Sprouts and Seedlings 2008! Any pics to share?!

Cincinnati (Anderson, OH(Zone 6a)

A 2008 "Sprouts and Seedlings" photo thread--continued from the 2007 thread here:

http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/701931/

Hi, everyone-- looks like spring has sprung (for the moment here in Ohio, knock on wood) and it might be time for some DGers to start photographing their WS sprouts and seedlings and record them here. Everyone finds themselves with lost label containers once in a while, and these photos are so helpful and informative!

We'd love to see what you've got coming up (and don't forget to label and post your seedling photos in plant files, too. I'm not sure if the WS database is ready for sprout photos, yet).

I just looked into my containers today, and I don't have sprouts yet, but I do have one pic of sprouts from last year to post-- and I'm sure all of you can do better than these poor little unknowns, so let's see them?!!

Happy seed sowing, t.

There are only a few of the bronze gazania because there were only 4-5 seeds left in the packet . . .

These are from the seeds I collected from my yellow petunia last year. Since the yellow was a hybrid, I don't know what these seeds will turn out to be . . . maybe white, hopefully yellow, who knows?

Syrumani, great bunch of seedlings there! gives us northerners hope :0)

Bev - tell me about hosta. when did you start those, did you do anything special? I've never started them from seed before.

Nilwood, IL(Zone 5b)

This is my first try at this!! I just planted in 8oz clear cups with holes in bottom with seed starting mix. Wet the mix and sprinkled the seed on top and put very little mix on top and sprayed water to moisten. I put them in a tote and put then in my aquarium under light 24-7. I planted them the 6th of Jan. and they came up the 19th. I water from bottom about every three days about 1in and let them soak it up. I also have them in a south window and open curtians in the daytime to give extra light. Here is the set up. BEV

Hello everyone... been some time since i have been to Daves garden....I have not started any seeds yet but i have some sitting here, my son wanted to experiment with seed growing...he is 11.

In the past i have started my seeds and they have done lovely, but when i go to put them babies in the ground they usually do not make it... any tips on planting these babies in the ground??? They usually seems a little weak and gangly and then by the 2nd or 3rd day they are dead :(

Hello, Mercy. Welcome back! When you start your seeds, if you don't have a plant light or even a flourescent light to put them under, you want to put them in the brightest, sunniest window you have. If they are in a window, rotate them so they don't grow in one direction toward the light. You need a lot of light to keep them from getting those weak, gangly stems. Then when it is time to put them outside, they need to be 'hardened off'. This means you should put them outside for just a little bit at first, not in hot sun or wind, and bring them in. leave them out a little longer each day until they are used to being outside, over about 10 days or so. then plant them in some nice improved soil (add some compost and manure).

Winter sowing, by which we mean planting your seeds in an enclosed container of some kind and putting them right outside in the cold is fun, too. It would solve your problem because plants do not need to be hardened off and get plenty of light because they are outside. You get nice stocky plants with no weak stems. It's not too late in your zone to stick a few containers outside. here's an article to read to get you started

your son is at a fun age to do some seed starting and planting. have fun!

claypa! That's pretty exciting! Are your 'splish splash' outside or under lights?? I hope my WSed hardy geraniums sprout. I bought a packet from Thompson & Morgan and somehow I thought they wouldn't do a thing. Hope has returned. I never thought to collect seeds from my Splish splash I have in the garden. Is that what you did?

West Pottsgrove, PA(Zone 6b)

Yes, I agree, very exciting! I'm outside every chance I get looking at all the bulbs coming up and the WS containers...
They're outside on the front porch with all the other WS containers. I got the seed in a DG trade for some other geranium seeds I did collect (G. robertianum, some other G.'s). This year and last, the Geraniums were the first to sprout for me here.

I noticed these today (barely, they are TINY!!!) some goldenrod/Solidago that I don't know the name of. I've tried to get goldenrods going for years... last year I dug a clump from the side of the road and they did bloom here, but I'm not sure if these are seeds from them or another attempt.

I have been potting up all kinds of Poppies in the last few weeks. I'll have to take pics tomorrow in the daylight. Here is one of my Lupines that I transplanted today. I may not go back to lights inside except for tropicals.

dylan: Why pot up poppies? They'd be fine to plant out now. Less work.

Hello, this is my first stab at wintersowing, and I just had to share - despite the cold weather and TONS of snow that keeps falling where I am, there are seedlings in my jugs already! I ventured out to the garden today (through all the snow, which is still on the ground), just to make sure the containers hadn't gotten knocked over or anything - and wasn't I surprised to see something tiny and green and alive in there! Wow, wintersowing is amazing. :-)
