Gardenia Growing Fools - THE Tahitians...

(Cathy), MO

I hope everyone else is having better luck than me! Mine have never sprouted. Need that heat mat Chantell! Then I can try some more!

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

I know Cat...sorry about that...I've just got too much on my plate personally right now to undertake the heat mat thing. If someone else would like to - please do. I never heard back from Parks either.... :(

(Cathy), MO

Not a problem Chantell, just giving you a hard time! :-) Did yours sprout? Wonder what I did wrong

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

I know Cat...I just feel badly that I couldn't move ahead with the heat mats at this point. They probably just really need some good heat...that would be my best guess. In VA we've had an unusually cool spring...not complaining mind you....but it's not great for seed germination, I would think. I'm trying to put mine where they'll get the most warmth...

(Cathy), MO

Hey we aren't Super women! (much as we seem to THINK we are sometimes! LOL). Maybe someone else will come up with a good vendor & run with it. If not, we can wait until later!

I'm thinking I may try putting a few seeds in another pot and enclose the whole thing in plastic for several weeks. Anyone tried that yet???

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

critter had great ideas w/milk jugs (for winter sowing - but would work as mini greenhouses just the same). Cut them 2/3's the way up almost all the way around (I like the 1/2 gal size). Poke holes in top (for ventilation) and the bottom (for drainage)...couple of holes above and below the cut mark - thread a twist tie through these to keep top and bottom shut. Leave lid off top also for ventilation. Stick in sunny window.

I have windows but can't say they've been very sunny lately ! LOL
Now we're getting some - May move my pot to sunny jug

Bartlesville, OK(Zone 6a)

I am using the strawberry cartons that have the vents and the lids that lock but lets in light. I am keeping them on the top shelf of the plant stand under lights and it should be warm enough. Starting to worry though cause I used all 10 and should have saved some to try again. Oh well..

I used all 20 of mine- keeping the faith tho! now are being warmed by a smal lamp

Ok guys, any interest in the heat mats below? I am talking to Roger to see what kind of price we could get.

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

That would be my size ^_^ although I hope we all have sprouts from our tiare s before these mats could get here. I
m keeping the light on...

Sinking spring, PA(Zone 5b)

I don't know how relevant this is, and I didn't keep track of the time exactly, but I remember my Vietnamese gardenia seeds took a long time to come up. I planted my seeds April 26th, and it's been in the high eigthies and low nineties ever since. Maybe soon!

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

Ahhh Cat - you are so sweet!!! See what price he'll give you on those for sure. Sadly, never did hear back from Parks http://www.parkseed.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/StoreCatalogDisplay?storeId=10101&catalogId=10101&langId=-1&SearchText=Heat+Mats&mainPage=textsearchresults&RequestType=NewRequest&go.x=0&go.y=0&go=submit
Probably shouldv'e followed up with a call...but well, you know.

Three Cheers for CAT!!!!!

Navarre, FL(Zone 8b)

I have 4 more sprouts!!!! I got home from work and my small lean to greenhouse was at 90 degrees around 4:00. The humidity showed close to 70%. They are slow, but they are coming along. Yeah!!!

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

I'm SOOOO jealous but very pleased that you're getting babies...now if OUR temps would just creep up a little for me....

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

theres HOPE- the only green I have proved to be algae on close inspection

Bessemer, AL(Zone 8b)

mine still hasn't did nything

Bartlesville, OK(Zone 6a)

me either

Sinking spring, PA(Zone 5b)

We finally got some rain down here yesterday. Sometimes for me a good rain kick starts tough seedlings.

PamelaQ- did you soak your seeds? I am wondering if my choice to soak them was ill-advised.

Bessemer, AL(Zone 8b)

faunaa, i did not soak mine. maybe i should have?

Navarre, FL(Zone 8b)

No, I did not soak them, but I do keep them constantly moist from watering.

Sinking spring, PA(Zone 5b)

I soaked mine. I do most of my seeds. I am wondering if I should not have. Anything in the legume family, palm seeds, anything with tough seedcoats- those are seeds I definitely always soak. Most of the time it works out well for me.

Navarre, FL(Zone 8b)

I really think the temperature has a lot to do with it. The hotter the greenhouse gets, the more seeds have sprouted. I now have about 9 more sprouted and everthing was the same except it got hotter.
Pam

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

That was what I was hoping, Pam - our temps have been more the "norm" for this time of year - last few days...

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

will go with heat, now we have some.
,meanwhile, have 3 of 5 Jobs Tears up. in very wet soil and outside with some sun.

Sinking spring, PA(Zone 5b)

I noticed 2 sprouts yesteday! Maybe there will be a few more when I get home today. Hang in there folks, those tropical seeds sometimes like to take their time.

Navarre, FL(Zone 8b)

Yeah!!! They are all going to be sprouting soon. Yeah!!!!!

Chichester, NH(Zone 5b)

My fingers are still crossed...I planted mine 5/2 so by f4f records, hopefully another week or two and I should see little shoots....hopefully. I really want them to sprout since I had 2 sprout out of my last lot but lost them due to my negligence and letting them dry out.

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

Oh THIS is good news....glad to hear it.!!!

Bessemer, AL(Zone 8b)

nothing yet

Bartlesville, OK(Zone 6a)

GUESS WHAT???!!!

I have 3 little tiny sprouts so far. I am sooooo excited. Now to keep them alive and growing.

Susan
=^..^=

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

yeah Susan!!!!

Bessemer, AL(Zone 8b)

still nothing here

Chichester, NH(Zone 5b)

yipeee i got a little green shoot coming up....finally.

North of Atlanta, GA(Zone 8a)

nothing for me. I've had mine in baggie for a week now. Do you keep yours in coffee filter until sprout or do you plant them in dirt, astcgirl and 9kitty?

Bartlesville, OK(Zone 6a)

I put mine in seed starting mix in a strawberry clear plastic dish with a lid. This was a loooong time ago, so I had just about given up.

Chichester, NH(Zone 5b)

LiliMerci, mine took just over a month to germinate, so it may take a while. I just used those common peat pellets this time round. I'll keep my fingers crossed for you.

Here's my one and only baby so far.
