ultimate garden fantasy

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

What is your ultimate garden fantasy? If you could do anything (or have it done for you)in your garden or yard what would it be?(Keep it clean)
I would love a major backyard revamp done from a new patio, to a waterfall/pond feature, trees brought in to give me some shade, winding paths through a shaded area, a wildflower area and oh yeah, I guess, a little area for the kids to play(off to the side). Maybe if I do a little each year I'll be done in 30 years.

Southern, CT(Zone 6a)

I like your ideas Jen. i would also like a pergola and to create more "garden rooms"

Medway, MA(Zone 5b)

I have the best lot for a fantasy garden! It's on a small hillside, and has half a dozen "rocks" (or boulders) for accent.

I, also, would have the winding path (am slowly working on that), with every square inch covered in plants - minimum grass. Benches throughout, for viewing purposes. A gazebo with a ceiling fan is a must. No screens in it because my fantasy garden would be mosquito-free!

Definitely a cottage-garden, with roses, delphs, foxglove, etc., everywhere. And picket fences with arbors! A waterfall/pond feature is a must. Somewhere on the lot there would be a secret or sunken garden.

Also, the perfect garden shed that is big enough to store all the necessities, but small enough to be cozy. It will have a ceiling fan, electricity, and running water. Maybe a toilet, too!

My garden would be deer and woodchuck free. And I would have free access to landscaping services!

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Back yard revamped with a pond, and stone walkways and a outdoor fireplace also of stone. I'd like to take a few acres and make an friut orchard too. I have the land....it's the $$$$

Medway, MA(Zone 5b)

That's my problem too, Celeste! "Show me the money!"

Southeast, MA(Zone 6b)

A big tall fence all the way around to keep out bambi and friends would be #1 on my list. Then large evergreens placed strategically for privacy. Garden paths through a shaded garden with lots of hosta and trillium and lady slippers. A gazebo on the hill and a pond at the low level of the yard with a wildflower meadow blending into flowering shrubs. Now if I could hit the lottery it might be more than a fantasy.

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

The $ issue I think is the #1 consensus.

Springfield, MA(Zone 6a)

I would have about three acres of land on the lee side of Vancouver Island (zone 8)with sloping land so I can make broad terraces with winding walkways, gazebos, fountains, ponds, etc. And I would have Madrona trees! I would have different garden styles as well- most of the gardens would be English cottage with lots of roses, foxgloves, delphiniums, pinks, etc. But I would also have a "tropical" garden, a zen-like Japanese garden and pond, a herb garden, and a formal garden.

I had it all worked out - but someone in Georgia won instead :-)

Winston-Salem, NC(Zone 7a)

I would have at least 40 acres with winding paths, garden rooms, secret gardens, themed spaces, huge natural pond and stream, laburnum walks, pergolas, arbors and trellises draped in roses, clematis, wisteria, morn. glory, rose gardens, iris fields, orchards, potager, a labrynth, mini stone henge, a couple barns for my horses and other animals that i will have. etc.etc.etc. Do i sound like i have been thinking about this for ever?

Springfield, MA(Zone 6a)

Gee - 40 acres . . . ummmmm . . . well, with appropriate numbers of staff on hand, I think I could swing it. Just need that winning ticket (no rich relatives from whom I can inherit a small fortune).

I like the labrynth and mini stonehenge. :-)

Winston-Salem, NC(Zone 7a)

Im crazy when it comes to gardening. yes, i would need a full time garden crew. I guess i better get rich!

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Good thread, Jen! I've been thinking of starting a similar one for a while. It was going to be, 'If you could have one gardening wish...'

Mine is similar to the others - WAY more space. Many acres. I would garden on a few of them and leave the rest natural. It would have a stream running through it and no sign of civilization anywhere!

If it had to be limited to my existing garden, it would be lots of money to make all my ideas reality and of course, no deer!

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

Ha, beat ya to it!
This is my idea of the waterfall feature, anyone ever peruse hgtv, rate my space? Some of these yards/gardens are amazing.

Oh flowerjen, RateMySpace is FUN! Thanks for the link.

Love everyone's ideas for their ultimate garden fantasy. What's interesting, at least in my case, is how I can start with a relatively simple fantasy of desiring a perfect cottage garden and in five seconds of thinking about it, it's grown to mini-Versailles!

But I think my beginning fantasy for Right Now in my garden would be a pond and a bench and wonderful plantings all around and dragonflies humming and . . . and I just want SPRING!

Maine, United States(Zone 5b)

My ultimate fantasy would also primarily be more space. I'm actually pretty happy with the contours and natural features with our yard, so I probably wouldn't be as happy with a flat, treeless lot or something like that. So I guess I'd just want a lot more of the same, with plenty of shade so that I could continue with hostas and other shade plants. I know that I have purchased more hostas that I will ultimately have room for, so that kind of bums me out, knowing that eventually I'll have to get rid of some. I'd like a huge hosta/woodlandy type of garden. And, maybe a bit more sun than I have now so that I could do more flowery things, too. And a perfect, soft lawn for my dogs to run around on would be nice, too.

