Houston Daylily Sale & Nursery Hop May 10th - Planning time!

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

It's time to start making plans! The sale is less than a month away now.

Here is the link to the sale: http://www.ofts.com/bill/yardsale.html

The house where the sale is taking place is just north of the Heights in the Oak Forest part of Houston. (Google map of the address: http://maps.google.com/maps?ie=UTF-8&oe=utf-8&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&client=firefox-a&q=1522+Althea+Dr,+Houston,+TX+77018,+USA&um=1&sa=X&oi=geocode_result&resnum=1&ct=title)

The sale starts at 7:00 am sharp, and I can tell you from previous experience that you need to be there no later than 6:45. This year the Houston Hemerocallis Society is selling plants at the sale, so I'm sure the selection will be VERY nice and extensive, and the website says the prices will still be very reasonable. List of plants available: http://www.ofts.com/hhs/plantsales.html

For the past several years, various small groups of us have met there & perused the sale (with varying degrees of success depending on the size of the selection and the time of arrival.. you can ask vossner for the rest of that story!) and then gone out for breakfast and nursery hopping (also with varying degrees of success depending on the sense of directions of the participants... I'll bring a map this time! LOL.)

I'm hoping this year YOU can join us!!! ^_^

Here's our previous discussion: http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/815014/

Where would you like to go nursery hopping? There are several fun nurseries in the Heights area that could keep us busy and several hours without using up too much gas. Or we could be adventurous and head north to Arbor Gate, or west to Teas or.... Here is the Go Gardening page showing a list of fun plant places within 50 miles of the sale: http://davesgarden.com/products/go/advanced.php?zip_distance=50&zip=77018&state=xx&country=XX&type=&search_text=&sorter=distance&submit=Search

Ok, it's your turn! What are you thoughts, ideas, and opinions? Are you coming? Which daylilies caught your eye on the webpage?

This is going to be fun!!! ^_^

I'd like to go. What are nearest hotels to place? Or closest to someone that I could hitch a ride with so that I don't have to test my memory of Houston. I grew up there but moved away 25 yrs ago. I suspect a few things may have changed. lol Heaven knows I wouldn't have gotten so old I just can't remember. lol

Anne

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

Yayy, Anne!! I put a link in the second post to a list of nearby motels. Houston has changed a bunch in the past 10 years that I've lived here, so I can imagine it would be a lot different after 25 years!

Houston Heights, TX(Zone 9b)

Candace and I are interested as well.

There are a number of hotels around the 610 and 290 area (Courtyard at 2504 North Loop, Comfort Inn Brookhollow, etc.). I can't personally make a recommendation as I've not stayed at any of those in a really long time. I'll be happy to help out if I can - Candace and I both live in this area of town.

Nearby nurserys I'd recommend checking out are Buchannans, Another Place in Time and Joshuas. All are within this area of town. If interested in tropicals, there is Zone9Tropicals (check out the website below - he's open by appointment - crazy plants you won't find anywhere else)

I'm not so good at attaching links, but will try below

Fredericksburg, TX(Zone 8a)

Marylyn, I want one of those you have a picture of.:) What is it?

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

Ummm... Good question. I bought it at the sale last year or the year before. I left his tags on, but they have all sunk below the soil line. I'll try to figure it out and let you know. :-)

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

I'm bumping up the thread in hopes of finding more interested people - and more opinions/suggestions/decisions of places to go. I'm perfectly happy hanging out in the Heights area, if you all want to. ^_^ But if someone else has other ideas or preferences, chime in!

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

We only have a week now! No one is chiming in with any suggestions, so I'm going to assume we're going to stay in the Heights area. Here is a map of some great nurseries in the area. I e-mailed the Zone 9 Tropicals folks, too, and asked if we could visit on that Saturday. I'll let you know what they say. For the moment, they are not on this map, though, because I don't have their address.

Does anyone in the area have any suggestions for a place to go to breakfast?

I've been thinking about comming, but I still have to find out when my sister in law will be in town.
Tabitha

Fredericksburg, TX(Zone 8a)

I have no clue about what places are near by, but usually when I want a good breakfast I go to a IHOP or something like that. I have blood sugar issues, so protein is a must. As far as nurseries, we are on such a limited budget that I will only be window shopping probably, but I have always wanted to see Zone 9 Tropicals. I have heard it's a really cool place. I expect to spend my money at the daylily sale.:)

Seguin, TX(Zone 8b)

Well...unfortunately I think I will have to bow out of this one for sure...it is Mother's day weekend and I will be spending it with my mom. Have fun though!

