lucky bamboo

Zanesville, OH

I bought some of the lucky bamboo that is sold in Lowe's and Walmart this time of year and wanted to cut it and root it in water to get many more. However, I've heard from a lot of people that doing that won't work. They tried it and it turned yellow and died. Anyone have this problem or know anything about it?

I read somewhere that it is only some sort of grass ...don't know much more than that other than if you stick a bit of grass in water it does not grow the way a cutting of a plant does.Good luck

So I googled and it said that it is a dracaena and needs reasonable warmth and they must remain in water ...the site also said just cut some stem and stick in water. Cold causes yellowing of leaves and possible rotting of the stem.

I've never tried it, but since they sometimes sell lucky bamboo growing in water, I would assume it would root in water (it can also be grown in soil...not sure whether cuttings work better in water or soil or if it doesn't matter)

I have also tried to cut the bottom-most part of the stem off, stick it in water, as well as the "mother" dracaena. The mother did fine, grew new roots, etc... but the cutting did turn yellow and died.

I would sure LOVE to know how to do this properly from anyone who has tried it and been successful! I have bought quite a few of these over time and would love to have more to share.

Below is a link to how it should be done:

I've done it many, many times with 100% success. I'm puzzled why you are having problems....the only thing I can think of might be the water you're using. Lucky Bamboos are finicky with their water and mine get nothing but bottled. Everytime the mama plant's stems get too tall I cut them off and put them in a vase with bottled water. That vase is actually getting too full so I'll soon have to start another one.

I have several lucky bamboo - and as long as I change the water weekly, and use water that has been sitting out for about a day, I have done so-so. They remain a mystery to me. I have read all the postings on lucky bamboo and still don't have my head around what makes them happiest. It seems even if you do everything "right" a few out of a bunch just won't like me!

But I like them. :) So I bought one of these beautiful twisted lucky bamboo, and I want to ensure it makes it and hopefully thrives... but... see picture...

Any ideas on what would be causing this leaf to turn yellow? I have cut it off now (just the yellow part) but I noticed there's now another leaf that's not looking too good. :(

Thanks in advance to anyone...
