and perched. He's kinda lazy, lol.
CLOSED: Identify This Bird Please - Volume 7
And this was when he snuck up on me. I was standing still leaning against a post, focussed on the feeder, waiting for him (he tends to fly off if he sees me move, but if I'm still he'll come close) when I heard him at the hanging basket on the post right next to me. Then he went down to the ground to sip nectar from the salvia in the bed, then he went for these red verbena before I even had a chance to plant them!
Holy Moly!!!!! Thank you! Another new one for me!!
You are on a roll Nanny!!! Congratulations!
I'm leaving the hummer id to the experts PeeperKeeper but I think it is very unfair that I haven't seen one yet this year! :-)
nanny, that is exciting to have the Eastern Phoebe. Sorry I didn't say anything in my other posts. I was concentrating on making sure I put the right pics up of the hummer, but I'm excited for you! I also saw one of them for the first time on my camping trip, but didn't know what it was until Resin told me, lol.
I believe this is a Black Chinned Hummer ... and perched. He's kinda lazy
Yep, Black-chinned. The perched pic confirms it, you can see the wing shape, with a broad, rounded and slightly curved tip.
Resin
Congratulations Peeper!!
Pepper no need to apologize or make a comment! lol
Female House Sparrow. Does look like it has a damaged foot.
Resin
Thanks Resin...I usually know them but for some reason this one threw me.
Alert, alert. I have a new bird. She flew off too quick for me to get an ID.
Looks like a female house finch, but with sort of mottled orange/gold coloring (not yellow).
Thoughts???
Yep, yellow variant male House Finch
Resin
Hi, Its a Dark-eyed Junco
First time I was one that I noticed.
Thanks Pelle.
Yep; Great Blue Heron

Can you please help me with this first sighting for me?
I was thinking Pine Siskin but when I read, in Sibley's, the length of 5 inches I wasn't so sure anymore. I don't give as much weight to bird length as other determiners but this bird was bigger than a house sparrow. I am sure because there were some in the tree at the same time. Please note the hint of red on the face.
Taken through my kitchen window about a half hour ago.
Thanks so much for your help.
That's a female red-winged blackbird - definitely larger than a siskin. I just started hearing and seeing them around here again a couple weeks ago.
Thank you claypa! A first for me at home! I've spotted the males as we drive through the mountains but have never seen one near my home before.
Does anyone know if there is any kind of guide that helps you identify hawks from underneath (as you typically see them flying overhead and not perched!!)
I don't know if there is a guide but there is a website.

RESIN-ATOR KILLS AGAIN!
So many victims... from Plant ID to Bird ID...so many victims.
JK! (
I just come here to look... couldn't tell a Melanerpes from an Egretta if my life depended on it
Mrs_Ed.........Do you think she made it from your place to mine in five days?.........I missed your post somehow or I would have known what she was.
Shan71, that's definitely a mockingbird
Adel, hmmmmm, you know I have NOT seen my little yellow variant friend in several days!!
Thanks Claypa. That's a first for my yard. Do you think it is a young one? Is that why it looks different to me?
Rose, I think that's what I've identified at my place as a Field Sparrow. I think they're really cute, the pink bill was the identifier for me, along with the white eye-ring. If you've got an I.D. book, check it out and see what you think.
I think you are right Sadie! I had checked my Stokes book but the color was wrong but after checking the Audubon Handbook it looks just like a Field Sparrow. He had such a lovely song...that is why I noticed him. Thanks for your help...that makes 2 new birds for me today! Also got some pics of the Eastern Towhee!! Yippee!! Does the fun never end?!!! LOL!
