Moroccan asagao #1/2008

Aschaffenburg, Germany

Hi folks,

Morning glory season is in full swing here now.

This is the first new one to me I found this year. I am sure the experts among you will know its name...so I am greatful for any tips in the righ direction.

Note: This is not a new fancy one, these are just some sun spots that came through the grass when I was trying to shoot this photo with the sun coming from an angle...

Very unusual serrated leaves, completely untypical of what I have seen in MGs so far...

At first glance it reminded me of cucumber leaves, but these are indeed the leaves of this morning glory.

Hi Martin - Looks like you most likely have
Convolvulus althaeoides
http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/showimage/11857/

There are many species within the genus of Convolvulus that can look very(!) similar with relatively minor structural variations...

Let's see how the seedpods develop and what the seed characteristics are like...

Dutch version of Convolvulus althaeoides bloom from plant file seems simpler, the leaves of the Moroccan one are hairier. I was amazed when I revisited the location yesterday that the plant covered a whole area almost like a weed. It seems quite a hardy type of convolvulus because this patch will be exposed to scorching sun in about 4-6 weeks, so it will be interesting to see if it goes to seed and will be gone or will persist through the summer (somewhat unlikely with the amount of leaves it has it would need a lot of water...).

Gofast, thanks for posting a specie picture, from so far away from this forum. Does this one have a large underground storage organ.? Frank

So, fichilders, you are thinking of a sweet potatoe type...Need to check that out, could explain why its up and running in such a short time...or perhaps I missed it...sometimes we are blind till someone opens our eyes...

Martin - It is the leaf variability that I saw on your plants that helped me to the ID provided...

Enjoy your MG's...
