Daily Pics #94

Melbourne, FL

Time to start a new thread birdlovers! Little doubt what I would start off with....I was so glad I was able to get a decent pic yesterday. Painted Bunting (male).

Catbird. First year I have had several of these, and they are quite the characters.

Beautiful start for a new thread and thanks for starting it Gardenpom! I just love those Buntings and have never seen a Catbird either.

Wonderful pics GP!

Thanks for starting the new thread!

Putnam County, IN(Zone 5b)

Thanks GP, a great start!

I just put out a 2nd humming bird feeder out back and am getting the oriole feeder ready. We get the catbirds too. My DH loves them! Had a few White-winged doves last summer also.

I was sitting at the desk, which is right by the front window, late yesterday afternoon when I heard some cheepiing. There was this fellow. Shot through the screen so it is not real clear. These are not cropped.

Nice pics nanny! Our Cardinals have been quite vocal too. It surprises me how many sounds they actually have.

Gladwin, MI(Zone 5a)

Great start! I have never seen some of these birds.

Our cardinals say "come here, come here!"

There was a nice group of buffle heads out front this morning. Trouble is that most of them were under the water fishing, or darting around behind bushes. I managed to get a bad picture of a couple though.

I love the way catbirds will jump from shrub to shrub following you, but staying hidden - and meowing GP! Beautiful white winged dove. I've never seen one - such a delicate, pewter-colored eye circle.

Hey cparts - cool water bird. I'm originally from Suttons Bay! Go Norsemen!

I think he was calling to you nanny!

Does anyone know what variety of crabapple is best liked by birds? Dogwoods and crabapples are on sale at my local Home Depot. The dogwoods are $16.99 (tiny, but look very healthy).

Rockport, TX(Zone 9a)

Love the Painted Bunting shots.
Nanny, nice cardinal close-ups!
cpartschick, I don't think I've seen a buffle head before -- cool pic!

I just took this and should really wait and try to get a good photo, but it cracks me up. Here is a Solitary Vireo trying desperately to get out of my photo.

Very cute!

Gladwin, MI(Zone 5a)

Cute.
Thanks. The buffle heads are a very small duck, a diver and yes, they are pretty cool looking I think. Very close to a hooded merganser in looks, but the hooded males have more markings and the females have the cool red hair.
I love being by the water this time of year and seeing all the water birds.
But I also get to come here and see birds too. Best of both worlds.

I think the vireo is saying "Look ma, I'm a hummer!"

Linthicum Heights, MD(Zone 7a)

Nice photos everyone. Gardenpom, I really like your male Painted Bunting.

Here is a close-up photo (from the past) of the male Bufflehead. Yesterday, I saw a large flock of them but they were too far off shore to get a decent photo.

This is a sight that I like to see, i.e. Wood Ducks near a nesting box. I didn't hang around long enough to see if any entered the box.

This male Wood Duck was sitting under a Weeping Willow tree. I had to lighten the image quite a bit because it was a real gray day. I think my shutter speed was 1/160 of a second.

Beautiful pics linthicum! That wood duck picture is stunning.

OP -- LOL on the vireo in hummer clothing! He was definitely having an identity crisis. He was hanging out with a Northern Parula and some other tiny bluish bird that I didn't identify. Clearly, he doesn't want to be "solitary" at all!

Thanks, Elphaba.

Here is a male Red-winged Blackbird expressing himself ............

Gardenpom,

Beautiful pics of the Painted Buntings!

Nice pics everyone!

Wood ducks are by far my favorite. They don't even look real. I love it best when they are sitting in trees. Somehow it cracks me up to see ducks in trees in the woods.

Good catch on the pictures. If I even sneak outside they are gone.

Did get some wood ducks in trees last year, but nothing near as nice as yours.

Rockport, TX(Zone 9a)

Hey guys, what is this? This picture is not the best, but this is the third time that I've seen it in the last few days and this is the best picture yet! It's kind of a big bird to be so colorful. Can't find anything like it in my book.

Oh Congratulations Elphaba; he's beautiful!!!

Rockport, TX(Zone 9a)

Cool! Thanks. It was in my book, but I only skimmed the warblers b/c I thought it was too big to be a warbler. The book, however, points out that it's the largest warbler. I love it when I get to mark a new bird as spotted!

I'm having a hard time w/ Grackles lately so only a few pics here.

GP those bunting are something, thanks for opening this new thread.
Elphaba, congrat onyour new bird. he's very handsome.
OP, I wish, I could give you a name for the crabapples, the one I have makes really small apples, red on the inside. The blooms are pink. The Robins and Waxwings really loves them.
Here are the waxwings eating some of it.