:) Kim

Fredericksburg, TX(Zone 8a)

We'll miss you Kim! Going to this sale is my Mother's Day present.

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

Wayne from Zone 9 is hoping to be out of town that weekend, so we probably won't be able to visit there this time. Maybe next year. :-) I gave him my cell phone number and he is going to call me if his plans fall through.

IHOP is fine with me. I know there is one up 290 from the daylily sale. It isn't exactly in the direction of the Heights, but it isn't very far, either. There's a Denny's even closer, if that will do.

I'm sorry you can't come, Kim!

Tabitha, I hope you can come.

Mary Lee, I'm going to be buying on a budget, too, but it'll be fun to wander around anyway, I think. ^_^ I need to weed my yard before you get here and discover how pathetic a gardener I really am. LOL ;-)

Joey in Conroe, TX(Zone 8b)

what kind of food are y'all interested in? I haven't lived in the Heights in a while, but the 11th street Cafe used to be very good. Quaint kind of neighborhood restaurant, Theres also Yale street Grill an old fashion family run kind of place, just your typical grits and biscuits kind of place, and it is attached to an antique store if you can resist that temptation LOL.
The absolute best place would be House of Pies on Kirby, they serve standard breakfast stuff and have really great muffins. But of course its the pies that are to die for, the Bayou Goo can make you cry! Its not really on the way to the Heights, but terribly far either.
It' been a while since I have been to any of these, but they have always been good when I was there.
Of course if you like a Mexican flair Taqueria Arandas is always good too!
Sorry about punctuation, typing one handed with sleeping kid...

College Station, TX(Zone 8b)

I was going to come, but I think that I will focus on irises right now. I don't really have a place for daylilies but do for the irises. So maybe next year.

Anne

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

Awww, we're sorry, Anne. Hopefully next year. :-)

Buffalo, TX(Zone 8b)

What a piece of luck for me! Mother's day weekend I have to pick up my sister to take her to mom's for Sunday. I will spend Friday night with her and we'll make the sale before going on to Orange. Yahoooooo!

Sorry for the exuberance. Couldn't help myself! LOL
Charlene

Buffalo, TX(Zone 8b)

Let's plan a way of finding each other at the sale. Maybe we could have lunch or brunch together afterward.

What would even make it better is if we each brought two or three daylilies to trade.

Any takers?

Charlene

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

Yayy, Charlene!! I'm glad you and your sister are coming! ^_^

I'll be wearing my DG t-shirt, so hopefully I will be fairly easy to find at the sale. As the daylily sale winds down, maybe we can all regroup at the bottom of the driveway, so we can get to wherever we go to breakfast together. Is that specific enough? I can post of picture of me if it will help... Or you can just look for the tall heavy lady with a DG shirt that matches her gray hair. LOL

As far as breakfast goes, I looked up breakfast-y restaurants in the surrounding zip codes and got this list. The daylily sale is in zip code 77018. The nurseries in the Heights are in 77008. 77009 is the next zip to the east, 77092 is directly south of 77018 and directly west of 77008. 77040 is the next zip west of 77092 - not very far away, but not in the direction of the nurseries. Still, that is where the closest IHOP is, and at least they are fairly consistent as to menu and quality. :-) Also they would have no problem dealing with a group with not much notice.

Of the other places on this list, I went to Yale Street Grill with Debbie a couple of years ago and it was ok. It is small, so a group may be a little more of a problem for them. It is very close to the nurseries, though, which is a plus.

Has anyone else anything good or bad to say about the others, or any preferences? Silverfluter needs protein, so I didn't look at doughnut shops or places like Starbucks that have pastries, but nothing more solid.

Wow, that list is way too much for me.:) My needs are really simple. Anywhere that serves eggs, bacon and coffee is great for me. Almost anyplace will have that, except a donut house I guess.

If Zone 9 is not an option, then any of the others is fine.

Houston Heights, TX(Zone 9b)

If you want ideas for Breakfast and Lunch (I live in zip code 77009)-
My favorite breakfast place is Triple A Restaurant
2526 Airline Dr Houston TX 77009 713.861.3422 (classic diner - been here for years)

Neither is fancy - but it great food.............Lynne

Fredericksburg, TX(Zone 8a)

Are they big enough for a group? And how many people do we have now? We will be 2.

Buffalo, TX(Zone 8b)

Well, I am not going to get to make it after all. Sis and I are going to go early to mom's and spend Saturday with her.

