An 'Awesome' little discovery

Southern, WI(Zone 5a)

While out this afternoon, peeking around to see who is up and who isn't, I spied something I wasn't quite prepared for, what look like little seedlings from Buggy Crazy's 'Awesome' coming up.

Last year was the first year I tried to save seeds. I did no pollinating, just open pollination. I collected the seed pods as they ripened, I didn't think I lost any. Other blooming lilies in the area were trimmed first after flowering (to give the energy back to the bulb, not to the seed pods), then after frost.

The seeds I threw into a baggy and many of them sprouted and are growing fine in my basement, soon to be phased outdoors. I was surprised anything came of those seeds inside....but outside??

I have purposefully tried to sow directly outside, with ultimate failure.

They sure look like lily seedlings sprouting. I'm awestruck really. That's pretty good germination for not trying. Weird. This never happens. Kind of exciting....

At first I thought they were chives or something, but no indeed. I pulled one off and there was no smell, and in comparing, the shape of the growth was different too. I'm not sure if chives throw up the little flag, like lily seeds do.

That IS awesome!

Better than the ones I grow this winter(-:

Why is it that you can try to grow these things and fail, then when you don't try, it works.

I've taken the Lily Garden's seeds (my first ever attempt at lilies from seed), I sowed them outdoors as recommended, when recommended and nothing.

Then, enlightened on DG, I got some and grew them inside, with some success. It's great fun!

Simply amazed still at my little discovery. Still can't believe it. Maybe they liked all that 100 + inches of snow this winter ^_^

Then I wonder if my lilium candidum possible seeded. I think I never really do too much with them and I do remember it making seed that I didn't really get to doing anything with. It has to be one of the two.

Those sure look like Lilium flag seeds to me. I can't attest to all Allium seeds, but I have seen seed of about 10 different flowering ornamental species. All of those Allium seed are round and pretty much black.

The flag definitely sets it apart from a lot of other options. It just seems strange that it would seed so easily. I guess I can only wait and see, right. Leave it as is and watch.

Allium seeds are pretty much black, from what I have seen too.

Edited to correct my grammar

How cool Tracey! I've never seen them do that before either. Definitely look like lily seedlings :-)
