Suzy, how can he miss those worm? They are huge lol Of course they aren't once those little eggs are on there so awful looking with them sucking the life out of them downright pitiful, I feel so sorry for those worms lol

There is about to be a murder here, dad is mooing like a cow, making sounds like an old car horn, sounds of a sheep and going to the front door and the back door and knocking on it, I am about to pullllll my hair out!!! Poor guy has no sense at all and is driving me nuts I have got to get out tomorrow and take him to eat lol All it takes is getting him out of the house for a few minutes and then he is good to go for at least one day lol

Sounds like I would like to know this 'John' too lol But I haven't even started the salvia seeds yet that I have left from last year :) Maybe I'll wait until next year so I can 'pig out' on those LOL Think I'm learning my lesson about pigging out on seeds this year though LOL How do you look this salvia up just look 'Yvonne's Salvia' up?

Greenville, IN(Zone 6a)

Cool Fairy, I bet it's not a perennial for us I'll google it :)

Nelson, NH(Zone 5a)

Hi everyone!-Not to totally change the subject, but I read on the back of a pack of seeds of datura in the gardening store that the seeds need light. You wouldn't think that for a seed that size-but we'll see how this helps out. I have a few different I. nil varities growing in the pot they will live in. Quite a few different cranesbill geraniums sprouted-some from Weez. These are indoors as I still can not see my WS jugs. I have asarina vine seeds sprouting like crazy but I am concerned that they are very spindly looking. Has anyone grown these before?

Greenville, IN(Zone 6a)

Yes, when I looked the datura up in my book it said to just cover 1/16th so I figured they needed light seems like I planted mine a couple of years ago 1/4" deep cause I was trying to grow brugs too and they needed to be 1/4" so figured it was the same for the daturas but they still came up I don't think I had one not to germinate then cause I remember trying to get a friend of mine to come get some lol

I haven't grown the asarina vine before sorry.

hi there
yvonnes salvia...i would think it is salvia splendens

South/Central, FL(Zone 9a)

Yeah, who is John? I didn't want to go over to GW and beg for seeds, they might shoot me. I have on my Dave's T-shirt, and it doesn't need any red on it. lol : )

Boy, my Mexican Flame vine is beautiful today. : ) I just planted it last July.

I don't know why you don't have more murders there in winter, seriously!

Buahahahaha

Greenville, IN(Zone 6a)

Lucy, that is beautiful! Will it bloom the first year, if i start it inside I have some seeds to it, well three, and I want that so bad but it's not a perennial here so I hate to start it if it won't bloom the first year, I just want to see the blooms! I don't have a place to over winter it :(

Hi Flowerhead

Newbie so think I lost my first reply to you but you might get 2! sorry. I grew asarina (pink with yellow throat) from seed 2 years ago. Unfortunately I lost all my seedlings in a full try except 2 which were shorter at 1-1.5" tall. All the rest died off - not through damping off but seemed to bend over and where stem stressed then broke down later in this weak point a few weeks later. They never recovered from having bent over through non-support.. I didnt have anything suitable to hand to support so used plastic straws and very very lighted twisted around a plastic twist. I saved 2 seedlings which grew to vigourous and strong vines. I overwintered in greemhouse 1 st year but was too late the next year and the first Autimn frosts caught me out. Nevertheless the 2 plants provided hundreds of seeds from the large pods so I will be trying again this year. Good luck Kathy

South/Central, FL(Zone 9a)

Yes, Bug...MFV will bloom the 1st year. : ) Someone told me that maybe 1 out of a hundred of the seeds would sprout. I don't know if that is true or not. I think I see a few coming up that I planted in a pot. Get them started now, and see. If it doesn't work, I will root you one real fast, and send it when I send the pink scullcap.
~Lucy

Greenville, IN(Zone 6a)

Thanks Lucy, I'll let you know though if I have any luck with it starting :) Thanks buddy! I won't try and start it for a couple of weeks, can't let it get too tall downstairs :)

Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5b)

I'm coming to Florida in a week, Lucy -- to Melbourne, near Beckygardener. Are you anywhere near there? I could pick up Lea's Mexican Flame Vine ...hah haha notcied i didn't say I could pick it up *for her*?

Actually I am going to hit the garden centers down there and bring back things that aren't out and for sale in Indiana.

