Harper Valley PTA
Happy birthday, Eleanor!
Doesn't count - not for a person!
My childhood neighborhood friend is an Eleanor and my very favorite teacher's real name is Eleanor though she goes by Sister Rosalita Judge. She just wrote to me in January.
My stage name is Eleanor.
Oh Victor!
My stage name is Phoebe!! Eleanor
Now that is very funny! (and true)
Eleanor!
I missed your special day! I'm so sorry!!
Happy but belated wishes to you. I'm so glad that you had a wonderful day. You, of all the people in the world, deserve to have a positively excellent birthday.
^_^
Pirl, which clematis is that in your initial post??
Candyce - Thank you so much!! Victor - The clematis looks like a Henryi that I have, but I'm just guessing cause I really don't know the fine points of identifying different varieties!! Am I right or wrong Pirl?? Eleanor
p.s. - Just planted mine last year and it only had one blossom so I don't have much to compare it too!!
It's Henryi, Victor. Eleanor, yours looks like the same one. When the flowers open it's easier to see that fine green center. It fades out in sun and with maturity of the individual flower.
Schickenlady - thank you so much for the birthday wishes! Late is fine - makes the celebration last longer!!! :-) Eleanor
Those Henryi are stingy when they first start then! I planted one early spring and only had one blossom too, so I planted another in the fall so at least I'd have two for this year! ☺
Ha! I give mine up to 1/2 bag (20 pounds) of manure each spring.
That's it!! - I'm off to find a horse, (or a Home Depot)... 'my kingdom for a horse!' - Thanks! ☺
First a handful of 5-10-5 but don't even bother to try and scratch it in. Cover with manure. DEODERIZED!
Ok, deodorized... there goes the fun. ☺
Pirl - Thanks for the icing on my hot fudge sundae and the manure advice!!! Probably shouldn't put that in the same sentence!! LOL I want my Henryi to look like your's. Maybe if it wasn't deordorized it would keep the critters away? Eleanor
I ordered Henryi this year along with Terniflora and Crystal Fountain. Looking forward to seeing how they do.
The only pest that bothers the clematis, for me, is earwigs. I may resort to spraying this year.
Thanks for the birthday wishes Sue! Eleanor
Happy Birthday again, Eleanor!!! Why shouldn't we all just start over and keep it going for you.....as we have happily done for Harper??? There are just some special people who should not have their birthdays end. LOL
Pirl - so glad you gave that manure tip for the clematis. I think mine needs it!!! I'll try it your way this spring!
Good compost is hard to beat as a covering.
Question:
Commercial manure, or composted manure from a nearby farm?
And why are we talking about manure on Eleanor's birthday thread?
I use the same stuff on my clematis I use on my roses - Mill's Magic.
Candyce - I'd vote for the nearby farm IF it didn't smell but the smell does diminish in time and might not be noticed too much if you could cover it with composted leaves.
We're talking about it here because Eleanor loves plants and, like all of our NE threads, we change subjects often enough that I only hope Eleanor won't take offense.
I get my manure from a near by farm. The farmer, George is an all natural dairy farmer and he lets us have a couple of truck loads for $5 a piece. We back the Tundra up, he dumps some in the back with the bucket loader and off we go. The neighbors have to deal with the smell for a day or two then it's not noticable. Of course I have a SPECIAL pair of boots, jeans, and gloves for the manure day!
Somehow I just assumed you wouldn't be wearing your old prom gown for that event, Pixie!
Nope, the prom gown was to poofy and kept getting in the way!
One year I dressed the scarecrow in a hot pink prom gown from the thrift shop, of course. That was my favorite.
Just watched Anne of Green Gables for the first time and your reference to the poofy sleeves reminded me of it.
I bet it was the best dressed scarecrow around!!
My prom gown didn't go well with my boots either...or is it the other way around?
It was, Celeste. It's the only one so it's the best dressed all of the time.
Scarecrows are becoming scarce, arent they? (no pun intended)
I am surrounded by country and very seldom see a scarecrow.
Cape Breton has an unbelivable field of scarecrows. Children playing, a couple getting married, old folks sitting on a park bench...excuse me, where are the old folks (like me) gardening? It truly is wonderful and worth a stop along with a donation for the clothes.
There's a town near me that lines its streets with scarecrows, of sorts, near Halloween. When I drove through at twilight last year, it was frightening. I couldn't tell which were the scarecrows and which were real people in the half light!!
