Is this a bird nest?

Mysore, India(Zone 10a)

Today I noticed this object hanging from a branch of the mexican hat shrub that has grown tall. It is made of white silky thing and the materials used here are dried flowers and little sticks I think. And I saw that opening there which seems to be the size of some tailor bird. Can anyone let me know what it is? It's just about 8-9 feet from the ground.

It sure looks like a nest but I am clueless so can't say for sure. What is the approximate size of it?

About 8 inches long.

Definitely looks like a nest to me. It looks like there is round opening in the upper right of the structure. This is where the bird would enter.

I agree with bird nest. no idea what kind of bird, you should watch it close and maybe get us a bird photo to go with it :)))

Mysore, India(Zone 10a)

Okay, I'll try to keep a vigil around it and be more watchful. I see plenty of those tailorbirds and sunbirds on that shrub. Since it overhangs the passageway, any human disturbance will make them fly away. Yet, the appearance of this nest just above the passage, surprises me. Yes, there is a round opening.

I'd say it's a will-be-a-bird's-nest . . . only part-built, so far!

So we must not interfere too much at this stage? Else, that bird family may shift?

Northumberland, United Kingdom(Zone 9a)

Yep! Only watch from a distance, so as not to disturb them.

Thanks Resin. Will do so.

Well, well! This morning - in fact, just a few minutes ago, I slowly moved in close to that nest. Lo and behold! I was presented with this lovely sight! It's a Sunbird for sure. That beak belongs to it. I stood still and used a flash to one of the two pictures I took. [And could not wait to upload - weekend holiday today] Luckily, he or she posed for the pictures before flying away with its call.

I like your new neighbor, Dinu, I'm sure they 're going to be good company. Very nice.

I only hope they continue to stay in my garden and bear with the occasional disturbances - we use that passage mostly to take in and take out the two scooters from behind the house. We are looking from the front corner to the back corner of the house - west. The opening of the nest faces west.

Cool Dinu...I'm looking forward to more pics of the progress!

Have taken a couple of closer shots this evening using flash. Will post them tomorrow.

That is fabulous!

A collage of 4 pics. It's the female probably staying in the nest to give warmth to the eggs. The male sunbird has a distinct purple throat. In fact, it goes by the name purple throated sunbird. This is seen taking a peep into the nest, probably to feed [?].

This is the male [father] searching for food to be fed. After peeping there, he went to that Jasmine shrub.

Dinu,
Those are great pictures. How lucky your are to have such a beautiful bird nesting so close by.

Probably their first in our premises. My artificial birdhouse was close to a flop! I think this nest is made up of cellulose that the fire ants used to build their nests and this must have picked up pieces from there. I'll get that pic of the fire ant nest shortly. It's like tissue paper. I even wrote on it!!

Mysore, India(Zone 10a)

This is the cellulose material I guessed above. I took a fallen off nest - the leaves of course have dried. I can write on it carefully with a pen!

The fire ant nest is seen here - look for the area above the letters DE in 'Eden'.

oh my word. In the TREE??

Fire ants in the trees???

Remind me never to visit India....

Mysore, India(Zone 10a)

That should not deter you! They bite only mildly.

Mild like a mosquito?

The fire ants in India are quite different from the South American fire ants that have invaded parts of the US.

Mysore, India(Zone 10a)

Only if the fire ant's nest is disturbed, they get aggressive. I've posted a pic in the BF the inside of a new big nest which I disturbed.

Last evening when I was watching this nest, I was so pleased to hear tiny little squeaks from it!!! The mom bird was not there, keeping watch. I'm amazed at watching this nest. It has withstood 4-5 days of heavy rain in the last 10-15 days. And to hear those little sounds from tiny little Sunbirds is so very heartening. It has pleased me. I'll keep watching this nest and for the little ones if they peep out like mom. It's such a soothing sight!

How cute! Thank you for the update. It will be interesting to see how long it will take for the little ones to fledge and leave the nest.

Dinu, i was JUST wondering what was going on with this nest. Thanks for the update.

Mysore, India(Zone 10a)

I'll follow it as long as possible without disturbing.