I'll be online daily to ask questions about what we can grow or not, and what we can winter over.

Kathyt/Seedholic, Welcome to the Cg forum!! I grew the Asarina last year, a purple kind, but it was sort of dull where I had it - the pin k or red sounds far prettier.

Suzy

Greenville, IN(Zone 6a)

LOL don't you be stealing my vine Miss Suzy, I better get it LOL Lucy has a skullcap to root too she's sending so she might want to wait on that one too :) That's so sweet for you to ask her :)

South/Central, FL(Zone 9a)

Melbourne is quite a ways from me, Suzy. How long are you gonna be down here? And is it gonna be during the week, or on a weekend? I'm trying to think what I might need over in that area. : )

Bug, the MFV won't grow very fast at first, but when it gets really warm weather it will take off. : )

Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5b)

I am coming for a week and a day -- I am free for 8/9 hour stretches because my friend works, but she's in retail, so never knows her schedule more than 3 days in advance -- ok, not quite that bad, but almost. I will have her car, but naturally I barely know where I am going and have to pay for gas. There is a wildlfe nature - native plant garden center near her, but I have to ask Beckygardener the name of it.

I want to go look for wildflower seed, but there are alligators everywhere down there and I want to keep both legs. I also am not interested in meeting any Armadillos. Here is the wildflower seed I am after:
http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/67375/
http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/2736/

Plus there is a yellow one there I have seen, but I want the seed and it's hit or miss as to whether I am there at the right time.

(and going to the Jackson Browne concert on the 20th. LOL...does that date me???)

Suzy

Nelson, NH(Zone 5a)

Thanks for the asarina info-just wondering if it looked threadlike spindly when they started?

Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5b)

Oh, yes! This is one to pinch for sure. I then had it growing up a skewer, but that ran into the lights. I pulled alot of seed pods, but I am hoping it reseeds since I haven't sown the red one , err, I don't htink I have anyway

Hi everyone
As far as Yvonna salvia seed I thought I found the link here. After reading about her I contacted the guy named John and just asked for some. I think he was on garden web and had a yahoo address. Apparently he has lots of seeds and gets many requests. You just send him a stamped return envelope and bam your seeds arrive. I'm not comfortable giving out his address but it should be easy enough to find. The salvia are very tall. Helen

South/Central, FL(Zone 9a)

Suzy, what do you want those weeds(wildflowers) for? lol

I was looking at the map and Melbourne wouldn't be all that far if there was a road straight across to it. But, you have to half way around the world to get there from here. It looks to be about 80 miles or so as the crow flys, and 150 or so by the roads.

I may have those weeds in my yard. I'll check. : ) ~Lucy

Vancouver, WA(Zone 8a)

The last time I was in Florida on vacation, all it did was pour rain. I was driving across the state to try and at least see dry. I don't need to go to Florida to see gray skies, 60 degrees, and rain...

Suzy, there aren't more murders here in the winter because we don't ask each other questions like that. Instead, we read books, drink loads of very strong coffee and look forward to the next opportunity to torture midwesterners with our lack of snow and ability to garden just about year-round. Did I mention that DH mowed today? Ah, the smell of fresh grass.....

Cincinnati (Anderson, OH(Zone 6a)

I sent away for Yvonne's Salvia seed, too. Planted them about 8 days ago, so I'm looking for sprouts soon. All my other salvias (planted to date) have sprouted. Still have more salvia seed coming from Specialty Perennials (I know, I won't hold my breath on these!). Yvonne's looks like it will take up a huge amount of space in the garden.

blueglancer--I love that Mexican Flame Vine. Bet the hummingbirds love it?

Illoquin, I like the little red 'tassel flower' in the summer garden to fill in (although a bit weedy for some tastes)--just a few years ago it was hard to find emelia javanica (?) (the little red one) seed for sale online. Now you are going to start a rage for the purple version which I have seen listed for sale only one time, I think! I will be interested to know if you find it and how it grows in the garden.

It will be fun to go plant hunting in Florida. My BBC gardening magazine (can't think of the name of it right now--similar to 'Fine Gardening') just had a series on Plant Hunters who travel the world to bring back rare plants to the UK. Sounded exciting. I am reading a book about a Victorian age National Geographic explorer (from Ohio) who did the same.

Yesterday my son helped me set up a really big 'light farm' in the basement so I'll be ready to start my zinnias and marigolds soon.

