I started some Lulu dwarf mix on Feb 10th... here they are today
what have you bought so far? part three
Aren't they adorable? I love their leaves.
And, how come I've not heard of the Sugar Hill Lupine festival?
And also, BTW, thank you to my dear, dear, DG friend who sent us so many lupine seeds!! I forgot to thank this pearl of a friend before now, having had the flu and all. My sincerest apologies!!
It's a grand festival and they have maps showing the different fields. Even the local dining spots have maps as placemats.
You're quite welcome.
So, in which town is it held? I gotta check this out!
Here's a link: http://www.harmanscheese.com/lupine.html
Thank you so much!
OK ~ that link is a keeper! Franconia Notch, though .... hmmmm .... well north of me. Sounds, and feels, like a day trip coming on.
I think i'd like to go to that too!
I recall it being in June so it's a nice time of year for a day trip.
I was thinking it is close to my B-Day and I may be able to get a trip out of a family member if i mention thats what I would like for my B-day! Sometimes you just got to be sneaky to get what you want! LOL
Just make a tiny change and make your birthday from June 1 through June 30th. Party all month long.
How nice!
Thanks Pirl, I fell right in love when I saw her.
Oh she is a pretty little creature. Nice DH too.
Pirl added your festival link to bookmarks, maybe someday I can get up there, looks like a nice trip.
I love those little lupine leaves. The leaves of some plants are more important in the garden than flowers. I love the baptisia leaves, too.
Pixie, how cute!
Thanks Polly & Ngam....of course being a fairy attracted me to her, but the bouquet of flowers in her hand did it.
I agree, Polly. My Baptisia is about 15' from the lupines in one small garden. The older I get the more I appreciate foliage but the seed pods on the Baptisia are beautiful.
Shhh...don't let the secret out...guess what I do with all of my hosta flowers? WHACK...they meet Mr Felco, and are done. I guess if I plan on Hosta crosses I'm not going to be able to do that anymore...lol. I love hosta for their leaves, doesn't everyone? I feel that the flowers detract from the foilage, but, I digress...lol.
I have only planted this one plant one time, I think, long stretch here, think it was a cardoon. If this is the correct name, the plant grew sword like leaves, that were heavily serrated, fuzzy, and a silvery/white color (almost like Stachys/Lambs Ears).
The flowers of this plant were really obnoxious too. The leaves got to be about 2-3' tall, and the flower spike was about 5-6' tall...maybe a tad bigger. If anyone else has grown this fierce looking oddity, please chime in!
I actually have emails coming in from 2 different growers. I found a place that has/had Agave 'Spot.' So, that will be forthcoming. These 2 companies called me to ask if it was ok to send me the plants in April/May, to make sure the plants are leafing out! WoW...good service with no product yet...I'm impressed.
One of the things I most strongly remember from the last time I went to the New England Flower Show (umpteen years ago) was the foliage (do they have flowers?) of the Sweet Woodruff, which reminds me so of baby lupines! The flowers are nice too, LOL!

I cut all the flower stems off the hostas too, except for the good sniffing ones.
Me, too, Polly.
I just picked up my Blueberry Sundae and Fooled Me daylilies, and astilbe (Eden's Twinkle, Eden's Phoenix, and Visions) from Cheshire Nursery. Don't have time today, but they said to go ahead and put them in the ground, so that's my mission tomorrow. I just don't know where I'm going to plant them yet, but *darn* I may have to dig up some more grass to make room!
Perhaps we could all meet there at the Lupine Show. I dunno, though. If DSIL has to watch the little ones too often, he gets cranky.
Oh gee, drumlin:
Having to dig up more grass ... what a shame!
;>)
*Tsk*, ain't it? This is only the second year I've had this house, but the grass it in retreat. One, because I don't fertilize it properly so I kill it anyway, and two because until they invent a grass that produces pretty flowers, it's just a garnish in the yard. Kinda like the old parsley stuff that you threw out.
Wow--I miss a few days & I'm way behind everyone. Carrie--glad you got a new car--I need one badly, but don't want to spend the bucks! The baby lupines are lovely--I can get them to grow for 1 yr. in my garden--then they're gone! Folks--where & when is the RU?
drumlin, LOL on the grass as the garnish of the yard
pixie, I LOVE your fairy. if you find you don't like her after she arrives, you have my address ;-)
baby lupines are pretty. and it's easy to tell them from the weeds. rue is pretty, too. chocolate daisies look exactly like dandelions. this will be my first year for baptisia (if they grow for me), so I'm not familiar yet.
I know a lot of people cut off their hosta flowers, but I like them. It's a good thing, because I just wouldn't have the heart to whack 'em lol
If I'm not lazy I will cut the non-fragrant ones. The flower stalks are just way too tall for the plants. Something went wrong there!
Sort of like that huge pit in the avocado, Victor!
Yes - some things just don't make sense!
LOL Last year, being my first year growing hostas, when they sprouted flowers I remember doing a double-take and going where did they come from? None of the pictures I'd seen had flowers in them and they do look kinda funky. Other than the plantaginea I'm getting I'll probably snip the flowers too this year.
Chiming in a little late, but I may have to take a day/weekend trip up to the festival too. My sister will go since she's on the way. It starts right as Hell Week is ending for me. I'll definitely be in the mood to just walk around looking at all the pretty flowers.
It's very pretty, very relaxing and you'll have lots of time to talk as you roam up and down the hillsides to look at the mostly purple/blue lupines. Now, as I see from the site, there's more (much more) to do than when we were there.
i just got one of those online coupon offers from Santa Rosa - $25 off an order of $75 or more, and i still can't make myself think of spending $50. ouch.
But i do desperately want tall grass. And that's their specialty.
hmmm.
sigh. Sounds lovely.
Cute fairy.
Amy - is there anyone with whom you could share the offer? Someone local?
Be careful of some of the miscanthus, Amy. They get very floppy when wet. My favorite grass is calamagrostis 'Karl Foerster'.
Allison, love that fairy, was eyeing it the other day. I already have the one where one leg hangs down and the other she's holding her knee. Has the same wings as yours only she's all in peach and yellow I think.
i was looking at the silver feather kind.
i want TALL and not too invasive... i am trying to block the view of a dumpster. Nice, eh?
