Isabella is having her biggest flush to date. Now, when you look at the picture just imagine that you are looking at one side of the plant. The other half is on the inside of my yard. Isabella is one of the easiest brugs to grow and is a constant bloomer (just not usually this heavy). For those people who are looking for a great starter brug, Isabella should definitely be considered.....and yes she is very fragrant too! Just ask my bees!

JT Isabella has to be the most neglected brug in my yard, I think she just wants to be loved. I have been using the new miracle grow formulation (hose end spraying) since they revised it a while ago. That, with a sprinkling of rose food pellets that have minors in it. I never actually give anything to Isabella specifically. She just gets the benefit of the others being hosed down with the stuff. She is too big to waste Forbid or Avid on so she grows pretty much au natural. She seems to be doing just fine this way so I won't be changing anything anytime soon. LOL!!

next time I pass around Ft,L if you see somebody looking around your garden- it might be me! but I never pinch bits without asking first! It is absolutely lovely, I only have one yellow brug that I have grown from seed and I am very pleased with the results - 3 lots of blooms so far, not quite one year old - 3 ft high and spreading nicely. I just got another on ebay and am awaiting it's arrival - haven't told DH yet!
I can't wait for Dave's auction to start, I hope there are sellers selling Brugs.

Wow, Gary! She is gorgeous!!! I had just about decided that I didn't like the shade of the suave flowers, but large numbers, you don't notice the necks at all. If she can handle broadmites, she's worth a try.

Most of the larger Brug nurseries will be at Dave's auction. They are already members of Dave's garden and are the most reputable you will find.
Isabella just never lets us down. We have an Iseabella planted in the ground in the back of the house and she always makes a statement. This year I have a cutting that I cut above the Y, that I will plant where she can get a little more sun and she how she likes it.

I hope you can share some advice. I have an unnamed pink variety that's very prolific. My problem is that I want it to grow 10 feet tall, so I can walk under it, but it wants to grow 10 feet wide. I've tried staking it, but in wet weather the stakes bend right over in the soft soil. Should I cut off the new growth near the bottom? Does it vary by variety? I love how full it gets, and the fuller it is, the more blooms it has, so maybe I should give up on wanting a tree and embrace my 10 foot wide bush?
Really great photos of Isabella. The aphids all seem to Love my Isabella baby. It is practically thier favorite brug! Do they like yours as well? Yours looks heathy to me..

Elphaba it might be too late to train an umbrella out of your plant why not train a cutting off the mother tree ...they grow so readily. Just pinch the sideshoots off as they grow allowing only the top growth ...I train mine like that and like you want to walk or sit under them.

Thanks Chrissy! I was walking around the neighborhood yesterday and saw several brugs and all were trees unlike mine! I was so jealous. Thanks for letting me know how to do it. I rooted some for a friend, so I'll tell her too.
Standards are nice, no doubt about it! However, what could possibly beat a lush bush just chock full of blooms like the picture that heads this thread! LOL I've got to have both in my yard!

Oh yes just got to have it all that is for sure! ...my big thrill is to sit under a canopy of Angel bells at dusk or early morn ...looking upwards into their faces as they exhale their heavenly breath down all over me ...no price on such an experience! or the sight of a fully dressed Angel tree in all their elegant glory *sighing*

I remember reading that some species hybrids have thicker trunks than others. Charles Grimaldi and Dr. Seuss are two examples that immediately come to mind. Over time standards will thicken. If you want the tallest trunk possible, you need to let a shoot that emerges from the ground grow, while still attached to the mother plant, until it "Y"s. Get rid of all other side shoots that sprout and maybe many of the other branches to remove competition for food. This ground shoot will grow straight up and can get up to 7 feet tall. One of these links shows how to root a tall cutting. The other links have hints on getting more upward growth.

Isabella is my first love and not even MEM could change my mind. Now don't get me wrong I love MEM (can't spell her name though) but first love is the best love or so they say.
