as you can see, they are still growing *lol*

Last night I made a cross that I am SOOOOO hoping takes. Sometimes they take and others they don't. I guess it depends on the boyfriend I'm trying to use *lol*

This is the cross I made last night:

Fire & Ice (this is the momma)

Thumbnail by kimskreations
Kennebunk, ME(Zone 5a)

And this is the daddy

Salmon Sunset

Can you imagine what the babies will look like IF this is a successful match?

Thumbnail by kimskreations

Oh Kim! I am so excited for you! Don't you just love to see the little green faces pop up? I get such a thrill every time a seed germinates! The possibilities are endless when it's a hybrid seed! ^_^

Your babies are growing great! You're really doing something right!

I sure hope that cross takes. It will be exciting to see what you get out of those. I've got some Cherry Pie x self and Inky Fingers x self seedlings that are forming their first buds. I know I should pinch them, but I just can't. I have to see what they're going to look like! LOL

Congratulations on your successes, Kim! ^_^

Kennebunk, ME(Zone 5a)

My next star struck luvers are going to be:

Salmon Sunset (as the mommy this time of course because I used his pollen on Fire and Ice last night *lol*)

With Dibley's Gwen as the daddy :)

Whatcha think those will look like?

I'm hoping for lots of flowers like Gwen using that as the daddy and Salmon w//purple markings for flowers using Salmon Sunset as mom.

So much fun :)

Why thank you SO MUCH Amy :)
I CAN'T WAIT to see what your babies look like!
I won't be able to pinch my first ones either....NO WAY~
I haven't been really successful with crosses but I found out I was trying waaay too early so now I think I might have a better handle on the timing *fingers crossed*

It has been quite fun growing from seed this time as I have always lost everything I tried from seed. I just lose patience so this is why I keep trying over and over again. I hate to think of all the seeds I have lost.....ewwwww

Progress.......If at first you don't succeed....try, try, try, try, keep trying, keep trying........and you will :) *lol*

Hi Kim;
You know if you pick those little plantlets up & then put them back down anywhere in the soil, they will grow much faster, i do all my seed this way. give it a try.
mrsbonnie

Kennebunk, ME(Zone 5a)

I will try that Bonnie. I kind of knew I should do it but have been afraid to *lol* I did pick a few out though and put them in the cups. I think I need to actually separate those into individual cups but I don't want to use all my space and cups *lol* I figured I'd just let the strongest survive *lol*

Hey, AV folks...long time no see!
After 'chatting' with Kim about a certain strep...I had to check out this thread!

Did you folks pollinate your own flowers so your plants would set seed?
If so....WOW!

Otherwise, where do you *find* streptocarpus seeds?
I've got to try this!

TIA

Kennebunk, ME(Zone 5a)

Hey Nan! So NICE to see you here :)
I have some extra seeds of Bristol's Party Box X Self if you'd like to try some of those :)
Yes, some of us pollinate and hybridize and you can also obtain seeds from the Gesneriad Society which many of us belong to.
If you just want to play with some Strep seeds though, I would be happy to share some of mine with you as I've had great germination so far (too much *lol*). Just let me know.
You can see some of the seedlings I have growing on the "Do you see what I see" thread that I started today :)

SO glad you stopped in :)

Kim

SW, WI(Zone 4b)

Wow, I'm impressed!

lol! You have had success, Kim! Good growing!
I would love to try a few, but I'd never be able to grow 'on' the number that you have, there. (Ü) whew!

Maybe when we do I trade in the summer/fall.....you could include those seeds *if* I can find you something else in trade.
You think about what else you might like me to send you, and I'll keep my eyes and ears open for something you might like....OK?

In the meantime, I'm excited to watch your seedlings progress....keep updating, please!

Thanks for offering the seeds, btw.

Kennebunk, ME(Zone 5a)

Oh Nan, it's my pleasure :)
Gessie seeds are like dust (literally) and you really never know how many you've sown.
Then all of sudden babies are popping up everywhere :)
Don't you worry Nan, it's all good :)

I will send you some when I send your box or I would be happy to send you the seeds right now if you'd like so that you can start them. It's only the price of a notecard *lol* Are you ready to start some now? Just let me know and they're in the mail to you :)

Kim

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

Nan..........I saw that amazing nematanthus!

