Frog Island,
Ribbits gonna Rip Ya.... ERK ERK EKR!!!!! LOL
What lives in or near your Pond
He does look a bit menacing hiding in the reeds. I'll be looking over my shoulder from now on. LOL
LOL!
Love the bird shot!!
Great photos, everyone!
My water lily is white with a yellow center... most of my leaves are shredded from a hail storm 2 weeks ago... there are some new leaves. I have lights in the pond and at night the shredded ones really show up all ragged. I will try to get a picture of it tomorrow if it is not raining.. personally, I really hope it rains but it looks like it is going just east of us.... again. that hail storm only produce 1/4 inch of rain at my house.. we NEED rain!
Tammie
That Chickadee is a clean birdie now. I have had robins and blackbird take baths in my shallow end what a splash they make!!
Tammy, Can't wait to see your Waterlily, hope you get some gentle rain soon.
Chris
Yea.. I got just a little over 1/4 inch of rain this morning at 7am... a little bit of hail too but it was small.. did not damage my plants. Here is a picture of my first waterlily this year. You can see a little of the remaining damage on a few leaves from the hail 2 weeks ago.

T. That is pretty. Thanks for sharing.
How beautiful, LL. It's so dainty. Congrats!
lol he really looks like hes playing!
Beautiful water lily shot LhasaLover.
Ladygardener, Love the "Frog Island"
Behive, That Peek a boo frog looks a lot like mine.
Sunnyg, Love those bird shots, LOL over the frog wars.
Crimsontsavo, I'm always out in the beds near the pond and that is were all my bird feeders are so I think they are getting use to my walking back and forth all the time. I had one last year that was so shy that as soon as it heard you open the door it was gone. I have no idea of the sex life or frogs but when I look at that picture of the three smaller frogs on one side and the bigger one all alone I keep thinking Frog Harem. LOL
Of course it could be the other way around and the biggest one is the female, and those are all the suitors lined up waiting for her to make a choice. LOL
we have no frogs or crickets for that matter. I sit outside at night and it is completely silent unless there is a breeze in the trees or a bird chirps. Amazing! I sure do miss the frogs we used to have over at my mothers. Even the tourtises are missing so far this year!
Tammie
I don't want to distract us from our wildlife pictures. But we were doing something today and thought you might find these pictures interesting. I told you about the sinkhole that developed right where the pond would go. Well Ric needed to drain a good bit of water from the pool today and has been dying to try this. We know that because of the sinkhole we will not have to do near as much digging as we would have but Ric wanted to fill it up and see where the contours really are especially out where it gets more shallow. We had a huge piece of white plastic so we laid it and a piece of black rubber out on the lawn and started to syphon the water into it. This will give you a good idea where the pond will go and a good picture of the sinkhole I was describing earlier.
The pond will be bordered by the Juniper hedge, driveway and patio on three sides. There will be a waterfall of some kind coming down from the area between the Juniper and the birdbath pond. There is a large piece of driftwood sitting right about the spot where it will go. The Juniper will probably get cut back a couple of feet (only on the end where the waterfall goes in) and then left to grow back. Here is a view from one of our sitting areas, a canvas covered gazebo.
Here is one more view a little farther out. The part of the house with the lower roof line is the addition with the wrap around deck I mentioned. Easy to see why that needed to be finished before the pond could be put in. You can see some of the boulders we got from the neighbors that will be used for the pond and right here in front is my young Holly hedge only planted 1 1/2 years ago and that big dug up spot my Canna bed. Once the pond is put in I can really concentrate on developing this area into a nice garden area.
Wow, you weren’t kidding about that sinkhole! I couldn’t quite visualize the whole setup and was quite curious, so thanks for posting the pics. Your pond is going to look awesome!
HollyAnn that will be a great pond! I love mine bordering my patio, I sit out there to drink ice tea and read but don't get much reading done, I end up watching the frogs wait for their next insect snack and the dragonflies and birds visiting the pond. My fish even comes over to see if I have food for them. You will have to start a progress thread once digging begins.
Oh Ladygardener I will, you know how I document all the projects around here. I'm still hoping for a July start date. I'm afraid my frogs might have moved on to a larger water source. I didn't see them at all Monday or Tuesday. Monday was cold and rainy so I didn't think much about it but Tuesday was just beautiful sunny and warm. I'll be watching for them and let you know.
