Celaya, Mexico(Zone 10a)

Lots of very nice pics folks.
Last weekend I was out to get some shots of Great Gray Owls that had been spotted in the area but they eluded me while I had my camera in hand :(
Today I got some glimpse of Great Horned Owls, a female incubating eggs and a male some distance off getting some sleep for the hunt of the upcoming night. Didn't get any clear shots of either one but I'll show them anyways :)

Here the female in the nest ( well at least the "horns" are visible )

Here the male in a cedar tree, very hard to spot even though these guys are huge.

common name for Thuja occidentalis is Eastern White Cedar

Very nice pics PC!! I would love to see any type of owl!!

Nichols, IA(Zone 5a)

PanamonCreel, It's still an incredible shot of both!! Wow! You are so lucky!

Celaya, Mexico(Zone 10a)

Thanks, it helps when you go on a field trip with a local owl expert :)

In the same park there is an feeder area that was incredibly busy this morning, I guess they where filling up before the snow storm passes through (which it does right now).
The c. Redpoll was taken at that area.
Here some more:

Hi PanamonCreel,

From Standardized Plant Names, ed.2, 1942. American Joint Committee on Horticultural Nomenclature; Harlan P. Kelsey and William A. Dayton. J. Horace McFarland Company, Harrisburg, Pa.:

Quoting:
The common name Cedar is widely misapplied, especially to species and varieties of Chamaecyparis (Falsecypress; Whitecedar; Yellowcedar), Cryptomeria (Japanese-cedar), Cupressus (Cypress; Whitecedar), Juniperus (Juniper; Redcedar), Libocedrus (Incensecedar), and Thuja (Arborvitae; Redcedar; Whitecedar). This illustrates the importance of the principle adopted by the Joint Committee that a common name properly belonging to one genus should not be used for a plant of another genus, except as part of a compound word; thus for Chamaecyparis thyoides, Falsecypress is correct, not White Cedar.

Lovely pics PC!! The American Goldfinch looks quite bright yellow and that one Mourning Dove looks like she's smiling at you!

Marilyn, wonderful shots of the male Cardinal.

Celaya, Mexico(Zone 10a)

Resin, I don't really care what this Joint Committee says.
Thuja occidentalis is here called Eastern White Cedar, Northern Cedar or Swamp Cedar and that is what I will use when referring to it in this Bird related thread. Maybe a few more generations and the name will change with the "commoners" to what that joint committee wants but I highly doubt it.

Thanks Pelle
Nice Cardinal Marylin, here one from the "colder section of NA" ;)

Hi PanamonCreel - it really doesn't help to call something what it isn't! Think how confused everyone would be if I called that bird in your photo a Crossbill. Exactly the same happens when you call something a cedar, that isn't a cedar.

Here's what a cedar branch looks like:

OH man, not the juniper/cedar/arborvitae discussion again.

I say, it's an Evergreen.

Here's a fat robin, though out of focus.

It's the harsh winds of March ablowin' here - soon we'll be in the lusty month o' May - then what! LOL

Celaya, Mexico(Zone 10a)

Agree Mrs_Ed, for discussions like that there is the Trees and Shrub forum and I'm not interested in that discussion anyways.
