Cow Pot Co-Op - how did they do?

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

there is a lot of wasted tape.... really annoys me too... I think I am going to write them a letter.... the mini blinds that's what wore off for me last year... but now that I have the labeler I might go back to that in the future... I was just so sick last year because I had 6 types of snapdragons and I really wanted to plant them how I planned .... there were only a few blooming at planting time... i was really sick over the whole thing

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Could you try golf tees? They come in mixed colors in a bag so it's up to you to decide that blue means one snapdragon, yellow for another, white, green, etc.

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

I am going to stick to the expensive wasteful label maker this year... at least i know what is what at plating time... will worry about it again next winter

:)

but the different color tags are a great idea too

Leesburg, FL(Zone 9b)

onewish -- i think they do a Co-Op for those types of labelers.

Suzy -- i too have the Eon Markers
I have them in my garden for marking the plant ... i also got the vinyl labels and used the UV spray.
they withstood the first winter... we shall see how long they last. I sprayed mine Green though.

At least I still have about 6 or more weeks til i'll be planting out... so i've got some time to get it figured out.

Suzy -- can you take a photo of your lil yogurt cup clippings so i can see how you do that?

Greensboro, NC(Zone 7a)

I have some of the Eon markers that I make labels on those sheets (had a little co-op for them last year) that hold up OK so far. The ones that I placed a color photo on faded a bit but the black print part is doing OK. I also use a garden marker to write on the back of the plate in case the front fades from sun and water.

I also purchased these little aluminum ID tags with metal twist ties that are soft so you just imprint by writing on them or as their description says "emboss". I use those for iris, attach the twist tie to one of those U shaped garden fabric pins and push it into the ground near the iris rhizomes. I got the tags from Mountain Valley Growers and the pins from walmart but any garden center should have them.

onewish1 thanks for the links. I went ahead and bought a cheap labeler at wally world yesterday, it is aweful , No way would i want to punch down hard to make tags for all the plants I have. It hurt my hand just typing my name and it didn't punch down right. Have to step on it to make it press.

So I'm going ot look into what your using, it looks like it might be a lot easier to use. I don't want to jack up my green thumbs on what I bought yesterday. I should have waited : (.

thanks again

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

Tcs... thanks I will look into the co-op

Greenville, IN(Zone 6a)

I write on the back of the eon markers who the plant was from, well some of them are that way but I intend to do them all like that this year. Those paint pens I used last year looks like I just wrote on the markers this year so they are going to be keepers, I use them on my jugs too kind of a waste but they last. Well worth the money!

Leesburg, FL(Zone 9b)

SO far i only use the Eon Markers for my Hostas.

I add the name [obviously]
where i got it from [a kind person or what nursery]
and the year it was planted

It's gonna be tough trying to mark the plants that i plant out this year because my neighbors dog tromps thru everything.
I wish they would control him a bit -- and I'm gonna be super pissed if my Clematis does not come back this year from him peeing on it all winter long.

The dog is a lovable lunk [choc lab] but the neighbors -- even though i like them ... they are the kind that should have gold fish, and not much more.

If i used good markers back there -- he'd end up smashing them all.

Just wanted to let you all know incase anyone wants more cow pots, I just talked to Roger and ordered the same deal as 9kittymom on the 3" pots 200 3" for $70 and a case of the 4" and asked Roger how much longer he was going to do this deal and he said as long as he has to he will do it :) Such a nice guy!

Hello all!! Trying to read up on all the winter sowing particulars here and on WS thread (better late then never- I'll be somewhat educated by next year) - has anyone thought to do a co-op with those bags? http://www.uline.com/ProductDetail.asp?model=S-8445&ref=160
I'd almost be tempted to do one....those bags seem perfect but I certainly wouldn't have a need for 1,000 - yikes!!!

Just in case there would be enough of us interested: http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/829143/

Cave Creek, AZ

Has anyone seen 2 inch cow pots?
Mickey

Greenville, IN(Zone 6a)

Mickey, there is a picture somewhere on the cow pot thread, I ordered some I'm planting a few morning glories and figured these would be good to plant them in, they aren't suppose to be as big as the reg. 3" pots but closer to the 2" pots which I figure will be a lot better to plant the mg's and little seedlings in and make them happy too this way I can put plant and all in the ground without disturbing the roots on the ones that are so picky :)

Bartlesville, OK(Zone 6a)

well, that's a GOOD IDEA. Where can we get those???

Susan
=^..^=

Greenville, IN(Zone 6a)

Susan if you are talking abut the 2" pots they are the same as the ones we ordered for the three inch but they do look a little bigger than I thought they would be but still I'm going to plant my morning glories in them, I just wish they didn't have that rim around them. I figured they would be a little smaller hearing everyone talk about them. I just looked at them again and they will be good to do MG's in :)

New York & Terrell, TX(Zone 8b)

Quoting:
I just wish they didn't have that rim around them.

I usually take pots like that & moisten the the rim; then clip the corners open & use a stapler to reclose them after I mush them upwards with my hands. Maybe you can do that?

just a thought...

Bartlesville, OK(Zone 6a)

does Roger sell the 2" ones too?
=^..^=

Greenville, IN(Zone 6a)

9kitty, they were just talking about the 3" pots looking more like the two inch pots so I think they are calling them 2" pots but I'm sastified with my 3" pots they aren't that small I don't think, they are a little smaller than the reg. plastic pots though don't you think?

NatureWalker, great idea that's what I need to do, thank you!

onewish, everything looks great to me! you have a definite green thumb.

I still need to order my 3" case. I hope he's still taking orders.

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

I placed a second order too... and the 200 3" are 1/2 way gone already.... I asked if he would do this again for us next year and he said all we have to do is ask

Circle Pines, MN(Zone 4b)

LOL - you use the same propagators I do! I guess I need to get downstairs and take some photos too... of course, being in zone 4 my stuff isn't nearly as tall as yours! I like the quality of the Lee better, but they have gone up in price SOOO much since last year I ended up getting more from Gardener's supply. I don't care for the capillary matting that comes with it, but I got a couple rolls from somewhere else and it works just fine.

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

I try everything.... but i do like the lees also... just going to change my mix next year... a bit on the wet side this year... that's what i get for not following the directions

Greenville, IN(Zone 6a)

onewish, sometimes those lupines don't like to be in pots, that's what I have found anyway soon as you can get them in the ground:) I had some to sow put them up so I could do them the next day and still haven't found them and that was back when you first showed pictures of your lupines lol

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

hate it when that happens...hope you find em

Greenville, IN(Zone 6a)

It's almost too late to plant them I think, they don't like the heat, there is always next year, famous last words lol Thanks for the good wishes lol

McGregor, IA(Zone 4b)

OK, what are cow pots? Are they related to cow pies?

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)
