Spring Blooms - Part 2

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Why not try starting the canna indoors??

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

Good idea, I will definatly try it. Thanks

S of Lake Ontario, NY(Zone 6a)

I have tried starting canna indoors, but not even indoors for us is warm enough to get them going, I did get quite a few blooms in a container on a sunny patio. The hummers loved it, and it was right in front of my kitchen window so I got to watch the hummers close up.

Had a couple crocus blooms open briefly, but then the clouds came in.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

They do need lots of water. I have grown them with the entire pot submerged in my pond.

S of Lake Ontario, NY(Zone 6a)

I was actually just out on the front patio wondering what I would put there this year.

Quoting:
CapeCodGardener, your second picture is a hellebore too. Helleborus foetidus. And a lovely one, at that.

Thank you, Polly and Victor--no wonder I was having such a hard time identifying it amongst the Solomon's Seal photos!
So glad to get the ID.

Hannibal, NY(Zone 6a)

CapeCodGardener,

You're welcome.

That hellebore is just marginally hardy for me, but it looks like mine have all pulled through this year, so far. Yours is a really lovely specimen.

I love the solomons seal too, so please post a picture when yours blooms. I planted one of the giant solomon seals last fall, along with a new variegated one, and can't wait to see if they made it. (Along with my Japanese iris).

Rhinebeck, NY(Zone 5b)

Mr Crocosmia: I love those fritilaria pix! I find the Persian bells Fritillaria to be quite inconsistent in its appearance in the spring...some times they bloom, sometimes they divide and put out puny blooms (or only leaves).

Do those beauties of your behave better?

Anyone else? Am I doing something wrong?

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

ge - start the cannas indoors on a heating mat. Once it's growing well it can go outdoors (probably late May to early June) in the sunniest spot you have.

Eleanor - on the previous portion of this thread you were worried about all your other daylilies. They may be dormant, which would be the reason you're not seeing any sign of them yet. By late April you should see all of them.

Appleton, WI(Zone 5a)

I'll try to ease back into it with some Easter flowers

Nice, but indoor blooms are two threads down the street - hee hee.

Appleton, WI(Zone 5a)

Nah - I don't grow anything indoor that blooms anyway, maybe I took these pics outside ;)

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Outside of your state!

Appleton, WI(Zone 5a)

No, they were from a florist growing in a pot. I won't have any flowers here until daff's.

Thanks Pirl! Eleanor

Al ... Victor ....
you guys are too much!! And, very funny!

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

You don't do crocus or other minor bulbs, Al?

Nantucket, MA(Zone 7a)

I love minor bulbs best. But I may be in the minority. Patti

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Seems logical.

Eastern Long Island, NY(Zone 7a)

... Thank you Sofonisba. The 2nd one, (in the cream dish), is a 4yr old variegated elm tree! Hee Hee! ☺

Nantucket, MA(Zone 7a)

Yes, but if logical, why did I plant more than a few thousand non minor bulbs? Bulb-a-holics aren't picky, I guess. So do you call tulips, and narcissus major bulbs or bigger bulbs, or what? Patti

Southwest , NH(Zone 5b)

What a fun thread! Where have I been??

Emily - love your hellebore!

GE - what a lovely spot with all the pretty containers!!

Pirl - great idea writing on the rocks! Your handwriting is so nice! I use a map along with markers. When I planted the new DLs that Pixie sent me, I mapped them all and just found the map the other day when I was cleaning out my purse! LOL I got so excited to think that those DLs will be coming up soon!

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

I meant it was logical for a minor bulb lover to be in the minority! Yes - major bulbs.

I mainly do photo stuff there - it's funny because they discuss politics ,which no sites do here.

Caistor, United Kingdom(Zone 8b)

no sites discuss politics?????????? that would be much better........

What sort of photo stuff do you do??

Eastern Long Island, NY(Zone 7a)

They must still have free speech... ☺

Appleton, WI(Zone 5a)

One of the site mods there wanted to get more people to enter in their weekly photo contest, she is on a different U.K. site I post on some too. I never learned metric politics - so I'm lost there ;)

Caistor, United Kingdom(Zone 8b)

what sites were these Al...........????

Eastern Long Island, NY(Zone 7a)

Jezz, they're so tiny! ... guess that's why they call them Snowdrops! ☺
