Daily Pictures, Volume 81

Georgetown, TX(Zone 8a)

I'm just a little early starting the new thread, but I'm about to leave for the day, so I didn't want to wait. Here's where we came from: http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/824921/

Our owl is back! I was a little worried that he had decided to find another place since I only saw him that one Sunday. But yesterday he was back in the owl house. My daughter went out to practice her violin on the deck and she said he must have liked her music because he stuck his head out as soon as she started playing.

Here is one of the pics I took last Sunday. He was dozing with the morning sun on his face. The guy at Wild Birds Unlmt said you're supposed to put the house on a large diameter branch, facing East. I guess they like to do this.

Here's another with his ear tufts up. I'm pretty sure he's an Eastern Screech, but correct me if I'm wrong.

Oh, here's a cool owl website I found if you want to learn more about owls:

Oops, posted the same pic twice. Here he is with his tufts up.

I was in the back area stacking lumber when I noticed an America Robin bouncing around about forty feet away. He let me go into the house and get the camera and take some pics. I've been seeing Robins around for a few days, but the weather has been too rotten for photographing them.

from the previous thread:

Quoting:
I am really liking the pics you get with that new camera, rose! Wonder if I could get Santa to bring me one next christmas...lol

DH just broke down and got me a new camera. Guess he got sick of hearing me complain about my lack of zoom and focus issues. :D I'll get it monday. Sure hope I can catch the detail that you all are getting.

Beachwood, NJ(Zone 6b)

What are you getting, Mrs_Ed? I am also shopping for a camera. Its very confusing. GM

The Ozarks, MO(Zone 5b)

Peeper...Thanks for starting the new thread and I love your pics of the owl! I've never seen one in a house before...very cool!

Adel...I feel for our poor Robin's...it is supposed to get cold again!

Way to go Mrs. Ed!! ;0)

I was finally able to get into my files and retrieve some pics I took the other day (for some reason my computer wouldn't let me look at them)!!

Here is a Male Northern Cardinal.

My current camera is not too bad… but has a lot of exposure options, but it is a point and shoot and has limited lens range.

So now I am getting the Pentax K100D super. http://www.pentaxslr.com/bodies/k100super

Why? Well, I have a couple of screw-mount lenses (manual focus) from my old Pentax SLR (film). With just a 40$ adapter, I can use them on this. Pentax is very friendly that way, in my opinion. I can even pick up cheap lenses on ebay or something! And I think it is a huge asset that I can use a manual focus if i want to. This is a 6.1 MP camera; in my opinion, it was not worth the extra bucks to get a few more pixels (10).

If I had not gone the Pentax route, I would have gotten the Nikon D70.

For reviews on most cameras, check out http://www.dpreview.com/. Also, I spent a good deal of time reading the reviews on amazon.com.

Good luck GG!!

Oh I love the owl ... and the birds too..

These are my friends here, Momma and baby.. yesterday she took it to sit in the sun on the fence. I was really close, but don't know how to zoom. I'll try again.. they sit there for a long time and listen to the Josh Groban CD..lol there are other couples making nests in the other trees. A huge roadrunner came by the other day and hopped from limb to limb looking for nests.. I hope he doesn't find the ones closer to the house.

Adel, I NEVER tire of the colors on those Jays of yours. That picture is just great too. Love the glint in the eye!

Marlton, NJ

Nice pics nanny!

Two of my Red-bellieds got into a bit of a fight today and the feathers were flying,or maybe I should say falling!
They were fighting over who was going to the feeder; after the victor ate at the feeder I saw him fly into a tree where the other one was and chase him out of there! Geez!

Whiteside County, IL(Zone 5a)

LOL, and i'm sure you have PLENTY of feeders out for them all! Sheesh!

Marlton, NJ

Actually no I don't.

Theres only 2 seed feeders out since the Starlings and Grackles started coming around and the one has just safflower in it which they (Red-bellieds) don't like.

I might start putting some other seed out and see what happens.

Whiteside County, IL(Zone 5a)

Ah… Well then. Fights ensue.

Peeper, you are so lucky to have a resident owl. I got some pics while outside today, this first shot is a Hawk, pretty far up so the shot is not great.