Oh, I know about frogs moving on. I had a really big guy, I called him the "Big Kahuna", he was just getting to the age where he could keep up the whole neighborhood with his call. We had a rain and he moved out, probably girl chasing. Seems the frogs come and go. Now I have 7 again, one year I was down to 3, Larry, Moe & Curly. LOL
Sorry no pictures but wanted to let you know that yesterday I saw 3 of my frogs. So they were either just being shy or found out that the greener pastures (or water) wasn't quite so green and came back.
Also I saw my very first Hummer for the year and it was over at the pond flying through the little fountain . I knew that hummers did that but although I see them at my feeders I have never seen one over at the fountain. So that makes 2 firsts for this season and we are just getting started.
Woohoo! Good for you Holly.
bedouin - they are attracted to red. Hang a nectar feeder or plant flowers that are bright and trumpet shaped. Others may have better ideas...
That is some beaver! Wow.. can't believe you never see it.
crimsontsavo.... that picture gave me chills! LOL
I saw two doves getting a drink of water out of my pond yesterday... yea.. something has found my pond. ... oh, and a bee today.
Crimsontsavo, WOW that's some picture. The circle of life, what eats the snakes?
Claire, That is some serious damage. Looks like Beaver to me, too. We don't have them here but my son has a summer place down at the river a few miles away and he has lost several trees along his bank to them. He wasn't too happy about it either.
Bedouin, He was hovering over the top of the birdbath part of my pond. The water is pumped up to the top and it is more of a bubbler than a spray. He was flying over where it bubbles up hitting the water. You could see it spray out every time he went through.
There are a lot of plants that Hummers really like. I put out a feeder and have plants that they like. They just loved my Cannas and I also have a Trumpet vine that they really love. You have to watch Trumpet vines they can be pretty invasive especially in your area. Hang a basket of red petunias or fuchsia. You might like this thread, it has some great ideas how to quick start a Hummer garden and lots of plant suggestions. http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/814151/
Love your birdbath Holly Ann - that's great! I should try to get a bubbler.
The beavers just girdle those big trees and then they die. It's really sad. The thing is, if I put wire around the tree that they are working on, they'll just move on to the next tree. I can't possibly put wire around all of them, so I just accept that I'll lose some beautiful trees with their activity. Doesn't make me happy about it though! Even if they fell a tree that size, they can't carry it off. They may take some branches. Their lodge is elsewhere. It's like they are transients at my pond - I don't know how often they are there. I think their lodge is on a river about a mile away, and they come up through the stream from time to time to sharpen their teeth on my trees!
Claire
Claire,
I've problem with beaver damage here too living by a lake. They surprised me last winter by chomping down my prized rose. And the rose cane was loaded with thorns, but no matter, beaver chomped them down as if it was someone has taken a saw to the shrub. They have taken willows and other ornamental trees in the garden as well. We do have a big dog -- my Jelly Bean does intimidate those beavers. Hopefully they're smart enough to know, if JB ever get a hold of them, they'll be beavers no more.
Jocie, your picture of 'life cycle' is fascinating. It's amazing to witness such happening. I've seen a snake that swallowed another (snake) of its same size. How do they digest all that?
Hollyanns, your first picture sure did grab my attention. lol. Everyone eles' pics. were great also. I'm really enjoying following your thread.
Kim
Thanks for the site hollyAnnS. I have a butterfly/hummingbird garden in the front yard but other than Salvias in the back, I've not planted for hummers. Seeing your pic of the bubbler, I'm trying to figure out how I can connect the water dripper to another underground motor to make it gush rather than drip. At present the dripper is connected directly to a tap. The electric line of the smaller pumps are rather short and my electric connection for the fountain is a fair distance. Mmmm, somehow I'll make it work!
Nanegoat66 thanks for the info re hummingbird plants.
Very pretty shots of your pond we have that type of spray in the box pond.We use to have alot of fun with it, It's fun watching it dance in the wind and we would set candles under it at night and get pretty reflections sometimes when we had a enclosed sheet spray Ric would blow smoke inside of it. Just silly stuff. The box pond isn't set up right now we needed to do a few things to it and move it so we can work on the patio. I expect to get it back up in a couple of weeks. Can't find the old picture but this link will take you to a picture I posted a year or so ago.

Also here is the other old picture I was looking for and couldn't find. It's the fawn drinking from my pond.

Frogs eat the bugs, snakes eat the frogs and Hillis (DH) kills the snakes, lol.
I try and save the snakes but hillis is unrelenting. :-(
