Botulism symptoms in my chicks

Johnson City, TX(Zone 8b)

Fluff away, TF! So happy all are geting healthy chicks hatching.
I hope they stay that way.

A forum exists only by it's member base. The free exchange
of information is critical to help disseminate current health
issues of our birds. Hatcheries should swallow their libelous
pride, and take it for the good of all, even if it means they get
a temporary black eye.

I am sorry you had to do the good and right thing, Maine.
I also was faced with that, and did what needed to be done.
Hopefully, I will hear back from McM on the final numbers
of my losses. So far I have not. I lost 1/3 of my birds from
them, and they need to figure out how to do the right thing.

Best of luck to all of you, and best of health to your chicks.

Johnson City, TX(Zone 8b)

Hi Granny, how are ya?
I put my chicks hatched here on the 20th in with my
chicks from McM hatched on the 9th. Of course, after all
the sick chicks were gone already, and I kept up with the
disinfecting of the brooders. My home hatched were very
vigorous, and stood up for themselves very well during the
initial introductions. I also think, but I haven't done it yet, that
as long as they are only a couple weeks apart in age, it matters
less that couple of weeks, the bigger they get.
I can see it now: "Heyyyy, who are you?" I'm so and so, and
I only wiegh a few ounces less, so don't bother me!" hahaha.

Luther, MI(Zone 4b)

Joni, I could put a divider (with chick wire) between the two for a day or two, but if I order the day mine hatch, it would probably be only a few days till I got the others.

TSC won't get theirs till April 13th, and mine will be two weeks old by then, so I don't know if that would work, but if I send for them, it would only be a few days. So, of course, I would probably order.

BTW, what happened to princess cathy? You goofed, maybe?

Johnson City, TX(Zone 8b)

Nope, didn't forget the dear princess. the game is on hold
till some issues are worked out. not a problem.

I have read that several put wire dividers in until the others
knew they belonged. I will probably hatch more with a bigger
gap in between hatching age, so will watch them closely to
make sure they are getting food and water. I noticed with
my polish, who are smaller, that they didn't want to come out
of the box to forage much, and they waited until the bigger
chicks ate and drank, then came out as a group to the feeder.
All is well with them, but I can see how smaller ones would
be on the outskirts of the mayhem, and I would just die if any
weren't getting enough to eat.

Maine: I looked at BYC and read about the AE and the
'suspect' hatchery. What do you think I should do with the
rest of my chicks from MM? I lost some of all 3 breeds,
Polish Crested, Ameraucana and Cochins, all standard.
My highest mortality was in the cochins. Several of the cochins
that did not show symptoms are small and what I thought
was just 'petite' I can now say, are not thrifty. They forage,
eat, all that, but are smaller than the others. My remaining
polish are all healthy looking. The amer's are doing the best,
being vigorous and with good size. Do you know if these
remaining can be vaccinated against AE? Are they going to
pass the AE or immuntity to their chicks?

Howdy y'all - sorry been away.
Congrats Silkie on the babes o' many colors..LOL..I can't tell yet what the adult colors will be with mine, but looks like you have all different than mine, COOL can you say SWAP?
Truest, if your chicks don't look sick, they probably had immunity natural or hereditary. Just keep an eye on em and let it ride. I think I got all my sick ones out. Even if some are infected but not showing signs, my bet is that they will thrive in the future, and be stronger for it. Take my advice "cum grano salis" as I just go with my gut on this one. If it ain't broke don't fix it - my motto.

That whole BYC thing was ridiculous - inexcusable disrespect of a moderator? gimme a break. All I said was that people were looking too deeply for the answer that was right in front of them, then msprissy (mod) stated that I was irresponsible to not have my chicks tested and started putting words in my mouth, when it was in plain black and white in my post above her post, and I did not say any such things. I went on to explain that a moderators job was to moderate, not insult, and then put words in my mouth. Then I crossed the line, a weeee bit, I told her she can't just inject her venom wherever she chooses. WOW - she didn't like that, but I sure did..LOL..LOL..I never was very good in the sandbox. I can't believe the pm's I got from all sorts of people that wanted to say that to her, but didn't want to jeopardize their privileges.

You people are real people here. I don't like the kiss-ups on the other site that are always backing up the mods, and leaving posts to defend them every time they cut down a forum member. It's not right. Enough on that.

