I'm still trying to figure out a way to meet her. It's a pretty good piece tho. I've been wanting to go to Leu Gardens over in Orlando. How far is it from Melborne to Orlando, I wonder?

Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5b)

It's 50 miles on 528. LOL!

Not sure about Leu Gardens, but we're going to Lou's Blues in Orlando one night :)) Possibly Tuesday, but more likely Sat night :((

Let me d-mailyou my schedule just oin case you can work somehting out.

Lea, I don't know, but i'll probably be worried about my seedlings....not too worried to have fun, but worried enough to call home several times a day with reminders.

Ok, : )

Greenville, IN(Zone 6a)

I'll keep my fingers crossed for you Suzy :) And I hope you and Lucy get to hook up! :)

Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5b)

Wouldn't that be fun??? Lucy, if we do, I want an orange!!!

There is a place real close to Melbourne where Lucy might want to go for butterfly plants

Maple Street Natives. eckygardener told me about it because my friend lives on (her property backs up to) a nature preserve/swamp.

Lucy, way to got on the Mt.Laurel, what a pretty baby! If I ever mention sowing seed you're interested in, be sure to let me know; unless its some newly purchased goody, I'm likely to have extas :-)

Florida sounds fun, especially with all this rain here. When we go on vacation I always feel like I get my money's worth when the weather back home is crummy! Don't you? And I always enjoy it more! I'm sure your seedlings will be fine, too, Illoquin.

Good luck with your salvia seeds, LeBug! (I am still waiting for my second batch of Salvia Seeds from Specialty Perennials--maybe it's time to start badgering them with phone calls again!)

I went through my seeds last night and came across 'Cerinthe' which I haven't heard much about on the DG cottage garden forum. I think I'll start that today unless someone tells me not to! FYI The packet says the cerinthe flower is quite 'fashionable' these days in case you're into 'garden style'!

Is it time to start tomato seeds? Or am I late? I bought three packs of luscious looking heirlooms and some cute tiny tomotoes from Renee's Seeds. I thought I could plant the tiny tomatoes in containers and use them in the cottage garden for accent. I may have to get Earth Boxes for the heirlooms though. We don't have much really good sun (except on the driveway where I could put the earth boxes).

My vines and things I overwintered in the garage are starting to make green shoots. I wonder what I do with them now? Just leave until it's warm outside or do I have to find a sunny window for them?? (I need a greenhouse!!!)

No sprouts in my Wintersowing containers. I put Watersorb gel crystals in with the Promix in those and the containers are looking rather gelatinous and wet. Maybe I over did it, although I thought I measured! Still early for sprouts here though. (if the seeds haven't rotted, that is!)

I want this black and blue salvia really bad t, just hope I have luck with the one that sprouted I'm sowing several salvias but some won't be perennial what did you get? Here's what I sowed yesterday:
indigo blue
turkestonia
subrotundo
striata
macrophylla
blk. & blue
saphire blue
indigo woodland
I'm not even sure if they all will bloom this year for me and hopefully I'll get to collect seeds if they do some of these salvia seeds are so darn hard to collect!

I sowed my tomatoes the 29th of Feb. and that was way too early they will be so tall when I take them out I was wanting to wait a bit and jumped the gun they are always too tall for my lights and they really will be this year!

My geraniums seeds are plumping up gosh I hope they all germinate!

Greenville, IN(Zone 6a)

I have a question, do hollyhocks cross pollinate :)

Nelson, NH(Zone 5a)

Lea-Are the black and blue perennial for you? I am taking cuttings of mine right now because I brought them upstairs from the basement and they are sending up lots of shoots prime for rooting. If they root successfully I will surely send you some-you are ALWAYS so generous!. The aphids have not bothered the black and blue, and they seem obliterated from the s. elegans (time will tell).
Suzy-Have fun in FL!! I could use a few 80 degree days! (or 70) I was talking to my brother last week, he lives in West Palm, and I was telling him we were having some warm days and he said they had been having some cold weather (at night) and we found the temps we were speaking of were one in the same-temps in the 40's-warm for me, cold for him! LOL!

Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5b)

Oh, I was so excited about meeting her, I forgot to say that is Texas Mountain Laurel -- from the swap! Good looking and very big for when you got it!

Tab, Surely you don't still have snow on the ground, do you?

Lea, I hope you have better luck with your B&B Salvia seeds than I am having! I got some from Margaran and also harvested 3 seeds fro mmy B&B, but none have germinated. Yet? I hope none have germinated yet, but you never know!

The Salvias should mostly be hardy for you, though, don't you think? I was thinking I am borderline here. The Coral Nymph is budding out here, well, you know how the buds swell up? That's where I am. I thought it was an annual.

I mulched the B&B, so we'll see if it comes back.

