Last year's crosses, this year's vines/blooms!

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

I thought I would start a fun thread. I did a lot of cross pollinating last year for fun! I really mixed it up because you just never know what the possibilities are! :-)

I am WAY behind on my MG seed starts this year, but I decided to add a seed to an existing pot with my Trumpet Creeper vine in it. (I have to keep that BAD BOY contained!) I got some outstanding results from one of my crosses.

This is from my Lady Laura (Pink Form) that I crossed with Yaguruma Blizzard. Yeah, I know. Weird cross. The very first bloom which I didn't get a photo of looked like something you would call Lady Laura Blizzard. But today's blooms are totally crazy looking!

Here's the mom vine: http://davesgarden.com/community/blogs/i/36516/
Here's the dad vine: http://davesgarden.com/community/blogs/i/36559/
Another photo of dad that shows that light blue coloration (or possibly a white in the shadows which makes it look light blue) in the bloom :
http://davesgarden.com/community/blogs/i/44091/

And here is the second and third blooms on this new vine! Ain't she pretty?!!!

Be warned to all who got seeds from me ... you might just get some interesting blooms!!!!!

Wow Becky, that is so pretty! Great job :-)

Netcong, NJ(Zone 5b)

Interesting that the cross shows a large(!) white edge (that is not displayed on either parents) to accentuate the blizzard markings...(!)

Louisville, KY

yeah i wanna know how (!) that (!) happened (!).... holy%^$#$@!!!!

Houma, LA

That is so pretty. I wish I would have been around to get seeds from you. If this is what could be expected then what a joy that would be.

Becky, I`m curious have you noticed the white picotee on your Yaguruma blizzard varies from very thin to increasing thickness of white on new flowers? It did that on my Yagurumas and I wondered if yours showed this trait at any point in time. I also have seen this thin picotee white edge that begins thin and increases on the Berry Ice as well.

BTW, I`d love to see more pictures as this one progresses. I`m curious if that is white around the edge or lighter very light wash of color looking blueish or if there is a ray pattern. Karen

Edited to add:

There was one vine I grew that was a cross between a blizzard and a solid chocolate flower with a thin white picotee. The first flower was solid with a slightly visible ray pattern and thin white picotee. Then with each flower the ray pattern became more apparent as the edges lighted and the white around the edge increased. Then it began to show increasing blizzard streaks. This F1 did not resemble either parent but when I grew some of the F2 then some of the offspring showed more favoring to one or the other parents in the original cross.

Thanks everyone! I went out to look at them several times again. I swear that the color is pale blue instead of white on the border and blizzard markings! The throat was more of a whitish or very light pink. I remember last year when I grew the Yaguruma Blizzard vine that the early flowers looked pale blue then, too! I also looked at all my photos of YB. On a few of the blooms as the vine aged, the border did widen, but not like this cross. Go figure. I will continue to monitor and photograph this vine and the blooms.

I have more crosses to start. Some I have received from others here on the forum.

Nice work Becky.

With flash. You can still see the pale blue even though the photo is washed out from the close-up flash. It's definitely got light blue in the bloom!!!

I just can't believe that! it is just .... so .... unique and stunning! Gosh as soon as you get seeds from that plop 'em in and get more then dang, send me some. I'll pay!!!!

really really nice Becky! Put them on the 08 thread too for sure.

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

Soulja - If this produces seeds like it's parents did, I should have plenty to share with all who want some! :-) Will post a photo on the 08 thread, too! Thanks for reminding me.

I just started some seeds from one of Gourd's crosses. (Blue Jishi and Ten Ten) I am really, really interested to see how these blooms turn out. Very exciting cross, Antoinette! I am only planting 3 of the seeds and will save the last 2 for the next grow-out. I will be starting all my April 2008 grow-outs this weekend. So can't wait to see lots and lots of MG blooms of all colors in about a month! Look out May 2008!

GREAT WORK!, BECKY~~
JUST BEAUTIFUL
:D

I am so in love with that cross Becky. I have no blooms yet from seeds-many from all of you here : ) hopefully soon!
I already can't wait to try crosses!

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

Thanks fernman and flowerhead! :-)

Here is today's bloom. You can still see the pale blue even with the camera flash wash-out. But I can already see that the blue is becoming more white. I had the same thing happen on my Yaguruma Blizzard blooms last season. Too bad, as I really liked the pale blue color and deep pink combo.

This vine is turning out to be a MOST interesting cross. Check out what the blooms looked like today. Take a look at the shape of the blooms. Very, very interesting. Obviously picking up something from an earlier generation of vines.

And another bloom on the vine today. This is ONE vine with lots and lots of branching off of the main trunk of this vine.

This is a closer view of the smaller, odd shaped bloom from the photo I posted 1st from today.

I got a flush of blooms today on this vine and also finally got some pollen in some of the blooms so got my trusty paint brush out and did some dusting on all the blooms! :-) Now I have my fingers crossed and will wait and see!

Awesomely Amazingly Atomic!!!
I've come to a conclusion.
This needs no Baby Daddy.
It's pretty perfect as it is!
Thanks for the photos Becky!

Like a Majestic Butterfly...wow...beautiful. Just stunningly beautiful.

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

Thanks Shawna and Aunt_A! :-)

I still want to cross with yours, Shawna! I think it would make a magnificent vine and the blooms would be stunning! So who's the daddy??? I want to use your MG pollen!!!! And I will send you some pollen from mine in a couple of weeks when yours starts blooming more! :-)

Mesilla Park, NM

Becky, those are great... keep on, keeping on.. they look great!

Louisville, KY

as soon as I spy some pollen I'll gently brush it into these tiny sauce containers, like from a Chinese restaurant, and along with seeds, I'll zap it to you. Since I put them out, minimal bloomage. I brought this one in last night. But Big Daddy's livin large outside in sunny 80 degrees right now. I just brought him the sports page and a Heineken....

men....

Jacksonville, AR(Zone 7b)

LOL Shawna, love Baby Daddy and Becky's cross. Both are really
stunning.

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

Shawna - This is quoted from Ron in a d-mail reply he sent me asking about saving pollen:

Once you are using dry pollen wrap it in waxed type paper so that the pollen doesn't get absorbed into the paper...and once it is dry,the waxed paper can be placed into a small plastic baggie for shipment...

I leave the pollen in the folded waxed paper on plastic plates on a shelf in my kitchen...just not too hot or no excessive moisture or dryness...

The main concerns during shipping are to prevent decay, but if the pollen is dry and sent within a few days it should be okay...the waxed paper can be taped close and placed into a piece of cotton cloth which is placed into the outer shipping container...

Louisville, KY

got it. just waiting for more blooms!

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

Jackie - Thanks! I agree ... what a great cross the two vines would make!!! :-) Hopefully, I will get lots and lots of seeds! :-)
