Signs of spring- What do you have blooming?

Alamogordo, NM(Zone 7b)

Lovely collage tab! So soothing and nicely arranged. My collage software doesn't let me change much. Spring has been here for months and my white iris have all come and gone. Today we finally got some sprinkles, not measurable rain. And it is cold--62' feels almost like winter is back! But this Oleander just started to bloom last week. It is a large 9ft. shrub.

Thanks for the heads up on the Ornith. I will get rid of it. I thought it was a no-no but it's the first year after 3 years in the garden that it has had a bloom...

I have big ornith. in the garden too. But it died out. Not supposed to be invasive.

Did the ornith. kill his daffodils?

Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5b)

No, It's Blee, as you probably guessed. He grows a lot of very, very weird stuff...pricey & exotic. It overgrew anything it came in contact with, including some rare (but small) dwarf conifers. It reseeds, so if you pick the flowers, I think you'll be okay. Neal, is that right? If she can get all the flowers before seed she'll be okay?

I have some white bulbs blooming ....sort of a loose, open Hyacinth, but I forget the name. These are about 12" tall, and they would have been open on Mother's Day but I didn't see them.

In fact, a lot of things opened on the Tuesday following Mother's Day, it just seems like I had a lag of anything with at least an 8" stem to use as cut flowers for that day. That Hesperus is not like a Phlox after all -- there are side branches coming off the main flowering stem and I can see how it would get out of hand very fast. I forgot to sniff it because it's supposed ot have a fragrance. The peonies have big fat buds, and I am going to go to the peony coop to see if any of the flowers offered are EARLY bloomers.

These Ornithogalum that are all over the yard don't really bloom that much, just here and there, so I'm not sure that the invasive spread is just from seeding alone. The bulbs do divide quickly, so I think they must spread both ways. It doesn't really seem to bother anything else or choke other plants out.

I love Hesperus (Dame's Rocket)! I saved seed from some I saw growing last year and wintersowed them, so I should have lots of bloom next year. They do have a soft, sweet fragrance. They have a phlox-like appearance to me too, and are nice for giving the early garden that kind of texture and height. Butterflies seem to like them too. Mine are mostly purple with some white mixed in, so wouldn't help with looking for white flowers, but I can brings extras to the RU if you'd like some for the butterfly garden.

Well, I was just teasing you about the mothers' day bouquet! I know you have boat loads of flowers for bouquets for your mom!

Thanks for mentioning the Peony Co-op. I always forget to check the co-op forum for what's coming up. I could use some white early peonies, too. I think the ones I have are magenta and won't do at all in my scheme! I haven't really had my peonies bloom much--I planted them 3 years ago and they were just twigs. Last year I got a couple of flowers...and now I may have to 'shovel prune'.

Now watch that Dame's Rocket! That's an 'illegal' in Ohio although I think it's beautiful along the roadways. I tried to grow it but it fizzled on me.

Next time you are in Batavia, come to see me. I'm not far at all.

Good day today in the garden. My son provided the 'muscle' and I got a lot of rearranging, weeding, and planting done. (He's really a dear to me.)

Found this sweet tulip(?) in the garden today. Sure is pretty!

This is my little garlic patch. In about 6 weeks..hope to have lots of garlic!! Yum! My daughter made the "vegetable" sign ten years ago for me for mothers day. It is amazing what a 6 year old can do with two old sticks and some paint! I will cherish it always...

Found this gorgeous pansy today while pulling weeds. Not sure where he came from, but I was happy to have him visit my garden.

Oh, that really is a pretty pansy. I have a weakness for them. :)

This is the blue and white columbine from the Magic Spring mix. It is only about 15" tall. Of the 3 planted last Spring, only 2 made it through the winter.

The blue flower here is Veronica prostrata 'Nestor". SDB Iris Jewel Baby makes a nice combination with it.

Summoned Spirti is blooming in the back yard now and I think I will move it to the other side of the Veronica next year to add even more color to the front yard.

Or maybe this little unknown SDB Iris would go even better with the Veronica.

'Burgundy' Tulips which I am very excited to see have come up their second year. Actually much better than my Darwins. I think I had heard someone else say the lily flowered tulips were more perennial than Darwins for them, so that's why I tried them. : )

Now normally I would not brag about a dandelion blooming in my yard, but it isn't such a bad thing when it attracts one of these : )

Lincolntess, it wouldn't be spring with out a good photo show of your garden! I miss your posts! I don't know how I've missed you around DG--we must be posting on opposite forums!

LOL well, Meredith, whatever works to get the swallowtails, right!?! Now we'll all be growing dandylions like crazy. Of course, I think I already am! What kind of ST is that? (I am never sure and am trying to learn the differences).

Southeastern, NH(Zone 5b)

It is a black swallowtail :) I had to compare pictures of them with spicebush to be sure. They look so similar!

Elegant Lady Tulips opened yesterday. This is there second year, so I am happy to see them back : )

I gotta stop coming to this thread - I'm going to be broke.

I got some of the iris from the co-op last fall (if you like iris DO NOT MISS THE IRIS SOCIETY CO-OP - these babies are incredibly vigorous and beautiful) I didn't get the purple/whites that are planted with this one, but this is Silverado...

Oh tabasco, Susan (lincolnitess) has a most glorious garden throughout the season that just keeps getting better! You're in for a real treat as the growing season progresses! Here's some eye candy:

Susan, I admire your gardens so much I had to brag on you :-) Tabasco and I share a great appreciation for well orchestrated plantings; had to show what she's been missing! Your gardens are top notch!

Oh, and my bleeding hearts are also in bloom. You can see them in the last pic.

Here's a view of the garden from the front (I couldn't fit the whole thing in, so this is just the middle).
Actually, now that I look at it, I think that it's a little to contrived to be a cottage garden, and maybe I should post the pics on the perennial section.

Sooo pretty, pgt! You have a beautiful garden. :)

The thing that makes me happy is that soon my garden's going to look like yours. Just need to give this zone a little time to warm up.

Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5b)

Nice, PGT! I love the Geranium-Salvia combination, especially.

Here is my Azalea...Te pic was taken about a week ago, but it is still blooming. It is a decidusous Azalea from the Exbury series. I bought it in a 2 1/2" pot decades ago.

I wish I had bought one of every color!

This is Stachys 'Chinook' with Baby Blue Eyes Nemophilia. I think it's Nemophilia - it's a reseeder from last year. It is washed out in the photo.

I think this might be Silene diocea, but I'm not sure.. There are not as many leaves on the scape as what is pictured in PFs -- just flowers that come up fom a basal rosette. This was wintersown last year and I LOVE IT!

If anybody recognizes it for sure, please let me know!

Beautiful garden pgt! Do you know the name of the blue salvia? It is perfect with the JB geranium.

Thanks for bragging about my garden gemini_sage. I've been an admirer of both Tabasco's and your gardens for awhile now. Sometimes I think I need to move everything and start all over again. Sure would do a lot of things differently.

Suzy, love that color of Azalea. You really do seem to know just how to combine things to get that cottage garden touch. Can't wait to see how your garden progresses over the seasons.

I've got dicentra in full bloom. The blues behind it are from polemonium 'Purple Rain' and vinca minor, which are also blooming. I love the combo of pinks and blues/lavenders!

Lincolnitess: I bought it last year at Home Depot, and I THINK it was May Night (I'm 95% sure).

I've really enjoyed looking at all the pictures in this thread, I'm getting lots of ideas. Someone please hide my credit card!
