Common Grackle
Daily Pics #94
Great pics everyone!
Especially love the Brown Pelican photo sequence! When we get a chance to go to the Florida Gulf Coast, DH and I love the Brown Pelicans and 'their sequence' that you showed Adelbertcat! We missed going there the past two Winters and it's a joy to 'see them' with your pics!

I saw a common redpoll for the first time this year. I am sure they have been around, but until you get the binocs on them, you see they are not a finch or sparrow.
Everyone's pictures are so wonderful. Sure enjoy looking at all the pictures.
That pelican dive makes me laugh. Great catch!
Wow great pics everyone!!!
Linth,Excellent shots! Love all of them!
Rose, Great job! Love the Bluebird!
adel, Way to go!! Nice series!!
nanny, Congrats on the Purple Finch!!
I'm so sad this morning. I went to take my neighbor's trash out and I saw that she had some nice pieces of wood stacked there. Then I realized that it was the branch that had the Downy wooodpecker nest in it. I looked in her trash and there was a tupperware container with four perfect downy babies in it.
Here's a picture that I took the day before yesterday of the Downy flying away from the nest. The nest cavity was right behind him. That whole branch came down and broke into pieces. I was afraid that was going to happen. The squirrels kept leaping on it from another tree. They probably knocked it down.
That is sad :(
That is ashame!
At least it wasn't sawn off by anyone . . natural disasters happen, there's nothing can be done about them.

Well, nature found a way to perk me up. I had the sprinkler on in front and I went around the house to see about hanging a nest box for the Downy's on a tree there. I was greeted by a Common Yellowthroat, a Solitary Vireo and a Golden-Cheeked Warbler!!!
This is the worst picture that I've posted yet. I tried to set the camera without looking away from the bird and accidentally put it on portrait mode. I have to post it anyway b/c I'm just so excited! You don't see endangered species everyday when you live 8 miles from downtown Houston!
Hope I ID'd it right. I saw a pair last year at this time and they stayed for a few days before heading to central Texas. I must go do my taxes now!
Edit: I don't think I did ID it correctly. Another picture shows that the eyeline is more olive -- maybe a Black-Throated Green Warbler traveling through?

On that view, could be either Black-Throated Green or Golden-cheeked. Can you post the other pic ("Another picture shows that the eyeline is more olive") please?
Resin
Wow, you have a lot of those guys!
We have a few here. They are not well received around this area.
They're sinking!!!! :D
Thanks! That greenish crown confirms it as Black-Throated Green Warbler. Golden-cheeked differs in having a black crown.

Thanks Resin! I looked at last year's photos and that's what I had last year too. I must have been trying to identify it by looking at Texas birds without considering migration. I'll get better at this eventually!
A bit of a disappointment, but it's still fun to have a northeastern/Canadian bird.
Julie, Thats a very nice pic! Posing sweetly for you!
Nice shots adel! That is alot of Cormorants!
cparts, Nice shot of the Canada Geese!
Nice one Frank!
Pretty pic w/ the blue sky background Mrs Ed!
