The "Jungle" is now in session

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

A busy season already, re-landscaping and spring cleaning. A mild winter (defined as above freezing) really has the garden seemingly ahead of schedule, whatever that might be!

A few projects included re-landscaping the back part of the garden formerly known as "the brug forrest",
cleaning out the garage and turning it into a "Tiki Lounge" set up with tables and chairs, ratan palm tree lamps, and still managing to function as a garage hiding the lawnmowers behind Thai print material hung from the ceiling.

This was the old landscaping-

fini!

Speaking of vines, this year is shaping up to be "the year of the vines" here!.

Pandora vine- first blooms, never had this vine before. Love it...it's hard to see as it is way up in the tree. The center is a dark pinkish purple and pink on the outer edges

And...I almost missed this, I was loading up the SUV to go to DFW last weekend, and noticed that the chalice vine had a bloom. First ever for me there too

My friend Gail slipped this Hibiscus to me...I had asked for a yellow one picture in the above photo, and this was a surprise bonus! I have no idea what the name is

"And this Hibiscus came home in my suitcase 3 years ago from the ABC shop- a 1.5 inch cutting..it's now ..well very tall!

I was thinking today on my way to the airport how much the climate and plants remind me of Sydney Australia. The tollway is lined with Eucalyptus trees, and this beauty is also from "Down Under", very drought tolerant Hibiscus.

Speaking of Australia-
Weeping Bottlebrush....sadly this is not in my garden yet. This is in a friends garden.

I never get tired of Daturas...they can have as many seeds as they want, but if they look like this, there's always a place in my garden.
This particular variety is called a Datura tree, and grows about 12 feet tall if you let it. It becomes very spindly though.

another Hibiscus...a mallow I think. This is actually related to the Okra

Papaya anyone?
They should be getting ripe next month. I noticed today (not picture) one is starting to rippen.

I won the lottery with this species. I bought the original papay 4 years ago now- after extensive research it turns out to be a hybrid that was specifically designed for every tree to produce fruit. Indeed, every tree does. The year after Hurricane Rita, I had so many Papayas in the front and back garden from all of the trees, that I let the fruit drop to the ground. As a result, there are wild Papaya trees growing in the front and back that came from the dropped papayas.
