what have you bought so far? part three

Nantucket, MA(Zone 7a)

Pirl, Rose standards? Please post a picture. Do they winter over in a garage? I have one, that was a spit back from a friend who just didn't want it any more. I took it for the great pot it was in, but now I have had it for 3 years. I have not done anything to trim it into any kind of shape. It is just a mini pink on a tall stalk, but it blooms it's little weeping head off. What should I do to it? Patti

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Just trim it if it needs trimming and treat it like your average rose. Mine stayed in the garage all winter and are putting out new growth. One more scheduled for mid April delivery. I'd have to look for photos but if I find any good ones I'll let you know.

Framingham, MA(Zone 6a)

0oh I looked at Forest Farm site... you guys would not believe the shipping for just a few roses... too much!!!!! but the roses are a great price.... specially for one of my favorite roses Souvenier de La Malmaison... I would by 10 and not feel guilty!!!!

Brentwood, NY(Zone 6b)

Being the newbie that I am I put 'Ship at best time' on all my early orders figuring they would know better than me when to ship. My later orders as I started having visions of everything showing up the same week I started putting late April/early May. So far I my Holland Bulb Farms order showed up two weeks ago. Easy To Grow Bulbs came this tuesday and according to the UPS notification I received today Van Bourgandien will be showing up the middle of next week. Luckily the bulk of the orders are bulbs but there are a few bare root plants coming that I'm trying to figure out what to do with for the next month - month and a half before I can plant them outside.

Wheatfield, NY(Zone 6a)

All I have so far is a few bags of tall phlox in my garage fridge from the co-op. and I knew when those would be coming. but I didn't know it would still be snowing :( I try to pick my dates so things are staggered and they don't all come at once.

Kass, I bought one rose ('Jan's Wedding') from Forest Farm last year along with some shrubs and perennials. I couldn't find it anywhere else. It was a decent sized plant, but not a nice shape... long, spindly canes. If it survives the winter ok, I'll cut it back and try to shape it up.

Eastern Long Island, NY(Zone 7a)

I got an order of 14 bareroots Monday, planted them same day, I didn't want to take the chance of losing them before planting them. I also have a bag of tall Phlox in my garage, going to pot them up this weekend. ☺

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Bareroot what, WC?

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Jan, glad you finally found Jan's Wedding. When I was searching for it last year...no one was selling it. I am now trying to find the rose 'Tiffany'..I used to have it but lost it. I need to make sure it's hardy to zone 5 BEFORE I buy it this time, last time I didn't look and that could be why I lost it.

Thomaston, CT

So far nothing has been shipped to me, & I'm glad--I'd like the weather to warm, also--hate to plant in the cold & damp! I did notice, though, when I dug out my roses that the soil was not too cold--I guess poppy & larkspur seeds should go in now.

Eastern Long Island, NY(Zone 7a)

Victor, I got Aconites, Delphinium, Heliopsis, Shooting Stars liatris, Scented Phlox pink and Checker plant Sidalcea. (The Phlox I'm potting because I like 'transportable' fragrance!) ☺

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Nice!

Eastern Long Island, NY(Zone 7a)

...Speak of the devil! UPS just delivered 3 JP roses I ordered! Oy Vey!!

Eastern Long Island, NY(Zone 7a)

...Guess I'll be busier than I thought!
- Just off the truck.

I'm using Liquid Fence for the first time, if it works I'll buy tulips.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

All the liquids are basically the same. Minor differences. Liquid Fence works pretty well. They do get used to anything after a while so you then have to rotate products as they will smell / taste a bit different. Nothing but a fence is bulletproof.

belleville, NJ(Zone 6a)

Victor has a bulletproof fence. It came with the property.

Eastern Long Island, NY(Zone 7a)

Ge, I took out 3 junipers that were against the side of my garage, (I don't know why the prev owners planted them so close...) anyway I have a similar situation on that side. I'd be interesting to see what works for you there. ☺

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Lots of options there. Plenty of smaller shrubs that will not block those windows. How many hours of sun does it get, Jo Ann?

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

The space is 35 feet long and 5.5feet deep. Believe me there is a long wish list that includes, Tree Peony, Balloon flower, Iris, Narcissus, Lavender, Fall aster, anemone,Acanthus,Goatsbeard,Monks hood, lots of annuals until the "kids" can stand on their own.
I pretty much think there is an accumulitive number of sun hours to call it SUN especially at the near end,but I will treat it like part sun part shade.
It is a sloping southwest side of the house. Thanks everyone for your advise.
I'm new to chatting but this week I've learned a lot about navigation.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

I have a similar area that I cleared two falls ago behind my garage. It's a mixed bed of shrubs, perennials and ground covers. Some on your list, like lavender and goatsbeard, have very different moisture/drainage requirements, so just keep that in mind.

Eastern Long Island, NY(Zone 7a)

Do you have a shot of it VG? ☺

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

I believe I won't be able to plant all that I have on my wish list just because of their different needs, the list is what I had to leave behind at my old house. Thanks for the heads up on that. I don't believe the lavender will be happy on that side of the house, the front is full sun all day and can support a lavender.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

I'll check, WC. It's still young and I can still fit a few more things in.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Surprisingly, I don't have many pics of it. This is not the best view - but it's on the left. The plants include cryptomeria, deodar cedar, physocarpus - one red and one yellow, peonies, Asiatic lilies, gernaium Rozanne and 'Pocomoke' crape myrtles (they stay small - under 2 ft).

I like the rock border, I'm going to have to buy some rocks! I planted Sedum Angelina in the front under a juniper and it survived the winter and is 'taking off' I'm going to get a few more and try them as a ground cover in my garage area, Thanks for the pic! - you've given me some ideas! ☺

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

WOW you have a beautiful selection of evergreens in the whole landscape.
The garden has a nice visual rythm to it.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

I love sedum. 'Dragon's Blood' is a great one for the front of sunny beds.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Thanks. My property extends to a few feet beyond the blue spruce. The gold tree in front of it is golden dawn redwood, which is a deciduous conifer.

Eastern Long Island, NY(Zone 7a)

I recognized the redwood right away! ... it must be bare now with plenty of buds.

Would you know which are the shrubs #1 & #2 in your pic?? ☺

Thumbnail by WaterCan2
Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Sure - #1 is a large azalea I inherited. #2 is the gold physocarpus I referred to.

Eastern Long Island, NY(Zone 7a)

Ahhh, thanks! ☺ That IS a big Azalea!

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Yes, I don't hack it back like many people do. It is in its more 'natural' state. Here is a better photo of the physocarpus in bloom.

The flowers last a long time and turn a nice shade of pink. That's why I put these lilies nearby.

Very nice, I like the wild state of the shrubs also, it looks more natural. I just checked Avant Gardens for the ninebark (that's where I got the sedum- they have them and the ninebark too!! - I'm off surfin' ! Thanks again for the pics!! ☺

The Monadnock Region, NH(Zone 5a)

Very nice, Victor. It's almost zen like.
