Pirl is a Genius

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

You think they'll melt??!

Southern Dutchess Co, NY(Zone 5b)

Maybe the grease pencils will work better with the houseplants? Hey, I'll try them since the indelible markers were such a grand failure.

Slugs are disgusting. Period.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Maybe the grease pens can write on the dead slugs - number 1, 2....keep score!

Southern Dutchess Co, NY(Zone 5b)

I love it!

Tonight I moved some small potted pines out from under the eaves to get the rain and when i picked one up, I squished a slug under my thumb. Ick, ugh, gak, retch... I scrubbed the goo off my hand for 5 minutes because it just wouldn't come off! I need to make some tiny cemetery markers tonight .

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

I used to throw them (and grubs and dead insects) to my koi.

Nothing appealing about slugs not even the baby ones. They're even harder to grip with the scissors.

I once had a bowl of dog food outside and brought the bowl in to wash it and couldn't get whatever was stuck to the bottom off the bowl. Yucky! Icky! A huge slug. I've never forgotten it and never put a food bowl outside again.

Southern Dutchess Co, NY(Zone 5b)

I'm with you, pirl. GAK!!!

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

They should use them to make super glue. Or denture adhesive?

Southern Dutchess Co, NY(Zone 5b)

Maybe superglue, but the thought of anything coming from a slug being put into one's mouth - well, I don't know about that! I think I'd stick to DentuCream.

Questa, NM(Zone 5b)

"Gak" is right! I read in my "50 Ways To Kill A Slug" book, that white vinegar cleans up slug goo pretty good.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

'stick to DentuCream' - very good, Lynn!

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

That's a step too far for me, Harper. It's one thing to dispose of them but then I'm supposed to clean up their slime trails? No thank you. I'll just use that scissors to cover up the slime.

Questa, NM(Zone 5b)

No, silly! I meant to get their gooey crud off your hands. I haven't tried the vinegar yet, but I remember last year even sandpaper didn't get the darn sticky stuff off.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

To remove the slime from the slug, find a grub and rub.

S of Lake Ontario, NY(Zone 6a)

eewww!

(Zone 7b)

eeew is right - do you guys get those monstrous banana slugs we get up here?

I've tried the grease pencils, as that's what I use when doing stained glass - they are no good for outdoors, as changes in temperature cause it to flake off - usually just enough to make it cryptic and mysterious...

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

I like cryptic and mysterious, but thanks for the heads-up on the grease pencils.

Southern Dutchess Co, NY(Zone 5b)

What is with the rhyming tonight, Victor? Is it part of the cryptic and mysterious?

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Maybe cryptic rhyming? Chryming?

Southern Dutchess Co, NY(Zone 5b)

Very good! You are the bard of DG!

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Good bard?

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Good or bard? Which is it??!

I just pop the slugs in between my fingers when I find them...................of course I have gloves on. I know.....ewwwww.

Whenever I worked in the greehouse in college, we used plain 'ole pencils to mark our sticks or to write on the plastic. Lasts longer.

Southern Dutchess Co, NY(Zone 5b)

You are in rare form tonight, Victor! Bard, very bard.

Alicemv, that's what I was thinking about using pencil. It seems to last a good long time. And ewwww is right! I used to just toss the slugs and grubs out onto the road to let them meet their fate while I worked out front. Otherwise the nasty things meet with the bottom of my shoe. Different story if I happen to be barefoot! Double gak!

Aquebogue, NY(Zone 6a)

Yeah, you're right ........ewwww, Gak x 2. But, I'm just so busy, I don't think twice.
Having them meet their fate is funny! LOL.

Moscow, ID(Zone 5a)

I used to throw them over the fence for years before the property next door was developed. A couple years back I started chucking them over as I made my way down the property line. I got caught up in my little Olympic event, then realized that a group of teens was on the other side of the fence. I thought it would be funny to yell "incoming"! & keep the momentum going, but could not get over the visual of having slugs raining down on me. Bad enough that they crawl - sure glad they can't fly.
I'm with Pirl: division & burial.

Anyone try permanent waterproof lightfast markers? Staedtler makes some.

Why not just get the Sharpie Laundry markers? Red, Blue, Green, Black, Purple. If that is not exquisit enough, go to the local trophy dealer and have them engrave black/brass or just even plain brass tags. You bring the tags home and drill 2 holes and mount them on a stake. Those will last for a million years.

Sherrie - if we do that it's insurance that the plant will die a sad death, even worse than the slugs.

Here's a label gone bad:

I've tried the colored markers which are supposed to be indelible or archival. Everything fades so much that I can't read the writing! I'm never sure of the dates I repotted or when to expect blooms! And these are the houseplants, so markers outdoors will have more extreme elements to wear them away.

Milton, MA(Zone 6a)

Sharpies may be waterproof for laundry marking, but ask anyone on the Winter Sowing Forum - they are NOT weatherproof. Sadder but wiser, Carrie

Questa, NM(Zone 5b)

I read in my book that tossing slugs out of your yard doesn't work, because they always return to where they were. Darn! I had been tossing them over the fence. Sometimes I'd toss them into the street. Sounds like I'm not the only one! My son would always feel sorry for them and tell me not to kill them, but to relocate them. Sheesh. I told him that I admire his compassion, but to look the other way while I crush the little buggers.

Boxford, MA(Zone 6a)

How 'bout just put out a dish of beer and let the slugs party themselves to death? Some bozo threw a beer can into my garden and it was full of drunken slugs by the time I got to it. Ew, indeed, but at least all I had to do was dispose of the can-no slime on the hands! Does the beer kill them or just make them so happy they drown?

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

They drown just as they would if you dropped them into soapy water.

They don't get a little BUZZ before their 02 is depleted from their body and brain?

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

I think they take that secret with them.

Calvert City, KY(Zone 7a)

I think we need a new thread called "Pirl's Witty Words of Wisdom".....everytime I start to take a sip of water I somehow run across one of her specials of the day, like the post above.

Seldom have I had a cleaner keyboard and screen.

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

So glad I'm good for something.

Bid,
Pirl

Calvert City, KY(Zone 7a)

Just for that, Pirl...
we'll change it to Priceless Witty Words of Wisdom.....

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Sharon - maybe you can tell me why I recoil when I hear people speak of potting soil as "dirt". To me it's soil, not dirt.
