good morning :)
woke up to lots of little salpiglossis babies this morning!!!!! from the 2007 seed not from the Martha Stewart 2003 seeds, at least yet anyway
Join Us! Seed Swap Seed Starting & Conversation #5
Oh wind, that reminds me I got some of the Kew Blew Salpiglossis I wanted to try guess I should go ahead and start that this weekend, does it grow very fast under lights do you know I grew the chocolate a couple of years ago but don't remember how fast it grows this one is going to get pretty tall so I'm really wondering how fast it will grow under lights. How long did it take them to germinate? It says 14-30 days but I don't believe it lol
Lea-I am wanting seeds of that next year, so I hope you have them for the Piggie swap#2!!;)
I hope to have some for the next swap from what I remember of the chocolate they put out a lot of seed :) Remind me about the time to collect seed and I'll put a pack up for you :) I can't wait to see the blue on it if it is intense as the chocolate, I wanted some chocolate but didn't get any but I think I have enough seeds anyway lol
Someone needs to save me some seeds from the whopper green pepper I seem to have lost my stash or something but that's alright I did sow some reg. peppers but would like to have some for next year lol
I can't beleive we are already calling seeds for next year!!LOL
I think I started that on the last thread lol Never too early lol Oh, that was that seed that Suzy had that was weedy lol
I'm getting ready to transplant some kong and limelight coleus and I've seen on here where some people put about three of them in a three inch pot would that keep them from growing as fast or make them grow faster? I'm trying to figure out why they do it in those instead of the 6 packs? Of course you wouldn't have as many 6 packs that way maybe that's why they are doing it?
Oh Robin, how is your back, I hope you are up and about this weekend we miss you!!!
Morming All,
It has been snowing here off and on for the last 16 hours. Jeesh! No sledding or skating here... ... just sowing.
I worked on my herb garden last night and am almost finished. Can anyone lay claim to a packet of seeds labeled "Rosemary Mint?" It has no DG name and no other info except that it's mint, and I'd like to know a bit about it before planting.
As my babies are entering adolescence I'm beginning to wonder who can be pinched and who can't. Is there a general rule of thumb on that?
La seems like Suzy said something about pinching I'll see if I can find it don't hold your breath though lol I'm always stuck on what to pinch and not to pinch too! And always afraid I'm going to hurt my babies when I do it lol
I don't know anything about a rosemary mint sounds interesting :)
Hiya Lea. Thanks. There is so much valuable information in these threads, but it takes a mind far more organized than my own to find it. I've got to remember to start using the tags!
The rosemary mint does sound interesting, but I couldn't find anything when doing a search last night. But then again it was really this morning (about 5:00) and I was so sleepy that I didn't look that hard. But the good news is that I am finished WSing. I think. Um maybe.
:-P
La, I'm soo far behind on my WS and now I have soo many seedlings to transplant what is a girl to do, think it's going to be a few late nites on doing jugs after I can get some more dirt, can't get out right now because of the snow and it's killing me because I have three full bags of a pro mix like in the back of the truck but it's frozen! It's never frozen out there before this year has just been colder than usual lol I have extra dirt in the house but have to save that for transplanting and doing more trays.
Most of the seeds that I got without a name I think were just seeds left over from planting from other people that didn't have names on it so someone might not remember having that rosemary mint :)
I couldn't find anything on pinching but you can do a search on the forum search and see if anything comes up there, I tried lol Like you said there is so much information on here and if you don't make a note of it when someone says it it's lost lol
Oh man there goes the kids sleding in the field have to go out there and tell them where to go up there, I'm afraid they will go over my baby trees and shrubs! Oh no!!!
I just did a search and it looks like there are all kinds of threads on pinching. .. . Off to do some serious reading
hi lalajane! the salpiglossis I have was from you and it only took 6 days to germinate!
I saw the kew in T&M's catalog and wanted to try it. I also want to try the chocolate too! I hope they grow good for you LeBug, do you think they would come true from seeds?
it is so windy and lots of heavy rain here
Wind that was very pretty in my garden last year....I hope it does well for you!
I went on a search and discovered that the rosemary mint came from Starlight. When you get your computer woes straightened out can you give me a brief description of what I can expect from the seed Star? Both appearance and flavor would be fantabulous!
OK I'm back :-P
Who has grown Poached Eggs? Has it been invasive for you? I have the Spanish Omelette Mixed...it sure looks pretty, but I don't want to fight them.
Isn't poached eggs an annual? Does it reseed that much? I tried to grow it one year with no luck so I've never grown any.
Wind I'm not sure if it would come true or not there were a lot of people trading the chocolate and never heard complaints so guess it will?
It's nice out right now, the sun is out and not sure how cold but just going from house to house it's not bad lol The calm before we get 3-4 more inches tonite :)
Well, I started 6 different types of snapdragons yesterday. Today I potted up 29 lavender supercascade petunias (I probably need 10!) and 10 blue supercascade petunias (had better control of the seeds!) I also winter sowed a bunch of stuff, went to costco and bought a backage of 150 16 ounce plastic cups to help with winter sowing over Spring break.
I am going to have wayyy too many plants. :-)
I like the suggestion someone had about donating them to churches, schools, what about retirement homes....or I see signs sometimes on the side of the road for plants & veggies that says free and they are out on a table of some sort....
My extras will go to neighbours that help with the new garden on the terrace :-)
Seandor, I've got petunias out the wazoo too! LOL Debateing if I'm going to pot them all up, I have two different purple ones (a bunch of each) then the pink doesn't want to germinate I wanted about 5 of those and so far only have two, they were all planted at the same time lol
well at least you have a home for them-that's good after all the care you will give them...