Very fun to watch the birds in the snow this weekend. We had more than 30 Northern Cardinals feeding in the garden yesterday morning. Really brightened up the dull wintry atmosphere before the sun came out.

yep we mowed yesterday as well
the grass really needed it

South/Central, FL(Zone 9a)

Tab, I only had 1 hummingbird last year, and none so far this year. I didn't notice if she liked the MFV or not. She mainly stayed around my Aloe blooms, and a blue salvia I had. : )

Mount Laurel, NJ(Zone 7a)

good morning, I almost lost you all! I was thinking it was a bit quit...no updated posts in my thread watcher....low and behold your on #6!!!!!!!!

my basils are all germinating (except for seeds from my Italian), critters' Italian, my lemon, and I think it was ansonfans' thai basil are starting.

my petunias are not growing at all.....still little weeny ones. who was it that transplanted your petunias already? how did yours grow so fast?

Scottsburg, IN(Zone 6a)

Hey everyone! I lost track of the thread, but finally found you this morning! I've got another tray of seeds to start up today, and some others that I know I'll need to transplant. I left a cover on one tray a bit too long, and have some mold, but nothing I'm going to throw myself under a truck over.

My petunias are really slow too - but since this is my first year with this stuff I figured it was just the petunias :) So far the stuff that I have that's germinated has all done well - maybe not quickly, but at least they're all hanging in there. My DBIL said that there are some old window frames (possibly still with glass) that were dumped on their property years ago. Next time I'm down there I'm taking my boots with me for a tromp through their woods to this dumping area. If they've got frames I've got the perfect spot for a cold frame!

Here's a pic of some of the sprouts that were started at my sis's near the end of January. The Lady in Red salvia and Johnny Jump Ups are doing great, the Blue Sage is taking its time and growing more slowly.

How are snapdragons doing for anyone/everyone??

Thumbnail by dryad57
Greenville, IN(Zone 6a)

Look at your violets they look nice did you pinch them Robin? I always have trouble pinching I'm afraid I will hurt the plant lol That tansy is looking good too! Maybe I'll start some in the house, maybe, I have quite a few to sow yet and so far behind lol A note on your petunias they like to be a little cooler when they are growing, the last year I tried to grow them I tried to keep them warm like the rest of the seedlings and they did a lot better when I put them on the bottom shelf where it was cooler, anyone else have anything to say about that?

I was busy yesterday and missed out on the thread I can imagine how it is to try and get caught up after being gone for a while lol

I had some lemon basil on the mat and ended up letting it dry out too much now I have to plant it again lol Oh well lol

Mowing grass! Take the weed killer to it and don't worry about it we have enough seeds to put in it's place LOL

Winchester, KY(Zone 6a)

Robin, your babies look wonderful! All stocky and happy looking. My snapdragons all look to have transplanted beautifully! I have 3 more packs of snapdragon seed germinating now too- I'm very determined- I will have snapdragons, LOL. I waited 24 hours after transplanting to turn the fan back on them, just to be sure not to dehydrate them.

I think your violas look big enough to start hardening them off in a cold frame. I usually like to get them in the ground before the end of the first week of April. I sowed all mine in September, a month later than I intended, but was till able to get them in the ground the first week of November and they've stood right up to the elements. This is reminding me, I've got to go ahead and order seed for this fall!

My petunias are growing slowly too, but I think that is typical of them. I believe LeBug is correct about them liking it cool though. Have you noticed in the cool days of fall how petunias start really growing again? I've also seen lots of seedlings pop up around them at that time too.

Vancouver, WA(Zone 8a)

Lea, LOL! I'm fighting for every inch I can get-I'll let DH know your suggestion... ;)

Greenville, IN(Zone 6a)

Susybell, I love the smell of fresh grass too but when I've got two acres to cut I would rather plant it and smell the neighbor's fresh cut grass smell, it's gonna take a few years to get it all planted though :) besides I don't have the time to cut grass when I'm messing with all of these plants and trying to get them in the ground cutting grass is just not on my priority list, that's one thing about the really hot and dry summers like we had last year, I didn't have to cut as much and didn't cut when I should have lol So I didn't do much cutting at all but I did spray a lot of grass killer :) When I was doing the front yard dad was watching and I told him "say by by to the grass" LOL

Scottsburg, IN(Zone 6a)

I'll have to go check the petunias and see if they're getting too much heat. Thanks for the comments on my babies :) I've not pinched anything back - those violas and sages survived my sis's basement and her random watering, that may have had a pinching effect!

