Blooming in April

Raleigh, NC(Zone 7b)

Rosa 'Crépuscule' - one of my favorites. Nice colors, fragrant, no problems with black spot. It's covered in blooms now and will rebloom periodically until fall.

Tom I like those. No problems with black spot at all? How long do they bloom for you, off and on for the season?

I like roses because for me they bloom from earily spring till frost which for me is about 10 months. The black spot problem is annoying me, more work than I really want to do.

I have never seen black spot on either Rosa mutabilis or Crépuscule in my yard. Mutabilis will bloom more or less continuously from spring to fall - best flush of flowers is in spring but it will have at least a few flowers almost all the time and other flushes periodically. Crépuscule has its best flush in spring but will have smaller flushes throughout the summer until fall. Both of these are climbers/ramblers and will need a fence or trellis for support to look their best. If you want to grow R. mutabilis be sure to give it plenty of room and be prepared to cut it back - it can get pretty big. Here's a closeup of the flowers - they open almost white and age to dark pink.

Tom your roses are awesome! They are one of my favs to grow but blk spot has gotten me down on them the last two years...I have tried the Bayer systemic treatment but I still see some...I am met. at picking up and picking off infected leaves...anyone have any other things they use?

I have 4 Qn Elizabeth, Kennedy, Baby face, Angel face and three dbl knockouts coupled with several carpet varieties (these seem to do better - Perhaps because they are way out front on their own?)

Anyways...anyone else who has an effective method please share! Thanks

Here is another carefree rose. Slater's Crimson China. This is one of the original roses that was introduced in Charleston in the 1700's. This one was grown from a cutting that was rustled from an old cemetery in Chas. It pretty much stays in bloom about 10 months of the year.

OOOh! A blue azalea. That's amazing!

This little Verbena decided to come back from last year. I was sure it wouldn't and was pleasantly surprised to see it making a try.

Hello everyone. I'm new here, hope you don't mind my joining in. My husband and I have just moved into a new house with a big yard to plant things in. I have no idea what may pop up this summer from the previous owners plantings, I look forward to discovering it all. Here are some things that are already blooming (or that I planted).

GL love that Centaura in the first pic - I think all the early rain really helped the az out too! nice pics!

Here are some pink Spanish bluebells... several years ago, I ordered a mix, but somehow I ended up with mostly pink and only a few blue and white.

Rosa mutabilis ... this pic shows the color variation. I will change my previous opinion of "no fragrance" to slight fragrance - today when it was in full bloom I detected a bit of a spicy/fruity fragrance.

Here is rose 'Pat Austin' - normally she is a softer color but apparently due to recent conditions she's a really loud orange. Does get some blackspot but hasn't died yet in spite of indifferent care and no spraying.

Glandrews, I too love the blues in your garden and our azaleas were unusually pretty this year also.

Tom, the mutabilis is my favorite rose and for some reason I don't have one in my garden; I 'm always trying to fine the right spot for one. It's nice to know it has a slight fragrance.

Deb, the azalea I pictured is really lavender, not blue, but in some lights is does have a bluish cast to it.

Georgetown, SC(Zone 8a)

Diehrd: No! Got a photo?

I was driving home and heard the weather forecast on the radio saying the low tonight was to be in the mid 40s.

Then I gethome and crank up the old laptop and there's a frost advisory on weather bug and weather underground, and the low is from the mid30s to the mid 40s, depending on which service I check. They ALL say frost! Where the heck did that come from?!! It IS April 29th, isn't it???

>:-(

Seabrook, SC(Zone 8b)

Yea, I heard several people in the Upstate post they had frost advisories up for this evening. Yikes!!!!!

Jenny

Georgetown, SC(Zone 8a)

Yikes is right! The advisory says "patchy frost" all the way down to Colleton and Dorchester. Booo! Nothing to be done, though. There's not enough laundry in the house to cover everything. Sigh.
