did you see there are TWO! One is on the burl
DAILY PICS VOLUME #78
I saw two...that is a cool pic.
Yep, saw them both. The one on the burl is the one I meant was looking around. I guess I should have he should be looking up!
Great picture.
Thats really neat!!
I am in awe of the great bird pictures here.
I don't have any new bird pictures, but I did take this one yesterday.
This is a live white pine. It had some pecking on it last year and a porcupine was chewing around the bottom.
But it looks like recently somebody has really been working hard on this one. My guess piliated woodpeckers.
The size of the holes are about 10" tall or more.
Wow thats alot of work!
Wow that is. Maybe you'll have some little babies!
We have quite a few woodpeckers here. I have to say the pileated is my favorite though.
I have never seen a pileated nest, but have seen fledlings in the woods with parents.
We are lucky to have several in our area.
Your favorite forum page????
Well, when I would click on communities, it would come up with all my favorite forums. It would say whether someone has posted to it, etc. Now I have to find them all.
creekwalker, if you click the link at the top of a Forum which says 'add this forum to my favourites' or whatever it says, each thread you watch or post to (which makes it watched) will come up on your Home page.
They are huge holes cparts, must be plenty of woodpeckers around to nest in those!
cpartschick, wonder how on earth that pine tree is surviving all of those "alterations".
My neighbor told me yesterday that she saw a pileated woodpecker out behind their place. I'll have to take a look, not as though I'll ever get to see it though. Bet it would appear if I went back into that woods without my camera! Yepper! And that is not going to happen!
I have been working with picasa trying to get my pics to a better size for viewing. Here's some white-breasted nuthatches. They seem to be moving into this nestbox. They were watching a snake (rat snake, I think) that was on the ground near by. It went on down the hill to the creek. This is my first resize/crop attempt. Sorry about the shadows, but it was the first I saw both birds at the house.
When I was out walking in the woods this morning I saw another pine with about the same size holes from last year and it is still alive.
Trees do not always make it. Between the porcupines, beaver, woodpeckers and wood larvas or other bugs, we have a steady source of wood for our woodstove.
Our trees around our birdfeeders are torn to shreads from the woodpeckers.
beclu727, that nuthatch that is hanging upside down is soooo funny, resembles a bat!
cpartschick, some of my trees are pretty chewed up by woodpeckers, too. But, who cares. My neighbor had to replace the trim on his garage door last year due to woodpecker damage.
I have a huge hole to repair in the back of my house, but I am going to wait until Spring passes.
Oh I agree. I love seeing the woodpeckers!
They are worth it.
wow cparts...that is a lot of holes! My neighbors apple tree looks similar and they never noticed it!! Someone will have a nice cavity nest!
Beclu that pic of the WBNuthatch is a riot!! I love it!
CW...good to see you again stranger! I love the House Finches...they seem so polite at the feeders unlike the Goldfinches who have turned into real terrors!!
Here's a Common Grackle I took late yesterday...no new pics yet for today.
Sorry about your gloom. We have gotten above, yes above, freezing every day this week. It is starting to melt the snow, a little at a time. This is good, too warm too quick causes problems.
Thought I would add the picture of what below the tree looked like. This is what cued me to the holes above, as they were on the other side of the tree.
Anyone need any woodchips?
Holy Cow!!
Holy smokes! Those guys make great kindling starter!
Nice pics CW, good to see you again!
Beclu, Thats a funny Nuthatch pic!
Nice Grackle pic Rose! Love the Stellers adel!
Wow to the woodchips!!
Spring has returned to Northern Florida. How do I know? I just walked outside and saw the first Swallow Tail Kite of the season. A pair nest in the park near my house.
How 'bout these duckies… Resin or someone, want to chime in on their ID? I was thinking Mallard, but there are some with green heads and some with purple/blue.
Yep, Mallards. The gloss on the head varies in colour depending on the angle of the light on it.
Resin
Great shots everybody.
