There's a thread about "too many plants". I'll find it and put a link here. I feel you might love the look as much as I do.

Oh, I'm sure he will. Thom, this was an odd situation, because most of us assumed the poster was a woman but when we hadn't heard from "her" in such a long time someone googled the username and found out that it was a he.

Now, he never said anything one way or the other, it wasn't until we got to worrying about "her" that we started referring to "her" in the third person. I just thought it was a riot the way the Container Garden Forum was all up in arms to have Dave reveal "her" snailmail address so someone could go check on "her"! Oh well, different strokes for different folks.

Pirl - thanks for the "too many plants" link. The first pic had depth & texture to it, while the winter shot of the same space was so stark. I enjoyed the path to the front door. I'm sure she had room for more...
I, too, get jazzed about other people gardening. Can't imagine why someone would critique another's use of colour/plant choices, but I responded to a snarky comment about orange by devoting an entire garden to red/orange/golden yellow. It was my attempt at gentle retaliation. I like all colours, and was missing out on LOTS of plants that don't come in pink, (which was her colour preference).
I grow plants for their sheer enjoyment, and for the Bees & Birds.
Neither Bees nor Birds have filed any complaints, so I will continue to garden as I please. Besides, I find it somewhat offensive when folks want to impose their "garden rules and esthetic policies" on others.

Pirl...I just went to the link...I tried doing it last night, and the link wasn't working for some reason. The funny thing, every last one of those plants I have grown on my own front porch at one time or another.
The one thing I did/will pick up, and use, is the Persian Shield and the dark leaved begonia with the silver swirl in it (I know it's not escargot, will find it though)...that is a great combo of near black, dark purple, and silver, I LOVE IT.
That's pretty much how I want my "tropical" deck to look. I almost hope the order I got from Buried Treasures lives, that way, I'll have double the amount of plant material when they reship. In another week or so, is when I will start to pot up my elephant ears. I know I touched base on a thread awhile back, my luck with elephant ears to get huge and "TROPICAL"...lol...is to pot them up the first or second week in March.
They usually send down roots first, that's how I know they are growing, then they send up their first shoot...usually, from root to shoot, for me atleast, is anywhere from 3-5 weeks...3 for the roots to be coming out of the bottom of the 6-8" plastic pots I have them in, and 5 weeks for the first leaf to come out and start to unfurl.
Last year, everyone of my elephant ears where bigger, bolder, and more gaudy than any nursery in my area...the secret, is to start them early...atleast IMHO.
Thank you so much Pirl...I owe you oodles of compliments and thanks...first for Ensata, then for that link, and for the encouragement...thank you, thank you, and thank you!....You ROCK!

Katye - Score for you and your terrific attitude. I'd devote a thread to the orange but the offending person isn't part of our DG family. I'd rather have any color than bare gardens as she has. So glad you enjoyed the link, too. Isn't it funny how we assumed it was a female? Kattamos is a man - such talent! I loved the winter shot, too. The honesty of the thread made it special to me.

Thom - what a joy it is to know I "rock". You made an old broad's day! Thanks for the compliment. Now you have the same inspiration as that thread gave me. Of course your plants are better than the nursery. Their investment is only for selling, yours is for the love of plants and they're responding to you in great style. It's easy to see the results when people love their plants as opposed to those who "dump" a plant in a pot and then complain it doesn't look good or grow like the pictures show. You've also taken the time to learn how the plants grow and what to expect of them. Many people don't do that. Now, if you want to get in just a little bit more trouble with plants try Glassworks House and Rosy Dawn - both for coleus. Some are quite big. They'd add so much to that tropical look and cuttings can be held in fine style over winter, just try your best to avoid an east window. By March 1st they really want an east exposure and so will you or you'll be shocked at the proliferation of aphids.

This is important, Thom: when is your birthday? I have a few Rex begonias with astrological signs and hope I have one to match your sign. (That sounds better than the bar scene line of long ago: What's your sign?, doesn't it?)

His B-day is on his home page May 22nd...I believe that makes him a Gemini, he's right on the cusp!

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

I can deal with a cusp! Hope Thom can deal with Taurus:

Very pretty! I'm sure he can!!!!