Kim, you are doing much better than I am this go around with strep seeds!!! My Party Boy times himself are slowly growing and I need to find your cross.............seeds........don't get mad........I forgot you sent them to me but I am sure I didn't throw them away...........

Nan, I don't know how to hybridize like they do but I have a lot of strep pods full of seed..........let me show you a quick picture.........you will get all shades of color when they just cross on their own............One is a deep deep red and the other one without flowers and lots of pods that aren't ready yet is a gorgeous variegated strep and they grow wonderful seedlings.

The ones on the red are ready to be taken off...........just say if you want them.........

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

There are no flowers on this variegated one but check out the size of the seed pods.

Kim!! ARen't you proud of yourself...........fantastic and I am so excited for you!

Bonnie, I ended up taking each of the seedlings out of the flat and replanting them today. Now they are a mess though because I got dirt all over their leaves *lol* Once the dry off a little I wish brush the dirt away and soon they will be ready for their next photo shoot in a few weeks *lol*

Kim

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

I am brain dead tonight and I can't remember which thread I said I would post my first baby of Dracula's Shadow and her first bloom.
Here she is ........only she is bigger than you think and prettier than this pic!

Thumbnail by gessiegail
Kennebunk, ME(Zone 5a)

Very pretty Gail!
Is she a purple or a red?

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

She is definitely a purple ..........very dark and vivid color............I should have taken her out of the gro lights for a pic..................no red at all

Mid, ID(Zone 3b)

What a great thread with all those babies you have growing Kim! Next weekend I'll be getting the lights for my second stand and then I'm going to start the seeds you sent me, I sure hope they do as well as yours have done!

Ok, you've got to tell me how you do this pollinating thing yourself. I've gotten a couple of seeds pods by sheer coincidence up to this point. Now if I want to make it happen how do I go about it?? I need a lesson in the birds and the bees here! LOL

Maybe you could take some pictures for me, step by step, that would be awesome!
~Brenda

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

Brenda, the best way to learn is that I called Kim and she gave me instructions step by step over the phone............they were good instructions but my hands are too shaky to do this..........I gave up but her instructions were just perfect.........we each had two plants and she walked me through it. Most people (not Kim) use a little paint brush (use on of your small makeup brushes)..................

(Zone 1)

Oh my ... I keep forgetting to check the AV forum for "NEW" threads!

Kim: How amazing! I am so in awe of anyone who has the patience to pollinate and hybridize like that!

I have still not taken the time to sow my seeds. Do you think they are still viable? I am going to do it tomorrow, so we'll see what happens. I could kick myself for not doing it sooner.

I can't wait to see the results of y'alls crosses ... c'mon plants ... BLOOM!

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

Lin, I can't even find my seeds from the cross from Kim!!!!!!! Gotta start looking for them or she won't let me grow her crosses (LOL)

I think strep seeds stay viable pretty long............

Kennebunk, ME(Zone 5a)

LOL you ladies are just a hoot!

Yes Lin, your seeds should still be viable. But if you are going to store seeds, you are better to store them in the refrigerator.

Brenda, here is a GREAT picture site showing how to cross pollinate. The ONLY step Dale Martens suggested skipping is bagging it once it's pollinated. You DON'T have to bag it but putting it under a dome is good. You get better luck if the humidity is higher. Dale also suggests that you pollinate old lady/young man. Meaning, the flower should be 5 to 7 days old and the pollen should be from a newly opened flower. http://www.streptocarpus-info.com/crosspollinating.html

Gail, even if you throw them out every time I send them, you are ALWAYS welcome to my seeds :)

BUT if anyone gets a real knockout, drop dead, just gotta name plant *lol* I would love a leaf *lol*

I just have fun doing it and imagining what the babies will look like. I can't wait to try pollinating chirita's and being able to share those seeds. EVENTUALLY.........SOMEDAY I might even try AV's but that is going to be WAAAAY down the road *lol*

XO
Kim

Brenda, that's a fabulous site that Kim linked you to about pollinating Streps. It's super simple to do!