Suzy

Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5b)

Oops, we cross posted...That's funny about the 40s, but you're right -- that would be very coldin West Palm Beach, and very warm in NH!

Lea, Yes, Hollyhocks are notorious for cross pollinating.

Suzy

Nelson, NH(Zone 5a)

Suzy-I'll let you know if the B & B root too and if yours does not come back I'll send you some. I hate to make conditional promises you know? But there are all of the variables taking cuttings this time of year!
Meredith was it you that said you had a B & B winter over outside- tucked in by the house- here in NH?

Greenville, IN(Zone 6a)

I had one little seed sprout in H202 when soaking the black & blue so I've got my fingers crossed just because it sprouted doesn't mean it's going to finish I found that out last year, I had some sprout in H202 and when I planted them they never came up on some other seeds I may have missed the day they sprouted though I was really watching the BB! I have 24 seeds I should have left some in the soak to see if anymore were going to sprout but I went ahead and planted them in their seed tray so time will tell :) I think I have some coming in a trade but if the seeds don't make it and the trade doesn't work out I'll sure let you know Kath, thanks :) I should have some salvia hot lips and victoria blue coming too in that trade, I had victoria blue for a long time and the freeze got it last year just made me sick that is such a beautiful one too! Not for my zone but I grew it by the road so I had it for a long time and traded all of my seeds isn't that the way it goes LOL I love the perennial salvias even if they aren't a perennial here :)

Well I guess I'll have to keep my holly hocks seperate and just didn't want to do that maybe I have enough seeds to do them seperate and down by the cedar tree, that's an awful site need to spruce it up a bit :)

I have two tripple yellow daturas coming up :)

I used to go to Clearmont and Daytona in Fl. all of the time and in March it was always chilly at night but the day time was nice, but that was before they started getting freezes down there, I remember the first freeze my best friend lived in Daytona and she was here and lost all of her plants she had stuck under her trailer. I miss my trips to Fl. she had a resident alligator too LOL

(bestest fairy)Tempe, MI(Zone 5b)

Here is a pic of my seedlings that are big enough to come out of the Sterlite GH and that have at least 50% of the planted seeds germinated

Southeastern, NH(Zone 5b)

Yes flower it was me that had a B&B overwinter - I got 5 seeds from it and I have two that sprouted and are working on their first set of leaves. They were planted right next to salvia coccinea so I wonder if they will be mutant babies. Lol.

South/Central, FL(Zone 9a)

gemini, I would never ask for your newly purchased goodies. LOL Or would I? ; )

Suzy, I'm still studing your schedule. : ) I trying to figure something out.
~Lucy

Springfield, MA(Zone 6a)

Yippee! I have stuff I winter sowed starting to germinate - white dianthus, and some blue salvia!

(bestest fairy)Tempe, MI(Zone 5b)

I'm not trying to be stubid, but what is wrong w/ HH cross pollinating?? I have Slavia Ladiy in Red & Salvia Azura germinating and Salpigloss!!!YEAH!!!

Greenville, IN(Zone 6a)

Fairy there's nothing wrong with HH crossing but in some places I want certain colors and can't count on that if they cross :) I had pink ones in my butterfly nectar garden and want to plant some darker ones in the bird garden the darker ones wouldn't go in my nectar garden :)

Oh, I might start my kew blue today :) I sowed 9 seed trays yesterday and now Im starting to wonder if I will have enough space left for when I finish transplanting, I have 5 full flats of seed trays going now lol

Mount Laurel, NJ(Zone 7a)

enjoyed your seedling photos Suzy, you sure have decent size seedlings already! Is it possible the tall plant in with your dutchmen's pipe seedlings is: Velvet leaf, Abutilon theophrasti Medicus; also known as “pie marker”, “buttonweed”, “Indian mallow”, “velvet weed”, “cotton-weed”, “Indian hemp”, “wild cotton”, “butter-weed”? I have it around here and sometimes I let it go because I love the seed pods. It gets extremely large and your large seedling reminded me of it!

I'm glad your echinacea pallidas are up, mine haven't sprouted yet. Also, nothing on any of my lantana seeds.

I do have new seedlings starting in my ws jugs as of yesterday!!! ...eyeball plant, jasione montana, hens & chicks poppies, apple green poppies, ox-eye daisy and cupids dart

I'm off to a friends to pick up some asparagus roots :)

Greenville, IN(Zone 6a)

I just checked my jugs out yesterday but I don't have anything up yet, kind of glad it's still early yet for mine but I keep checking lol

I wanted to get out today and put compost on top of my gal. containers but it's so damp and icy cold out today! I know my babies are hungry after a long winters sleep!

