Online and catalog plant/flower orders

Ripon, WI(Zone 4a)

Every year I say I'm only going to order a few because of the amount of garden space available. Every year I order too many and half the time have to expand my garden space. Sometimes I dig up plants that aren't performing up to my expectations and give them to other people just to make room for the new ones.

So how do you determine how many plants to order? Do you have a budget, only order what you have room for, only order a few "gotta have" plants, can't resist a good deal or don't order from catalogs or online at all?

Just found your post.....sorry nobody has commented yet.

I am probably like alot of other gardeners. If I like it, I get it. THEN worry about where it's going to go, LOL! DH has gotten used to it....he just asks where I want the hole dug!

As far as budget, I really don't follow one. I always have a bit of extra $$ tucked away for something that I just can't pass up.

Now, this year I am trying my hand at seeds starting indoors (new one for me). Well, I think I went a bit overboard (surprise!). DH does not mind that they are on every available flat surface near the sunny windows. But the peat pots in the fridge on the shelf with the eggs....he's not too thrilled. He'll get over it, they only need to chill for 30 days.....

I make massive wish lists every single year out of the 20 or so catalogs that arrive and almost never get to order. Its really the strangest thing too. I will spend tons of money every where else but wont send out my orders for the stuff I really want. I think it may be because Its not right there in front of me. But a store puts stuff right in my face.

This year I swear that I will order some new irises. I love them to death. They are my favorite hands down and I still never buy any. Very weird. I certainly dont need anymore seeds due to trading and buying in stores. I have over 100 packets i bet.

I have no advice except for visualizing the space you have with what you want in it. Then get that and only that. And remember, no one person needs every tomoto or pepper that is offered in a catalog (although I usually put them all on my wish list, im psychotic though) hehe

Carole, you're very lucky that your DH helps you in the garden. Mine says, "It's your hobby" - but I still drag him out there to look! And he likes the fact that the more lawn I dig up for gardens, the less he has to mow.

Michelle, too funny! I also go through tons of catalogs and mark everything I'd like. Then I go through again and eliminate a bunch of stuff and end up sending very few orders in. But it's still fun to look.

Goldfinch........Read back on my thread......I didn't say DH helps me in the garden...he's resigned to the fact that no digging holes equals no dinner, LOL!

Great idea - never thought of using that angle!

It works! Also it helps if you angle things around so he thinks it was HIS idea to help!

Sometimes they're worse than kids, LOL.

That said, I would not trade him for anything in the world, he's the best!

Goldfinch4--I know what you mean !! I keep putting things too close together. I see something new and beautiful, and put it on my "must have list". Now I HAD to put myself on a budget ! (smile)