I was thinking about a rotating fan in the basement but was afraid I would forget and things would dry out, so I've decided to put one on a timer, that way the seedlings will get their fresh air and exercise. The trays that are in my office get talked to and fussed with more often, so I don't know that they'd benefit much from a fan....

And I meant to say Thank You earlier to our Illustrious Illoquin for lettin' y'all know where I was. I HATE it when I do stupid things and hurt my back - I always know I can kiss a week of productive work goodbye....

Seandor - how is your grey garden coming along??

Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5b)

Dryad! You're back! Yay!! I wasn't sure what to do -- where to post, but I knew of 2 places you hung out, so posted here & there. :)) Your seedlings look FANTASTIC!!!

Susybell, LOL!

Neal, I have a tray of snaps, then some pots and things are not looking too good on the tray. I have the soil all ready to go and am thinking baout using the same exact cell packs for better seed, but as soon as I do the the originals will start coming up. Guess I'd better start over with them, durnit! Last year they were so easy, but this year they seem very slow.

I have to run downstairs to pull the petunias off the heat mat...I forgot, but you are absolutely right - they prefer shirtsleeve temperatures, not tank tops :)

Every day when I come home from work I look in my littel sterlite container and see more babies!! I can't beleive my cheap little GH idea worked!! I now have most of my var. of HH up, the ladybells (from susybell I think), cushion spurge, gazania, himilayan blue poppy, and some other stuff I can't remember right now-it is like my Bday every day!!! I sowed a couple things last year, but this is for the most part all new to me!!! I keep trying to take pics, but none of them have true leaves yet, so they are all kinda wirey looking and don't show up very good on camera!!!

DRYAD-welcome back Robin!! Glad you are feeling better!!:)

Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5b)

Fairy,

That's great!!! I forget what you said -- is your Sterlite inside or outside? Did you poke holes in the top tolet water in, or is it just covered? I checked today, but nothing has come up outside yet.

Morning all!

Seems like I missed this thread alltogether and found it by accident.

However, it seems to be the perfect place to show off some of my babies: http://i208.photobucket.com/albums/bb270/AnkeFreese/Slideshows/Babies.swf

There's many more, of course, but that may become a bit boring! Have spent all sunday pricking out and just started another sowing round....

Nelson, NH(Zone 5a)

Stacey-That is SO exciting! I can't wait until I can see my containers again! I'm so envious!

Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5b)

Hi Tuink! Sorry about leaving the other threads without making sure you were with us -- but I *have* been using the same bear so you can find us if you come looking. :))

Great slideshow and nice looking seedlings!!!

Suzy

's-Gravenhage, Netherlands(Zone 8b)

No problem, and thanks for the compliment!

(bestest fairy)Tempe, MI(Zone 5b)

I have mine inside in front of a window w/ 2 small glasses of water to keep moisture in it-it is foggy, but not dripping, so I think their is just about the right amount of moisure-it has a blue lid which is fine, I just did it upsaide down having everything sit on the lid. It has also worked to help some cutting start rooting!! No holes in the top-I think if it gets too moist, I will, but right now it all seems OK. It is a 13 gallon one I thnik-it was like $4 @ Target....

My hemilain (sp?) blue poppy is in the basement w/ a couple other things that said about 60*-it is chillier down there....

Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5b)

Ooo-ooh! I see! Inside!

I thought they were outside and was wondering what kind of weather you were having in Michigan if your Wsd stuff was up before mine!!

I have flats of pots with sandwich baggies over each one individually...along the same lines as what you've got, but the baggies are sort of flimsy and floppy, not as good as the rubbermaid thingie.

Suzy

Cincinnati (Anderson, OH(Zone 6a)

Tuink--love your slide show. So cute with the border and the shooting stars around your little green babies.

Now, tell, me, Tuink (I'm sort of new to starting seeds inside)--do you prick out your seedlings from a row of seedlings started under lights in a tray and then plant them two by two in plastic cups? And then from there do they go into the garden, or is there another pot before the garden. (Thanks. sorry to bore everyone with this (mundane and probably redundant) question).
