Tracey it is amazing how some lilies multiply!
Are your lilies sprouting?
Oh my! I haven't grown martagons, but I have some itsy bitsy seedlings coming along.
Hmmm, and it is said that marts propagate slowly...
thSufferin' thsuccotash, Lilyfan! (drool included)
I've never heard of such a Mad Martagon!
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
Now, you're sure there wasn't a sulky sleeper there too?
A what the heck is that Martagon's moniker?
And you just posted Orange Marmalade (a species cross).
Not unheard of there. OM is supposed to be quite vigorous, like Claude Shride. I've had a three way split on CS.
But what's that other multiplying marvel?
Last fall I planted 2 "Rubrum" lily bulbs. This morning as I surveyed my gardens I saw nothing. Early this evening they were up about 3". I couldn't believe my eyes. I am not familiar with these. They sure must be fast growers!
Oh how lovely! And all I can say is WOW Moby!
moby, that is a mighty increase and I am seeing the same thing all over my yard and even in my pots! This is a pot of asiatics - Latoya I think - no sign of the main stems yet.
lefty, I forgot to mention up above that there is no way there were any 'sleepers' nestled in with those bulbs. Totally new bed that happened because we had to dig out under our house for some repairs and I made lemonade out of the lemon situation.
Good morning everyone, as everyone are watch your lilies to sprout, here is my new lilie bed that I started last Fall. All, or most of my lilies were transplanted from another site, and I'm delighted I've added one single 'Silk Road' to the garden this year. Wooohooo, she too is over a foot tall.

lily fan, do you sink your pots in the ground for the winter?
dalhansonii - a strong possibility, but I just don't know enough about it to say either way.
I didn't get as much mulch on my gardens last fall like I usually do. First up:
Claude Shride
and some miscellaneous bulblets in my nursery bed.
(and others in pots)
lavender, nope, I literally stacked them in the storage area enclosed between the garage and potting house, so I am thinking it is somewhat protected especially from extreme flucutating temps (garage is the north wall and potting house is the south wall) . This was the first time I wintered any over in pots 'outside', most years I put them under the house but it is actually too warm under there and they come out of their winter sleep very early....like mid Feb.
Just got back from the big city having spent the day with 2 of my grandkids and daughter.
Back to the experts! I have 3 Rubrum lily bulbs. 2 are growing fine, the third seems to be growing at quite an angle. Will it straighten up? Or do I need to do something with it to get it to grow more upright instead of so slanted? I know this is probably a silly question, but I have no idea. Thanks,
Becky
Mattsmom, it's not unusual for lily stems to come up in a direction other than upright. I have a few like that myself. I just leave them as they are unless it is going to end up sticking out into a walkway. You don't want to try bending it straight up; the stem will probably break and you will not have bloom this year then. So, my vote is for leaving it be. It adds interest to the garden, right?
Thanks Pard. I'll leave it as is. Did I plant the bulb wrong?
If you planted it with the growing tip up you did it right. Sometimes they wander a bit under the soil before they emerge! That's why we always say to dig wide and deep if you have to move a bulb during the growth cycle.
Kind of funny, a bunch more Buggy bulbs sprouted over night, low of 34 or so. Tonight is suppose to be the coldest for the growing season too.
I've had a lily stem come up on the wrong side of rabbit fencing. So using only my finger, I removed about 2 inches of soil from the top and sides of the stem and gently packed it underneath. Don't force it, and it won't perfectly straight, but it helps.
The safest way to point a wandering stem upward is to force it to grow up, rather than attempting to bend what stem is already produced.
I can hear everyones confusion here . . . . .
Place a heavy brick, board, rock or some other obstruction in front of the wandering stem. As it grows, it will be forced to grow up, and there will be no undue stress on the stem integrity.
I read somewhere recently that a US seller was recommending planting lilies on their side to keep water from accumuulating in the scales. I have never used this method, never had a problem, but I am thinking that doing this would cause stems to grow at an angle as mentioned above. I don't recommend it. Has anyone ever tried this method?
Nope, and no plans to start.
Andrew - they're saying 26 deg. here tonight - OH NO!!!!
It is snowing here! Temp 34. Low for tonight 26 also. YUCK!
Low here last night was 34. I think tonight is another high risk night for frost.
My forcast is saying 25F tonight. I would call that a freeze. Looks like I will be out in the rain trying to pile up some leaves. I just can't do nothing...
After tonight it looks to be in the clear for a while for low temps.
yes, hopefully for 6 months. At least most of my lilies are only a few inches up. The seedling bed will be harder to cover since there are so many coming up.

Yea, they are talking a low of 23 here tonight. Sure hope they don't know what they are talking about.
Many things up, but not too many lilies yet.
Maxine
They are talking 28 here. Maybe I'll dig out all those Dhristmas table clothes that I got and didn't realize you had to iron and cover a few thing... I don't know. I think the Christmas tablecloths would be appropriate since it was just snowing here. :) Seriously, I thought it was a dust storm blowing accross from the fields cause it was so thick, but noooooooo, it was snow... It's gone now.
Yup, we got a little snow here this morning too. Friday evening a tornado went through and then we got a hail storm. The tornado passed over our area - no damage. But the hail (some the size of quarters) did shred some of the foliage in my gardens. I'm still more worried about the cold temps tonight though. I have so much stuff up that there is no way I can cover it.
Buy a blow-up rectangle swimming pool and turn it upside down. ;*)
No way I can cover everything either and it is supposed to get to 30 or less down here.
So much promise showing right now............we'll see what the next few days bring.
