Claire, That is some serious damage. Looks like Beaver to me, too. We don't have them here but my son has a summer place down at the river a few miles away and he has lost several trees along his bank to them. He wasn't too happy about it either.
Bedouin, He was hovering over the top of the birdbath part of my pond. The water is pumped up to the top and it is more of a bubbler than a spray. He was flying over where it bubbles up hitting the water. You could see it spray out every time he went through.
There are a lot of plants that Hummers really like. I put out a feeder and have plants that they like. They just loved my Cannas and I also have a Trumpet vine that they really love. You have to watch Trumpet vines they can be pretty invasive especially in your area. Hang a basket of red petunias or fuchsia.