I've not taken the time to pollinate like I should and want to. I've got a few blooms going, so maybe I'll just pollinate some today. Wouldn't be awesome if one of us ended up getting a seedling that was so fabulous it could be registered?? I'd love to register one some day, just for the sake of the accomplishment, but not just any ole' thing that blooms, a really spectacular one! LOL

I was looking through Strep pictures yesterday and came across a picture of a named and/or registered one that looks very much like a seedling that grew from some seeds that were sent to me, except that I think the flower form on the one I have is better than the named one. I should have suggested that the person who sent me the seeds register it. It's the only unnamed Strep I've kept, because I love it so.

Mid, ID(Zone 3b)

Well after going through that page of directions I have definitely had a lesson in the birds and the bees, plant style this morning. ^_^

That really is an excellent demonstration and just what I needed with the picture by picture steps, thanks Kim! And to think you do this with daylilys and what ever else you can get your hands on! You have a great imagination for seeing the results you'd like to end up with.

So far the pods I have ended up with have been totally up to nature so who knows what I've got. Although the Daisy Jane seed pods came from a window sill in my kitchen where the only two plants in the whole room were she and Mei Lei.

Lots of flowers for me right now so todays the day to give it a try. Your right Amy, it would be something to see "Raingazer's" named streps out there. ^_^
~Brenda

Kennebunk, ME(Zone 5a)

Brenda, if you get a pod on a plant that you didn't hand pollinate, it probably selfed itself so seeds from that pod would be named "Strep Name here" X Self

Hope that helps. Good luck with your pollinating!! Be SURE to mark your pods with Mothers name X Fathers name and the date you crossed it. That is a pain in the butt but saves you alot of guesswork :) I use labels cut in TINY strips and gently tape them to the stem.

OOOOH how exciting...........another hybridizer :)

Good Luck!

Kim

Mid, ID(Zone 3b)

Kim thanks for all your help! I'm thinking of using my Maassens White as one of the parents both ways because it has been my faithful never fail me reproducer leaf wise and is a strong not overly hybridized plant. Then I'm going to add in Tractor Beam I think for this first go round. That dark purple netting mixed with the white with the yellow throat, hmm, I'm trying to see it in YOUR minds eye, your good at this!

So how many of "Kimbers" Dalylilies are actually out there now?? ^_^

~Brenda

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

I hope dementia isn't setting in early! I posted the Dracula's Shadow on the wrong thread. Here she is in natural light.

Brenda, I hope you meet success hybridizing and I think it sounds like so much fun!

Thumbnail by gessiegail
Mid, ID(Zone 3b)

Gail that Dracula's Shadow is so gorgeous, looks like purple velvet!

I've been checking over my plants to see who is in the "mood" ^_^ and now I'm back here to check out the link again before getting my scissors out!

~Brenda

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

Brenda, I want to trade leaves with you!!!!!! I really do have a lot of them...................ones I don't think you have............but I can't do it until the Mother's Day Sale on the 10th of May.

Don't ask me why I went to Victoria yesterday and bought 27 new african violets, columnea and a big tray of episcias............that will keep me busy this week plus I have so many baby streps that need to be planted up.

Will you not cut everything right now!!!!!!!!!!!!! (LOL)
I love 'getting the scissors out'!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

Brenda, I have an idea..............I can send yours now and that would be better for me as I am going to sell so many at the sale and I can take leaves now from them and the others..........................may I send yours and then you don't send mine until the last half of May????????????? Pretty please.

Here is a picture of Silverglade Oyster ........all three plants I grew from your leaves but they won't bloom.

Thumbnail by gessiegail
Mid, ID(Zone 3b)

Sounds great Gail! My scissors will avoid any leaves for now. ^_^

Wow, Silverglades is a whopper and still now blooms, how strange!
