Is it Snowing, Where You Are?

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

Thanks y'all. The snow was nice, but glad it didn't stick around. The iris didn't skip a beat after they were dusted and it dipped to freezing for a short time.

It is a different story with the frogs, they will be taking cover until spring is here for good. LOL!

Very cute Sheila.

Waaaaa. It is warm enough to open the windows here today.
Friday night it was 27 degrees. Just walked around the yard and all the little seedlings are black and bent over. Lots of plants are just mush today. Went all winter without damage and now a lot of dead and dying.

Josephine, Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

Yes, it is heart breaking, they will come back but it will take a lot longer.
This crazy weather is really aggravating.

Oh, LouC. I'm so sorry. Do you need some seeds? I don't know if I have what you like, but I'm willing to look through my stash for you.

Desoto, TX(Zone 8a)

You are so sweet and thoughtful. The worst thing is the climbing nastursum. Seed packets from HD. Will wait a few days and if they don't perk up will just go purchase another pack of Burpees. Tomorrow will replant the pole beans and snow peas. They are washed up on the top of the ground.
The EE's were early all by themselves. They are mush but they still have another chance. The purple wandering jew was another that had come out early, all burned and dead now. Who knows about their roots. Most of the plants were responding to early warm ground. 27 degrees for several hours changed that. Will mostly have to wait and see. Thank you for your generous offer.

Isn't that just TEXAS PLANTS for you??? I told the Lantana and Pineapple Salvia and Indigo Spire that coming up in late February was a mistake. But would they listen to me?? No! And so one short span of 27 degrees turned them all to mush. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that those particular things are just "shocked" and not actually dead.

Carla

My goodness, ya'll were hit hard. I'm in a colder zone and didn't have damage this time. The snow didn't reach here till the next morning. I think that saved a lot of things. Didn't even faze seedlings I had put out a few days before. I didn't even have time to protect them...too busy making a makeshift shelter for the dogs. Usually we let them in the basement on cold nights, But as luck would have it they all had a run in with a skunk the night before...no way were they coming into the house!

Desoto, TX(Zone 8a)

We've done the skunk thing twice and we live right in the middle of suburbia...thing is we have a pet door and both times it was the middle of the night. They ran right in to us and we were sound asleep. The tomato bath didn't work. Nothing worked. I sympathize with you and the babies. Oh goodness, a Great Dane that has been skunked...

Christi

LOL.I can just see your babies running to you... to save them.

Hi,
This is my first post here, but I have a wonderful de-skunk concoction. Mix equal parts of liquid dish soap (dog shampoo would work too) baking soda and hydrogen peroxide. Soap up the dog and let the lather stay on for at least 5 minutes. Rinse and repeat. This did give the black hair on my dog red highlights, but did away with the skunk scent mostly. We could still smell it a little when he got wet. I could never convince my dog that skunks were not just kitties that needed to be sniffed!

Hi Pam in Texas! I tried something similar and used a vinegar rinse. It worked better than tomato juice and cheaper too.

and don't we know which end they like to sniff! LOL

Welcome to DG, Pam. Always nice to meet another gardener. Thank you for the skunk recipe! Lol, at the kitty sniff'n. Baby skunks sure are cute too...from a distance.

Desoto, TX(Zone 8a)

Welcome to DG, Pam. Thanks for the recipe. Still have 3 dogs and the possibility of another "skunkin" is always on the horizon. Glad to have you.

Boy, this thread started with snow and today couldn't be more beautiful!

hello, pam in texas. hope to meet you at one the round-ups. we have a development instead of skunks so i prob. won't need that recipe. lol.

I would love to have the skunk recipe. I heard they taste like chicken. lol Or at least they will eat my chickens if not kept at bay. We caught a skunk in the coon trap last year. When I saw it, I was dreading having to shoot it as all I have is a shotgun and some 22's. As I was walking in the house I told my wife and son and they both wanted to shoot it. I was glad until they came back in the house. It shot first, but not too bad.
We had alot of snow here also. It took us 4 hours to drive from Denton to Gainesville to check on a foreclosure assignment, as they come out on the week of the first Tuesday of the month in Texas. Cars were in ditches everywhere. My wife took some great photos. I will try to get her to post them if she gets time. I am photo eliterate(maybe spelling eliterate also). Take care, Mike

Welcome Pam and hello to you too Mike. Haven't seen either of you on the thread for the plant swaps or round-ups being planned this year. Make sure to attend one if you can. They are a blast and you will go away with new friends, full of good food, and free plants.
There is a "sticky" (stays in place) at the top of the Texas Gardening Forum with links to read all about when, where and what is going on.

Thank you, Pod. Been holding on to the seeds and today seemed just the right time.

You're welcome! I am so excited to find new growth on many of the plants. I haven't done seeds yet and need to get with the program!

Desoto, TX(Zone 8a)

The way you prepared and sent the seed was so special. At this time, I have nothing to share. Hoping that by Fall that will change. I am ashamed to accept so much and not reciprocate.

cat, is that a normal temp for you at this time of year? that is scaring me to death.

Deep East Texas, TX(Zone 8a)

LouC ~ Pulleeze don't feel bad! I have been blessed many times over by many others. Someday, you will have the very thing I can't live without and you will share. Not to worry ~ besides when all those seeds deliver so many plants and more seeds, you will be growling at me! LOL

Mamajack ~ do you not like hot weather?

Fate, TX(Zone 8a)

well pod, 100 is o.k. but she's already 103 in mar. i just hate it when it's 110 for weeks at a time. it just zaps my energy. but i have to say that i can take 110 a lot better than 20.

Edinburg, TX

UGH! I had to work overtime today. It was hot outside! Wasn't too bad when I worked the air-conditioned superbooth processing incoming trucks but when I had to work the exit gate - having the door open and dealing with all the fumes and hot engines of the exiting trucks - well that wasn't much fun....but it sure beats hoofing it at the bridge processing cars and people!

On my way home I was checking all the bank signs and such. The one on the corner of my block registered 102 and the walgreen's across the street said it was 104. Even taking the average of 103 - it was still HOT!!! UGH!!! I am dreading the upcoming summer months...the worse is still yet to come! How does that figure into the scheme of things when it's still snowing in the north?

A little late for snow pictures, as it was in the upper 80's yesterday and 70's today.

What I hate is not knowing how to dress. It is cool when I leave the house so I want to put warmer clothes on but by noon I am wishing for less clothes. Fall is far easier, I can just keep a light jacket handy. Otherwise, I don't mind the warm.
