Greensboro, AL

Ive emailed also. No response.

Whiteside County, IL(Zone 5a)

Emailed a couple of other places that had it in the past. No word yet.

Downers Grove, IL(Zone 5a)

No word again from Spring Valley. But a friend found a nursery that was willing to order it for us. Although I'm not 100% certain they can really get it. But I'm keeping my fingers crossed just the same!

Greensboro, AL

This is really turning out to be a mystery!

Whiteside County, IL(Zone 5a)

I know! It's really wierd.

Judsonia, AR(Zone 7b)

I went to a nursery in Jackson this past saturday found a black basil. It looked alot like the african blue but with really tiny leaves. I think it was just small. The lady that owns this nursery really knows her stuff. and she also sold the african blue basil and a variegated basil, I bought the black basil and the variegated basil. I should have asked her about the black basil, I guess I can email her and ask her.

Greensboro, AL

I bet there are so many wonderful basils that we haven't even heard of yet!

Judsonia, AR(Zone 7b)

I can just imagine LOL

I'd like to find that real tall basil that you can only grow from cuttings, I forget the name I htink it's the greek column basil

Greensboro, AL

Greek Column Basil.

Its right here in Plant Files. 3 vendors listed.

I just got (2) the Greek Column Basil from Pantry Herb Gardens. I know one thing, the slugs love it. One of them was de-leaved immediately!

Greensboro, AL

What about the African Blue, black basil, and varigated basil that Kathy Ann mentions.

Any sources for those?

Judsonia, AR(Zone 7b)

i've seen the variegated and african at several herb sources, I forget, I think maybe well sweep and may be papa geno's I think they even have the greek column basil

Washougal, WA(Zone 6b)

So much for finding chocolate basil! Dang, I came here looking for solutions!

I planted it in containers about two years back, when it was out at Fred Meyer's here in the Portland OR area. Planted it with miscanthus and some sweet potato vine.... forget what else. They were gorgeous containers - a huge hit with the neighbors.

Haven't been able to find it since.

KC Metro area, MO(Zone 6a)

We will have all kinds of basil at our plant sale this weekend but still no chocolate basil. Unless they snuck it in. lol.

No. San Diego Co., CA(Zone 10b)

I heard back from a lady in WA who wrote about it on her blog. She got it from her CSA at the time http://rootllc.com/
They don't have an email address on their site and I haven't gotten around to contacting them.

I've been following this thread since the beginning....each time I see this thread on the front page, I think....yes, yes they found it...my fingers are crossed, I've been keeping a lookout also at the sales I've been to and the swapmeets.....no luck so far.

Greensboro, AL

Well maybe it will still show up. Sometimes things happen just when you've given up hope.

Central Valley, CA(Zone 9b)

Holy moly, if I ever do find choco-basil, I'm taking it and heading for the hills! (JK, -like I wouldn't share!)
Anyway, I'm beginning to wonder if perhaps the term "chocolate" refers to a brownish-red color, not uncommon in some basils, rather than to the flavor of this variety...

Rankin, IL(Zone 5a)

cyra... your gonna get lynced before the day is out making this thread pop up.. everyones heart is going to jump out of their chest thinking someone found the chocolate basil... LOL

Greensboro, AL

the chocolate basil that I had did have a brownish streak running through the stem. It tasted like basil with a hint of sweet sweet chocolate.

Central Valley, CA(Zone 9b)

Pssst, Frans530......your post, (and gloria125's post) are after mine, tee-hee! If I get lynched, at least I'll have company....:O

Greensboro, AL

That would be something to put on your tombstone: lynched for the lust of chocolate basil!

Maybe someone would think to plant my grave with chocolate basil when it is found!

Maybe with an edging of queen sophia marigolds?

cyra, in all of our Googling, we found many reports that it DID smell and taste like chocolate. It's so very odd that it has disappeared.

I want some! I've been watching this thread since the start. I even emailed a lady that posted a blurb about it two years ago online and was waiting to see if her's had survived the winter so I could get a little to root. My basils are all hanging on for dear life, I think I have finally found a place that they life to grow - perfect time for chocolate to join the family!

Greensboro, AL

If we find it we need to find some one who will propagate it and keep it going!

Downers Grove, IL(Zone 5a)

PLEASE - give me the name of that nursery in Wasco. I will drive out Monday and get some for everyone!!!

Whiteside County, IL(Zone 5a)

it was posted as follows:

Gardenglory - I emailed her, too! Chatnoir, be careful about those kinds of statements! lol Find out who the grower is and we can do a co-op!

Greensboro, AL

O.K. Using reverse find, apparently there is a mistake in the phone number. 4424 instead of 4434

oops, that number appears to be the illinois youth center.

http://www.wasconursery.com/contact.html

correct number is …4424.

I called and left a message.

Mrs. Ed:

Okay, well, I talked to someone and they DO. Yes, DO have it and it is NOT chocolate MINT. They have about 1/2 dozen plants. The greenhouse manager (Martha) is going to call me back and see if she can get more from their grower. I probably won't hear from her until Monday.

I'm sorry to say that I have no idea how to do a coop though. I'll have to read up on it.

I'll be anxious to hear from the grower to get info for DG writers to do a story.

Greensboro, AL

If you get it, Mrs Ed, I think you should do the story. It is a real coop!

But . . . . if you write about it, then we have to get enough for everybody.

Maybe the grower would be up for that.