Flowergirl, my husband would love a mini Stonehenge! I'd make one out of hypertufa, if we had the room for it, lol.

Columbia, MO(Zone 5b)

Hmmm, ultimate garden fantasy...

I want lots of good soil to build a garden palace made of many "rooms".

Fragrant/tactile garden. The kind where you could just walk around with your eyes closed and smell the roses and scented geraniums and pet the lambs ears.

Herb garden to cook with and make wonderful potpourri with. Have to have some patchouli!

BIG water garden with koi and lilies and lotus and those huge leaved gorgon and victoria lilies. Have to have some waterfalls!

A nice cutting garden that always has something blooming.

And lots of interesting paths with nooks and crannies to tuck in special surprises like a fairy cottage or special birdhouse.

And of course the bucks to actually make it a reality -----------

(Zone 4a)

Oh wow this is fun.....I would love a nice screen in gazebo with a nice little waterfall in the garden beside it (I love the sound of trickling water).....I would have tall fences covered in blooms from various clematis.

Southern, CT(Zone 6a)

I have a small waterfall. I'ld like to extend a stream out of it. I need flagstone too!

Southeast, MA(Zone 6b)

Well you guys are really going for it. I love it. Add to my wish list two or three really strong helpers to do some of the heavy lifting. Another thing since this is fantasy, a whole garden without any unwanted rocks ant perfect soil for planting. Oh want a luxury those things would be. I would be very content in my own little paradise. :)

Hannibal, NY(Zone 6a)

I would like more mature trees, and lots of shady areas to garden in. My shade is now limited, but I have planted lots of trees. So someday......

Southern, CT(Zone 6a)

I would like more mature neighbors!

Hannibal, NY(Zone 6a)

My closest neighbor is 1/2 mile away, and mature. It's a blessing. And he has farm equipment! And he loves to use it!

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

Tetley, gotta watch walking around with your eyes closed you don't want to be petting any rose thorns by mistake!
Ngam-there's a good fantasy, some strong helpers, black hair with blue eyes(oh wait, that's another fantasy)

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

Another small fantasy, I wish I had room in my house to start more seeds.

Columbia, MO(Zone 5b)

Flowerjen, you are sooo funny. Now the black hair/blue eyes thing I could go along with though...... :^)

Southeast, MA(Zone 6b)

Jen you forgot the young with no shirt part of black hair/ blue eye , well it is a fantasy garden. :)

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Yes, that's a requirement of my Gardenettes.

belleville, NJ(Zone 6a)

i just want a garden of my own. i want to live in a house, where i can store things without being in the neighbor's way. And i want an area - patio, grass, i don't care - where i can sit in the sun. And a porch. Maybe two. i have serious porch lust. But to be able to entertain on the porch - have cookouts, etc...

Springfield, MA(Zone 6a)

Hey, Amy, come live with us! We have a huge Victorian home with an okay veranda, but just down the block is another great house with a fabulous front porch!

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Is veranda lust the same as porch lust? Amy didn't specify if she has front or back porch lust...

Springfield, MA(Zone 6a)

Well front porch is more fun 'cause you can chat with the neighbours :-)

Southern, CT(Zone 6a)

I went to high school with Veranda Lust. She was very popular.

Milton, MA(Zone 6a)

Ohhhhhh! Just saw this thread. Any dream garden has to be specified, with or without MS. Because if it's in my body, then my space is ok, I'd maybe tear down the neighbors' houses and install a privacy woods and a greenhouse and staff quarters and so forth. And remodel my house most drastically so I have a porch so I can meet the neighbors (if i allow any to remain). And extend the back - I guess we'll be tearing out a few houses back there too. But I need a LOT of help just implementing the ideas I have now. (Not these fantasy ideas, the real ideas.) I'd like to be able to swim year-round without getting cold and without hurting DH's back - but that's not really a garden thing. It should smell wonderful and the staff should all be happy. xx ♫ Carrie

South Hamilton, MA

Any garden fantasy would definately not have mosquitos and an automatic weeder.

Milton, MA(Zone 6a)

True, no mosquitoes, yellowjackets or dandelions! xx, Carrie

belleville, NJ(Zone 6a)

Veranda Lust sounds like a drag queen with a southern drawl.
Ideally, i'd like a front porch and a back porch. But a back deck or patio would be ok too.
Though if we're really getting crazy, i want one that wraps around the front and at least one side.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

And a guard to pace back and forth?

belleville, NJ(Zone 6a)

Now you're thinking of your place, Victor...

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Dave - I think I've heard of Veranda's sister, Wanda Lust.

Amy - an old aunt on my ex's side had a huge gorgeous Victorian house facing the water in Spring Lake, NJ with a three sided porch - heavenly.

belleville, NJ(Zone 6a)

heeheehee - i love "Wanda Lust"!
i think my all-time favourite is Bertha Venation.

i love victorian houses...
