Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

As per Candyce's request, let's continue with the blooms. Look forward to seeing more people contributing photos as things warm up. Came from here:

Thank you ever so much, Victor.

Very pretty Victor, being blue is a bonus!!

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Thanks - I love blue too. Pinks and blues are my favorites.

Note the white birch across the street. Neighbors painted their house a charcoal grey to make it stand out and it does.

Been waiting a week for these crocus from Odyssey Bulbs to unfurl. The 1910 heirloom is supposed to be the darkest of all crocus. In the meantime, someone has been chewing on them. Anyone know of likely suspects? Done very neatly at night and nothing but crocus are touched.

David, those crocus are gorgeous! I have no idea who the hungry critter might be. Could be anyone.

The Monadnock Region, NH(Zone 5a)

deer, possibly?

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Beautiful shots, David. Love the tri-color. I never had any crocus eaten, so I have no suggestions.

Questa, NM(Zone 5b)

I finally have something to post! My first crocuses. I don't know why I'm getting such grainy pics. Oh well. I have blooms! They're so teeny. I have some bigger ones coming up, but they're late bloomers.

Ooops!

Very pretty little crocus.
David could be deer or any rodent type. The squirrels seem to like them here but (saying it softly so they don't hear) they haven't noticed them yet. Bambi will make a midnight snack of them too. I don't uncover mine too much for that reason, takes them longer to find them.

Congrats to both of you!

What plant is it that comes up looking like little spades?

Tucson, AZ(Zone 9b)

Things have been warm here a long time already. This is a hardenbergia vine that has already finished blooming. Linda

Beautiful two tone!

Oh wow that is really nice! We are a long way from that kind of view around here. Thanks for a look at summer.

Candyce can you get a pic of the plant you are talking about?

Clinton, CT(Zone 6b)

Sofonisba...nice! Is that a slight pink tinge to the crocus or the light? Haven't seen that color before.

ngam...think you hit it with squirrels. Must be them. One or two deer show up here every spring for one day and that's it. Haven't seen any rabbits yet. What is that dark crocus in your pic? Twilight?

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Candyce - hyacinths look like that.

David Paul - go out at night with a flashlight and see if it's slugs doing the damage.

Beautiful photos, everyone.

This is neat. I was PMing with a computer teacher in an elementary school in the Mojave desert this afternoon. Sent her the photo of the yellow crocus in the front yard posted above. Crocus growing in the Northeast are now the desktop photo of all the machines in her computer lab:

Oh very cool David. I do not know the name of the crocus, it is an old one. Got them at local nursery years ago.

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

What a lovely compliment to you, David!

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Very nice, David!

Victor...didn't see that you told us what these turned out to be:

See your Scilla is in bloom. They take a lot longer the first year? I put in 200 each of Scilla siberica 'Sring Beauty' and 'Alba'. They are from two vendors and in two different parts of the yard. Not a sign any are coming up.

pirl...isn't technology great? The computer tech left CT with her parents for the desert when she was a child. I lived down by her near the Colorado River for a decade. She wants to see New England again and I wouldn't mind spending some time in the Mojave once more (its a good wildflower season this year and Joshua trees are in bloom right now.)

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

beautiful pictures everyone... I will post more of my "baby" pictures later on... been playing with cuttings all day

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

That was daff foliage, David. Most bulbs take longer the first year.

Clinton, CT(Zone 6b)

Pirl...note how the petals on the crocus to the left is cleanly nibbled off. That was done just as it emerged. Look like slug damage?

Some Iris reticulata have been up 8 days now--a sole blurry c. tommasinianus roseus behind them.

Guess your lawn won't be mowed for a while, David!

The Monadnock Region, NH(Zone 5a)

I agree. No mowing of the lawn for DP in the near future!
And congrats on creating a very popular screen saver

Pirl ~ are slugs even out now? I would have thought it was still too cold.

ngam ~ I'll try to get a photo tomorrow.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

I saw a slug yesterday when I was cleaning up.

Thanks, everyone, for your wonderful pix! I have to spend my weeks in NYC, away from my garden, so seeing your spring blossoms sustains me!

I do, however, have heirloom tomatoes sprouting on my windowsill here in Gotham...some from seeds I bought and some from last summer's most delicious heirloom that I saved the seeds from!

Hopefully I'll have a pix to post for you all this coming weekend.

Where in the city, Daisy? I'm from Queens.

S of Lake Ontario, NY(Zone 6a)

David, I was in Joshua Tree NP the first week of March, and it was beautiful.

It's a great town. Except for spring, when all I want to do is dig in the dirt in the country!

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

All winter long, when I spent time outside on the nice days, there were mother and baby slugs (now in their cemeteries) so look under logs, rocks and all the damp spots for them and eliminate the generation you find now to lessen future damage. There were many by daylilies in full sun.

David - sounds like you and your friend could exchange visits and you'd both enjoy the respite.

The Monadnock Region, NH(Zone 5a)

*sheesh*!!!!!!
Slugs already!