Reynoldsville, PA(Zone 6a)

rotfl, i'd of done the same thing she has beed the one most disrespectful blaiming all the victums and snapping on them from what i have seen replied. most of the ones i saw she was starting up things not anyone that was a member they were all calm and cool trying to get to the trueth and how to save their babies. u got baned for questioning her authority in public forum then cause u didnt take it to pm, yet had ya done that it would have been for something else so ya can't win. something she doesn't realize more than likely they all have AE or most of them that is a highly contagous virus. not everyone needs to test for it. it is all the same sypmtoms and probs and if so many test with same results then that should be good enough to assure there was an outbreak. testing a few thousand birds is not nessisary u only need a portion of them tested.

i think someone here hit it right on the head only mods r backing the hatcheries but why? cause it is their sponsors. they loose them and nomore byc. instead of protecting members they are ignoreing pleas for help and not giveing advice how to save them or quarenteen and from what i saw that is where the second prob is.

i have about 24 seramas now and 1 silkie from my bcy swap. i'll take better pics soon as i can. that is to kool!!! yep i can't wait for them all to grow up so we can swap eggs it will be loads of fun!!!

ROFLMAO
i have been lurking in this thead
I don't have chickens yet but will soon. Maybe by fall or next spring.
Good for you Scott. To bad the other have no back bone, it might have made a differnence in her if she got complaints by higher numbers ?

iam learning alot from this thread thanks

OK! hugs!

meanwhile, i discovered [while searching for info] that you can purchase vaccines for AE, aka AEV, aka "Crazy Chicken Disease", from none other than.... MURRAY MCMURRAY HATCHERY!

Maybe that is what folks should spend their credits on!

Someone [maybe tammy] asked on one of the threads why you would want to destroy birds that survived. i believe one reason is they would pass it on to their chicks through the eggs. so, can you GUARANTEE that at NO point in it's life will this hen's egg end up in an incubator or under a broody hen?

the losses are traumatically enormous. but this virus needs to be stopped, dead in it's tracks...

Reynoldsville, PA(Zone 6a)

as i understood it, the breeder hens come in contact with it, then there is a 10 day incubation time if that hen lays during that 10 days it will pass to the chick in those eggs laid during that 10 days. then the moms will pass the antibodies on from it not the virus after the first 10 days.

the babies born with it will plain and simple not be effected if somehow they have immunity, others will have symptoms and die and others will have symptoms and make it. those who do and make it will be stunted growth and require mass feed to try to keep them up to the others which they never will fully grow to thrive or be to their full potential. the eggs from these babies will pass on antibodies. from what i read any with symptoms were to be killed and incinerated to get rid of the virus while it was in it's prime and to save them the long, hard drag out death and save the rest of the flock.

basically u gotta play mother nature and humainly end suffering to save the flocks or survival of the fittest only the healthy should be spared. trust me i know it is very hard when my flock had ilt and ib i had to do the same. between what died and what i put down i lost 7 and saved 100+. now every year i vaccinate them, the entire flock. soon as my last hatches hit 4 weeks old i will be revaccinateing them and getting ready for show season again.

i always use biosecurity with my flock if i sell or someone wants to see them i meet them somewhere else, i don't let anyone on the property, ya can't be to safe. if i go to someones flocks i wear biosuits. i do not go to more than one farm in a day and totally change clothes ect. we use hand sanitizer all the time and quarenteen for 30 days ect.

it was one of the hardest choices i had to make, was it hard, u bet, was it heartbreaking, yes it was i shed tears even now sometimes. i lost exhibitions and pets but i did what i had to do to save all them babies. if i had to do it again would i? in a heart beat, i know in my heart i did a mercy killing to save hundreds and the first to go was my favorite silkie roo, i cried for days. i lost some but i saved so many and i will never make that mistake again. every year i will vaccinate for my flock because if i don't protect them noone else will. i feel as a responsible mom and breeder it is my job to get the vaccines, vaccinate and to do anything i can to protect them.

my prob was the breeder i got them from only vaccinated ones he was keeping shortly before i bought mine from him. the vaccines were live shedding viruses. he didn't tell me and mine got the sheds before they came to me. after i got them in what i found to be rescue situations which totaly po'ed me and totally cleaned and changed their lives that they were so used to. the stress and everything changeing caused a breakout and deaths. nycropysies showed partial antibodies and that they had had the virus mths before i got them. so once they did in a 3 day span it all hit at once. let me tell ya i feel for all of u it was a nightmare!!!

as an added thought we helped ours fight off secondary infections with antibiotics till they had time to build antibodies. that is something that may help save some lives also. they may have it and be really weekened and secondary infections could be what is helping kill them. i'd get antibiotics into them u may not loose as many if u are wanting to save them. however if it was me personally i'd be culling anyone that showed signs of it, starting with the worst ones. i say that because if it will stunt growth and cause probs with productions later. honestly is is worth saveing them for them to still be unhealthy later??