North West, OH(Zone 5b)

Opinions please. I just designed a flower bed for a friend, and before I send it to her for approval I thought I'd run it by you guys. I have never designed a bed in my life, LOL. I just plop things in and if I don't like the way it looks I move them. But she thinks I'm some kind of gardening godess and I'd sure hate to disappoint her. ;-P

She prefers hot colors which is not the way I generelly lean. I want to throw some blue or purple in there so bad, but I'm not sure if it would fit. What do you you all think? I'm going to send her some orange zinnia seed and mixed calundula to use as filler this year until the perennials get established. (Mind you this is all from extra seed I have on hand. I'm not intending to purchase anything more.)

Thumbnail by Lala_Jane
Greenville, IN(Zone 6a)

I'd throw some dark blue or puple right in the middle in front of the coneflower but I don't know much about arrangeing a garden either mine are all collage lol But that is pretty La!

Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5b)

Yes, I agree - do you have any Verbena bonariensis? Speaking as somebody who likes hot colors, along with Lea, I might add, I think regular purple coneflower or one of the new ones, depending on budget, would be better than white.

Suzy

North West, OH(Zone 5b)

I have white coneflower seed (that's why they're white, LOL). I might still have some purple though....I'll dig for it and see. I think I passed all my extra along in the last swap tho. Thanks for the input ladies!

Greenville, IN(Zone 6a)

I'm looking to see if I got rid of all of the Verbena bonariensis seed in the swap I think I have some but where it is not sure lol Just found some fennel seeds that I've been looking for when I was looking for the verbena maybe I'll find my whooper green pepper seeds LOL

North West, OH(Zone 5b)

I almost forgot. Michaela I wouldn't wait any longer on the silver mist. I started these February 2nd and they're still no bigger than a pea.

LOL Lea!

Greenville, IN(Zone 6a)

I know La here it is the middle of March and I STILL have too many seeds, I'm in big trouble!!!

Greenville, IN(Zone 6a)

La, how about that great blue lobelia, I have some extra seeds that I didn't need? Or some ornamental millet behind the white?

http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/133/

This picture sucks but mine were huge and georgeous, I only had two plants and they just made the garden:

http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/showimage/97138/

Springfield, MA(Zone 6a)

Hi Lala-jane - started the artisima yesterday! :-)

North West, OH(Zone 5b)

Lea the millet would look great and I do have some of that, but it's an annual. She is NOT a gardner by any stretch of the imagination so I need to put down as many perennials as possible. My guess is that this is a one shot deal so I need to get all the perennials in place this spring. The lobelia would also look stunning (hmmm....I wonder if I might need some of that LOL!), but I think it's about the same height as the coneflower. I'd need something either a bit taller to stick behind it or a bit shorter for the front.

Greenville, IN(Zone 6a)

Back to the drawing board lol I'm mad at you La I found more seeds that I forgot I had LOL I still haven't found the VB though :( I may have gotten rid of it, sorry, I did find a 'few' that I've been looking for! I don't have too many seeds to taller plants I can't hardly grow them because of the wind here. I am trying a few more this year so I'll look and see if I have anything in my WS bag if I don't find anything there we're out of luck on my end, and I'll check and see how many lobelia seeds I have left, you might NEED that one LOL

(bestest fairy)Tempe, MI(Zone 5b)

I would think some orange and either some purple or blue would look wonderful in there-I like the white, but it would need some white somewhere else to balance. I would love to see a spirea-like magic carpet in there-I think the chartreuse leaves would look great amidst all of it-also maybe gaillardia oranges and lemons instead of regular?? If she wanted something taller, I have my candy lilies already coming up & they multiply like rabbits and have either slamony colored or sherbert orange colored flowers she is welcome to-they bloom late summer-fall and the fans themselves are about 3' tall with the flowers about a foot over that or so...japanese bloog grass would also look good with it...maybe some daylilies on the sides...stella is relatively common and inexpensive to find....ooo, orange pixie lilies....dragons blood sedum would look great in front or oranges & lemons....

sorry, just brainstorming. If I was going to add blue or purple it would be a very dark purple-a couple spots-agree with either coneflower or maybe some veronica or may night salvia....

North West, OH(Zone 5b)

Yikes. She just sent me the dimensions and I think I'm going to have to start over anyway. It's 4.5 X 25. Now that is one long narrow bed. I've never worked with anything like that before.

Stacey those are all GREAT suggestions, thanks! The big issue here is that I'm attempting to turn her into a gardener, and until I do I doubt if she'll throw any money into it herself. This bed is going to have to be built from seed I send her..at least for now. I'm kind of wondering if she'll be like me having zero interest in gardening until I made my first bed....and now I can't get enough!

Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5b)

Hey!!!

What are you still doing here?

Everybody else has moved on to the new thread!

I found the lobelia La I'll send you my leftovers :)

Greenville, IN(Zone 6a)

OOPS! You didn't have a link here yet, so thought we could finish our chat lol
