Detected mistakes in PF, what to do....

Gent, Belgium(Zone 8a)

...when there comes no response ?
Sometimes the picture has been put in by a non-subscriber, so I don't know if the alert-message can reach them and i have the impression that not so many DG's are keeping track of the Plant Files Picture forum, or am I wrong ?

I'm sure somebody from admin will come along to let you know, but I seem to recall that hitting the "contact us" page from a particular PF entry is a good way to send admin a note to let them know there's a problem with the entry (whether it's in the description, a comment placed in the wrong entry, or an incorrect photo).

(Zone 1)

On each PF page there's a little box at top that says: Report an error. If you click on that box you can tell admin what the error is and they will take care of it.

When it's a picture that's wrong, you're supposed to comment on the picture to give the photographer a chance to defend why they think it's the plant they entered it under. Or I've dmailed people privately rather than doing it in the forum, I think either way is fine, the key is you need them to agree that their pic is in the wrong place, then they can request admins to move it.

I ran into a case where I did this and the person was obviously no longer around and didn't respond, so I contacted admins and they suggested posting a link to the questionable picture in the Plant ID forum to get some other educated opinions. So I did that and after I had consensus from people in that forum they moved the picture to the correct location (in the case I had, it was a very obvious difference...if the difference is more subtle then admins may decide not to move it)

We do encourage a peer review if it's a photo that's in question. We would encourage you to post (with tact of course) to the photo's discussion thread explaining why you think the photo may be misplaced, and what you think it might be if you have an idea.

The photographer will be alerted when you post your note and can be involved in the identification process right off the bat, which is part of the "peer review" environment we encourage within PlantFiles.

Once you post to the photo thread, it's also a good idea to click on the 'Report an Error' button and alert us to the potential problem. That way we can watch for further developments and possibly do some research of our own. If we are not alerted, there's a good chance that we won't see the post to the photo thread.

If it's detail errors, or nomenclature errors, once again, click on the 'Report an Error' button and tell us what you found that is wrong. It's also VERY helpful if you can include links in your report that support the correction you are requesting. It saves us lots of research time.

If you are referring to some other types of PlantFile errors, let us know what it is and we'll do our best to help.

In both cases the mistakes where in the file of Viola tricolor;
One of them is for certain Viola labradorica and is put with Viola tricolor.

The other one is probably Viola sororia also put with Viola tricolor.

I did the right procedure to click on discuss this photo, but no response came, but perhaps I'm too impatient (my post dates from 24 March) and should wait longer, but then I might forget about it...

Thanks Joan, it's good to know that I may also click on the error report at the same time.
I thought I had to post this here, because others may have the same question.

and thank you Ecrane, I think it is a good idea to post a link of the picture in question in the Plant Identification Forum if the poster of the picture doesn't respond, that would also save work for Administration.
What would be a reasonable time to wait for a response of the poster?

With the first one, she's a subscriber and I looked at what threads she's started just to get a sense of whether it's been years since she last showed up here or not, and she has some fairly recent threads started so I suspect she's around and you should hear back within a week or two. The other person isn't a subscriber and looks like they only come around to post pics in PF, so it's harder to say when they'll be around again.

Thanks Ecrane, I will be more patient!

Most definitely! Thank you!

bonitin, I have both of those threads watched now, but if there are no replies in a week or so, please jog my memory. I was tagging things I need to follow up on, but I can't do that anymore because when I try to tag something my computer freezes up. Now I have to rely on my memory, which isn't always that reliable. :0) So please, if there's been no activity in a week or so, please send me a reminder.

Thanks!

Joan

I will do that, thanks Joan, :-)
