Question about Moonflowers

Wilkes Barre, PA(Zone 6a)

Hi Everyone~

This is my first year for growing Moonflowers and I have what may be a dumb question. I figure if I don't ask though, I could ruin them and I don't want to..so here goes--

I soaked them overnight and planted them. Now a few days later I have a white, what looks like a root coming out. Does that go into the dirt or point upwards? I will post a picture to show what I mean...

I have been gardening for a while but this has stumped me and like I said I don't want to ruin them..I feel silly for asking..

Don't know. Leave it and see what happens. Roots usually always grow down and the new seedling stem should grow up! I couldn't really tell in your photo because it was a bit blurry.

That's what I thought too but when you look at them(sorry for the blurry pic-I should wait to drink my coffee before taking pictures-it looked ok to me-HEHE) but they look just like roots...

I'll let them go and see what happens-thanks for the answer!

I've always (HA! always, as in the last two years) started moonflowers in paper towels. Little beggars sprout overnight! Anyway, what I see in your pictures looks a lot like the roots I see when the seeds sprout. You might try very carefully picking one out, maybe with a spoon, and rinsing it off to see what you have. If it's only been a few days, you could be seeing roots instead of stems, although that would be kind of weird.

aggscott-aggie,

Your observation and question is an excellent one...

The initial roots on the moonvine seeds can often point upwards instead of going directly down into the soil, especially when hydrated quickly and planted very shallowly...

I can see that the roots on your sprouts are pointing upwards instead of going directly into the ground and I would suggest making an opening in the medium and carefully repositioning the sprouts so that the roots are properly covered and the seedlings get a better start...

Thank you so much...I thought I better put it out there-I might not be the only one!

I have put them in a bigger pot and down lower so they should be ok-thanks again!