Buy lots of pretty daylilies and have a good time.

Charlene

Fredericksburg, TX(Zone 8a)

We will miss you Charlene. Have a good Mom's Day.:)

Buffalo, TX(Zone 8b)

Thanks Silver, you do the same. :)
Charlene

Humble, TX

I can come! I can come!

Trading daylilies sounds fun since I too am on a rather limited budget. Right now I only have tall yellow daylilies, orange ones that aren't blooming yet, and this one that is smaller, but has an interesting brush of maroon on the petals.

I also have lots and lots of bannana stumps that I dug out to make room for vegetables. I hate to throw them in the trash, but I don't want a hundred bannana trees in my compost pile either. I would be more than happy to bring them if someone would like one, some, a dozen...

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

Right now we have 7 people signed up to come, plus my sister-in-law may be joining us sometime later that morning. I guess we don't need a large restaurant after all. :-) Lynne, Triple A looks great! I'll add it to "the" map. :-)

Here's the map, rearranged and with Triple A added. We are not committed to these nurseries in this order! It is just the order we will drive past them after leaving the restaurant and heading into the Heights. We can decide now which ones to go to, or decide at breakfast, or just everyone go their own way - whatever works. :-)

Just 2 days now!! Are you all ready? Do you have your wish lists made? Comfy shoes lying by the door? Do you know which nurseries you want to go to afterwards?

Does anyone want some monkey grass??? I have lots and I need to thin it out. Or some dwarf liriope with pretty white flowers? Boston ferns? Sprigs of fresh rosemary for putting on your dinner Saturday night? :-)

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

Here is a picture of me at the College Station RU, just so we can find each other. I'm in between Frostweed and Smockette.

Joey in Conroe, TX(Zone 8b)

I'm ready! I was unsure before about nursery hopping and now I know I cant make it LOL I have to either bring both my kids or leave the little one home with the bigger one. Either way its going to shorten my trip considerably! :(

Fredericksburg, TX(Zone 8a)

Well, Jojo I hope we can meet at a RU sometime. It's a shame you can't make it. I'm going to leave the choice of nurseries up to the people who have money to spend. I'm sure any of them will have great plants for me to drool over.:)

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

Awww, I'm sorry, jojoringer. I completely understand, though! My dh doesn't have to work this Saturday (yayy!), but last year I had to be home by 8:30 so he could be at work by 9:00. It put a big crimp in my fun!

We'll be happy to meet you at the daylily sale, anyway. :-)

This is me. The red hair makes me a little easier to find in a crowd.

Great picture Tabitha! Today was lots of fun. I hope it can be an annual event. It sure makes a great Mother's Day present.:)

Rockport, TX(Zone 9a)

It was such a fun day! I enjoyed meeting all of you and I hope it does become an annual event.

Tabitha, you and your kid are too cute! Hope you're having a great Mother's Day.

Even though I was late and had to take y'alls leftovers, I'm really happy with my selections! I got Ebony Laminate and Elfin Illusion. I hope I don't kill them. I planted them yesterday just in time for a good soaking rain.

Next year, I want to get the rest of them!

Humble, TX

I had a great time. I hope everyone had a very happy mother's day!
Tabitha

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

I had a wonderful time, too! We definitely need to do it again next year - if not sooner. ^_^

Rockport, TX(Zone 9a)

Marylyn, as I remember it, you have the Mexican Plum with no plums right? Mine had some very red plums the other day and I wondered what they look like when ripe. This morning, I saw the branches moving and took out my binoculars in time to see a Mockingbird pick and swallow the last ripe one. There are still some that aren't quite ripe. I tasted one just so I would get the chance. It was OK even half green. I bet they're really good when ripe. Anyway, thought maybe you don't have plums because you've been feeding the birds.

Here's a shot of some of the half-ripe ones.

The half-dead free beautyberry is looking fully dead now. I'll give it a while though just to see if it comes back.

I have to post one more time! I'm so excited! My plumeria has buds! I remember that we talked about them at breakfast. This one blooms more than my others, but it didn't bloom last year. I think it doesn't like it when it rains too much.

Tabitha, I didn't accept your generous banana offer b/c I already have some. I grew some pink bananas from seed. One bloomed for the first time last fall. It got little bananas but they froze before they got big enough to turn pink. Yesterday, I noticed that I have a bloom on one of the stalks that didn't freeze! I can't wait to have little pink bananas!

Check out the little plumeria buds! Whoo-hoo!
