JACKPOT!!!
Oh shoot… wish it were before the roundup so you could bring me one.
chocolate basil - does anyone have a source?
LOL. I can mail it to you.
Whoopee! I can rest my eyes tonight. :-) Bless you, Pepper23.
Meanwhile, I have found several new plant sources very near me, so it was a good exercise.
Glad to hear that. I am still gonna find out our source at work. That way I can pass it on to you guys.
Well, I'm glad to hear it was not declared a hazard or something crazy like that!!
I"ve been out, what? we don't have chocolate basil yet. eye yi yi, I smell chocolate .......
Yea, pepper! ☺
Pepper! If you are willing to ship, let me know what you want in trade! Okay, now just that little twitch under my eye remains....
Pepper, If you manage to find it you can count me in!
Now we just have to be patient...
Who's writing the story?
Shall we start a list?
What do you need us to do, Pepper?
Shall we send one to the nursery that said it didn't exist? he he he
To write a story I need to know who grew it and how. Lots of pictures.
Recipes. How did you use it. What are the plans to save it over for next year? Seeds for other dg members?. Will it come true from seed?
Hip-hip hooray for Pepper!!!
Oh, can you imagine if I had the chance to bring Tom DeBaggio a new basil? His may or may not recognize its significance, depending on how he's doing that day (he has Alzheimer's), but I will know it, and his son would just love it, I think. I'm glad you might be willing to ship, trade, whatever... Pepper, you are a gem!
"Will it come true from seed?" is a good question. I had a Greek Basil a couple of years ago that I didn't think was any sort of hybrid, and I carefully isolated the pair of plants for seed saving... big disappointment. Next generation was almost flavorless. If I can get my hands on a couple of plants, I'll save seeds and grow some out right away to see how they do.
Yes Critter, I've been wondering if there is a reason that seed is not available.
It could just be a question of availability & whether or not anybody is growing it... until recently, I was one of the few sources around as far as I could find for Lime Basil (I saved seeds from a couple of plants I bought from Tom years back).
No kidding!! I found it from Scheepers catalog. But yah, not until recent. That's so cool.
*~rats~* Yet another thing I never heard of before and now cannot live without!
hee hee. join the club.
Lime Basil is at Walmart in the Burpee seed rack.
yah, I saw that last year too. It's so yummy.
Chat, Dmail me and LMK if you can't find it. I think I've still got a packet of mixed lemon & lime basil seeds. (Labels got lost while they were drying -- they're quite distinctly different as plants, but seeds & chaff are harder to distinguish in terms of scent, so I just combined them for a mix! I was amused to see somebody was marketing a similar mix on the seed rack, not sure if it was Burpee or another company... LOL.)
BASIL Espionage!!!
I just wondered if they'd had a similar mix-up, or if that was a deliberate marketing ploy to combine the two varieties in one packet...
hmmm, good question. well do they call it "7up" mix? lol
I wasn't able to talk to our director today to find out the source but I will try again on Monday. Hopefully the company has some still in stock and if we are extremely lucky maybe even enough for a co-op. But it depends on what kind of company it is. I will let you all know as soon as I talk to him. :~)
We know you'll do what you can -- and we sure do appreciate it! Even if you can just managed to get a couple of plants for yourself, you can try saving seeds, and hopefully it'll come true... I think it might, as I haven't seen any mention of its being a hybrid in all this info-searching that we've been doing.
Well critter, If I get a plant, the first seeds are going to you for your "mad basil laboratory testing."
Probably what will happen (now that we've all been through this Chocolate stress) is that Home Depot and everyone in the world will have a huge amount of this available. LOL>
I checked today... didn't see any... but I did get 4 lovely little mini rhodi's (1 gal, but nice shape to them) for $7 each, and some stuffed pots of creeping phlox were going for 4/$10, so I picked up 3 of those as well... Consolation prizes!
We grew Mrs. Burns Lemon Basil last year and were very pleased at how good it was and how vigorous. The cinnamon basil was also fabulous. I noticed the Japanese Beetles really liked the Genovese basil, but pretty much left the cinnamon basil alone.
Mrs. Ed.
Everyone in the world with chocolate basil!
That sounds like a fine goal to me! Maybe we could breed some "peace" genes in it, and accomplish World peace!
:D. what the world needs now, is chocolate basil, sweet chocolate basil.
Everybody sing!
I'll sing with you!
:-D
You know a long time ago, our leader Dave actually posted in some threads on DG. As I remember he had a lure for Japanese beetles - - - 4 oclocks. I think you plant them AWAY from what you want to protect.
So maybe a 4 O'clock border would entertain the J. beetles and protect the basil patch from damage.
da da da da da
[I don't have musical notes on my keyboard.]
My most successful "lure" has been Spicy Globe basil. It doesn't grow as compactly from seed (at least not the seeds I've found) as the plants that I've purchased do, but it is the JB's absolute favorite basil. I spray it all over with Sevin, the JB's eat it, and they die by the bushel (almost literally, ewww). Obviously, I don't eat it after it's been sprayed with poison. I know the Sevin is also bad for any honeybee or good bug visiting the basil, but once the JB's appear, they generally swarm over the Spicy Globe so much that most other bugs don't get a crack at it anyway.
I love the flavor of Spicy Globe. Id have to make sure the deadly ones were away from the one's I planned to eat!
Viola!! Found them!! They do mostly wholesale so you would have to do a co-op.
It is Spring Valley Nursery in Paola,KS. Alan, our hort director speaks highly of Judy and Ken.

You Rock again Pepper!!! Thanks for the help. Who knows how to do a co-op??
I don't know if they will do a co-op. Someone might want to email them and find out if they are willing. I am looking online for some other places just in case. :~)
I know someone mentioned wanting some other basils also. Here is a link to the Herb Cottage and they have a few other basils. Not chocolate though. There are 7 basils there in the list. :~)
I guess it helps to give a link. lol www.theherbcottage.com/seeds.html