I have no clue what I will do with my extras-maybe I will have to call around-I really shouldn't have that many xtras-I just sowed what I wanted, but a few more in case not all germinated...
I have the silver wave petunias I have yet to plant-I have 14 semi circles edging my walkway with tulips & grape hyacinths in & what I would like to do is get the hoop supports and put them in those spots, & have the petunias going up through the hoops to create a kind of cascading affect...does nayone think that will work or even look good?? When Dryad is felling better, I will have to get her opinion too...
I called my church the last time I had a lot of plants to get rid of because the preacher asked me to grow some flowers for them one year but didn't want to 'buy' them, but they didn't want to plant them either they wanted me to???? I don't even go there dad does. They don't even help him to the car when I pick him up and they want me to plant the plants, I'm sorry I'm not going to do it :) They are welcome to the extra plants but I'm not planting them too, I have enough to plant :) I call my friends then they don't pick them up and I end up taking care of them all summer too so I'm trying to learn to throw them away, trying, not sure how that's going to work out this year lol
Isn't part of going to shurch about all of them being from one family unit and taking care of each other?? No offense to your dad, but that doesn't seem like a very giving that lives what they preach...not even helping him to the car-I do things like that for strangers I see, and they know him!! That kinda ruffles my feathers!!
I just sowed my petunias yesterday...I hope I'm not too late. Fairy, that Tidal Wave Silver will take over and sort of climb up anything you have for it, including shrubs, so don't worry...it sounds good like you have it planned. Yes pinch it.
Pinch everything. BUT not things that you know you shouldn't, Cannas, Lilies, and things that come up as a single stalk and are supposed to be a single stalk with a terminal flower. Yes, pinch dahlias 2x. Anything yo want to be bushy.
There are a lot of things, like Emilia, and I think Scabiosa & Daisies whose flowers come up from basal foliage with a long flower stem. Those don't get pinched as seedlings, but I don't think you'd even be tempted since the foliage is so short. But if you do pinch them it won't matter. Trailing plants like Campanulas get pinched, too.
Oh, my friends are the worst on picking things up, too! I'm hoping to pawn extras off on Dryad, but there probably won't be many because I pushed back my Florida vacation from January (the swap took a lot of time :) to March. Mr. Clean will be tending the plants, so I already know there will be heavy losses.
Suzy
My thoughts exactly Fairy that's one of the reasons I quit going to that church a long time ago, when I was younger, everyone jumped to help eachother out and we have new neighbors move in here I always go over when they are doing something and I try and help and they kind of look at me like why are you here, people just aren't like that anymore around here, the country used to be the friendliest place to live but I miss my neighbors in town, I have worked so hard to get these people around here to be friendly and it shouldn't be that way, people in town were a lot friendlier and would do anything for you, times have changed! There is a lady above us that passes every Sunday when dad is getting in the car for me to take him to church and not once has she asked if he would like to ride with her, the preacher always says to dad he's going to pick him up and take him out for coffee just to talk and visit, well dad is still waiting and he doesn't forget that either!
I'm hoping to pawn some extras off on you all when you get here Suzy lol That might make up a little for your honey watching your plants for you, I cringe to think about that lol Maybe you can bribe him to really watch them?
I put different colored post-it notes on the pots -- so a yellow one might be to water Monday and Thursday, but a pink one might be Mon, Wed and Friday. Each post it has to say exactly what to do, "all cells in this flat: water Monday, Wednesay, Friday, Sunday."
If the post-it falls off, or isn't clear as a bell, he won't water it at all, and presumably doesn't even see that the seedlings are dying. Oh, well, the funniest thing is that last year it was really nice of him to babysit (in APRIL!!! with a million plants inside and out!!!) and I didn't complain one little bit, so this year he says, sure. no problem because he thought he did a real good job. LOL!
Oh yes, when they think they did a good job that is encouragement enough to get them going the next time, sounds like everything will be fine Suzy just have a great trip! Now what are we going to do without you! lol How long will you be gone?
I don't think my DH would do any of that!! You are lucky that if you put up a note he will actually read it!!LOL DH apparantly is illerate when it comes to notes I leave!!LOL Hw always says what note?-the only success I have had is to leave it either on his cigs or a can of beer in the fridge!!
Ah . . . . the secret of my sucess! DH had to take care of my dahlias when DD and I went to BC for 5 weeks. He cared for them from the very first little blossom, through the heat of the summer, and watched HUGE Kelvin Limelight blossoms bend the plant in half. He beat off bugs, had to stake them, etc.
Secretly, I think he was THRILLED by his accomplishment, and has loved Dahlias ever since.
The next year he dug up 1/3 of his lawn so I could have the fragrance garden!
LOL so cute about your notes.
We are going to CA March 26 (only for 5 days because I can't bear to be away from my seedlings longer than that) and I 'm already fretting about my seedlings. I'm hoping to get them as organized as possible and on timers, etc. and hopefully the wintersown seeds outside won't be up yet--but who knows...?
I've had a whole bunch of the Japanese Morning glories sprout today. I thought they would take weeks.
Our snow (12 inches) here is lovely. The birds are crazy for the feeders. A nice day for cuddling up.
Suzy your planned trip to FL and the concern about your DH tending the little plants reminds me that I hate to leave in the heat of summer because I can't trust many people to water and know when and how much. My oldest DD is good to do it but she is so busy , my youngest has a hard time with her own pots. the first year we toldher to water them often and every morning before going to work she would pour a big bucket on them even if they had just been rained on and wondered why they looked puny. They improved when her DH took over the wateringLOL. In the love of gardening that apple fell a long way from the tree.
Whoa! 12" is a lot of snow!!!
INdyNan, My kids don't like dirt or bugs. :((
