Water Cooler - 6

Why can't I make that much money by doing absolutely nothing?

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

The real question is how does he??

The Monadnock Region, NH(Zone 5a)

true, true

belleville, NJ(Zone 6a)

i don't actually think he does "absolutely nothing."

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

You're right Amy, nothing would be an improvement.

belleville, NJ(Zone 6a)

wow.
Doesn't he produce a lot of other people's music?

i'm not a fan, but in the celebrity crazed culture in which we live, an awful lot of people make money for doing very little - athletes in many cases being the worst offenders, but plenty of "stars" in other fields make ridiculous fortunes also. i wouldn't single out just one person. (After all, A-Rod makes more than the Florida Marlins payroll.)

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

No one else in entertainment history received this size contract. 'Music' is the operative word here. He is part of, and promotes, an industry that routinely preaches violence, hatred of police and misogyny, among other things. Athletes certainly don't deserve their outrageous salaries, but I don't see them poisoning the minds of young people like rappers do.

Really? You can't think of athletes that fit that bill?

sorry. i dislike generalizations.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

There may be some athletes that do, but as an industry, no. Hip hop - yes. When was the last time you heard of an athlete's 'posse' taking out another's?? Recently civil and women's rights leaders have had the guts to speak out against it and threatened boycotts if they did not clean up their act and eliminate some of the horrible lyrics and stuff portrayed in the videos.

Keene, NH(Zone 5a)

victor- its true that some rap songs are pretty wierd- lots of songs are, not just rap- but you know (I get these lectures from my kids) There are more and more of them that actually talk about difficult situations in a kind of hoping for change way. Like, there is a popular one right now that that is pretty catchy that talks about how too many people just do things for a dollar.. (a dolla dolla bill, y'all).... But, we could go on and on about all kinds of stuff out there that's upsetting.. Another reason the garden is a wonderful place!- sarah

belleville, NJ(Zone 6a)

i do not disagree, but i don't neccessarily think you can condemn an entire style of music because some of the people in it are bad.
i don't know much about Jay-Z except he is super rich and owns several companies - clothing, music, and i think a basketball team and he is involved with Beyonce. And he's produced some of her songs and that "Umbrella" song from some other girl last year.
Is he one of the really bad guys?

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

I don't think he is, but as the big-time producer and promoter he is, he has to be held somewhat responsible. I never recall him coming to the forefront and calling out those who put out those type of records. He may have even produced some of the worse offenders. I don't know that though.

Southern, CT(Zone 6a)

Who calls out Anthrax, Insane Clown Posse, etc? Who produced them? Are all heavy metal music producers responsible?

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

To me, there is no difference. They're both crap. The influence and notoriety of hip-hop is just bigger. I ask the same question, when did Anthrax's posse put a hit on another metal group's posse? Believe me, if a $150 million dollar contract were rewarded to a metal producer, I would have posted it also. (Just like the insanity of the Yankees paying A-Rod.)

Edited to answer your question more directly, Dave. If I recall correctly, Tipper Gore first called them out about 15 yrs ago. I remember her testifying about lyrics and she was opposed by Frank Zappa and someone from Twisted Sister.

Just want to add that, like I said on the music thread, I actually liked rap when it first came out and we had a kid on our block rapping before ANYONE heard of it. Well before the Sugar Hill Gang. So I found it disturbing the way it devolved. Same can be said of metal. Guess it's a reflection of society, unfortunately.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Received my Dynamite fertilizer today.

Southern, CT(Zone 6a)

I was glad Tipper took on both cultures when she spoke up. There is a lot that is offensive in both to me. Just don't think Jay-Z is the focus. He did bring us the lovely and talented Beyonce. I think the $150,000,000 deal is more of a business merger than a record deal. The guy is a business mogul. Plus his pants are tailored and stay up.

But my point is that people didn't come down on Zappa for not attacking ICP or Marylin Manson.

What's different about this dynamite stuff? (I'm not familiar)

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

I have to chime in on Marylin Manson....anyone who removes his ribs for the purpose of pleasuring himself is SICK!

Southern, CT(Zone 6a)

He is a sick puppy but I guess I'm not aware of what you are talking about. please explain (if possible)

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

I agree that Jay-Z is not one of the big offenders - just that he helped promote and grow the whole hip-hop thing. So did others. But he's the one who made the news with the contract. He is what he is because of hip-hop. And he certainly has not been the focus of anyone's wrath, as far as I know. The industry in general was. Did he discover Beyonce??

I never heard of the Marilyn Manson thing either. I can't stand either type of music myself.

Don't know anything about the fertilizer.

Please read:

i had a totally brilliant literature professor who used to tell classes that in Victorian times, women had ribs removed to make their waists smaller too.
It just isn't true.

Whats the world comming to. Isn't one facelift, nosejob, cheelimplant, chin reduction, dental implant, ear tuck, brow lift enough?
Thats just the part above the waist. Joan Rivers an example of plastic surgery run-amuck.
Mae West said it best"before 60 a woman needs good investments, after 60 a woman needs good character" I believe thats how it goes?

DH has a cold and don't feel good. This is how senile I can be :-) He wont use Vicks. So he is sleeping in the chair and I took the vicks and held it under his nose. Next his nose starts to wiggle and mouth opens and starts moving. Oh how witchy am I?

South China, ME(Zone 5a)