Kershaw, SC(Zone 8b)

OMG...and that would do so well with Persian Shield...woohoo. Yes, I was born on the cusp between Taurus and Gemini...funny thing I tell people, those who follow Astro signs and their ilk, I always tell people I'm a stubborn schizophrenic...stubborn due to the Taurus, and schizophrenic due to the duality that Geminis usually have attributed to them.

Great plant...yea...now I have to go check that other nursery/grower out.

Saint James, MO(Zone 6b)

Never thought of myself as 'duality schizophrenic'! LOL

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Taurus is also the lover of home and you do exemplify that quite well.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Don't make me remind all of you that you're not the sign you think you are!! I've ordered from Glasshouse many times and Rosy Dawn last year and was very happy. Glasshouse charged a lot for shipping even before the oil prices went up.

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Oh but I am the sign I think I am...fits me to a tee!

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Sorry, but you're one month off!

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

But the one month off doesn't fit me to a tee so how can it be right?

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Sorry!

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

It's all good...im still going by Cancer no matter what ya tell me!

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

What is your Chinese year?

Medway, MA(Zone 5b)

Thom, I'm glad that you feel safe enough in our midst to vent about this important issue. It's good to be able to get it off your chest, see it in writing, get a few opinions, and then decide your course of action. Happy everything worked out well!

Medway, MA(Zone 5b)

P.S. - my 10-yr-old's b'day is 5/22 also!

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Victor, my Chinese year 1960, sign is the Rat...it's my year!

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

I'm a Tiger. You're the same as my brother. He was born Apr 13, 1960.

Fairfield County, CT(Zone 6b)

5/22 is my Dad's birthday!

Big birthday thread coming!

has anyone grown irisine? i remember seeing that at logees last October and really coveting some...

Milton, MA(Zone 6a)

Celeste, I think the twentyfifth (sp?) is the best day to be born on! I'm May 25, DD#1 is August 25, #2 was due on Feb. 25 (her DGGF's birthday) but stubbornly squirted out early so she could match her horrible father on the fourteenth. (He's 1-14.) x, C

Saint James, MO(Zone 6b)

WOOOOOO HOOOOO Carrie, that is mine as well!! And I was born on my Grandfather's B-Day even. And August 25th is my brother's and one of my best friends.

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Amy - Mischel's Greenhouse carries it. They're online.

belleville, NJ(Zone 6a)

is it difficult to grow?
i'm trying to make a white/silver/grey and black foliage area, and that would be super cool along with it...

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

I'd doubt it's hard to grow. Generally the plants Mischel's sells are easy to grow.

Misty, we must be soul-mates from another planet or something! I don't believe in things like this of course, but February has always been unlucky for me, good things happen in May (like birthday parties and presents, and graduating) and the 25th has always been a good day! And thank heavens it's not bad luck bad news February anymore! x, Carrie

Saint James, MO(Zone 6b)

HA HA HA Carrie, could have just been reincarnated to meet right here on DG, huh! :) I am getting to where I don't like my B-Days anymore, though! But I think I will keep the presents and parties, and graduated WAY too long ago! LOL Thankfully your unlucky month is over now!!! Tammy

Kershaw, SC(Zone 8b)

Victor, Year of the Tiger here also...I was born in '74. Seems like many people are May babies. It also means that the Fall going into Winter makes people think about other things than gardening...lol.

Milton, MA(Zone 6a)

Tammy, my mother is May 24 but that's nowhere near as nice as 25, it's a square (5 x 5) 25 x 25 = 125 which is also easy to remember, not like 256. If only someone had picked base 5 for something.

I used to dread my birthday - once I had kids, nobody seemed to notice ME anymore. My mother and I always shared a party. Then I married someone wonderful who thinks my birthday is the whole reason that the month of May was invented! Last year, in the second week of June, he said "is that what you're going to wear today? What if some friends drop by?" (Nobody has ever, not once, dropped by!) "Why don't you put on something nice? As if some friends were coming over. . . ." Yerp, a surprise party! Not where they all gang up and shout "surprise!", but still, it was pretty wonderful. I would have invited you, but I didn't know it was your birthday too! (And I wasn't in charge of the guest list!) x, Carrie

Saint James, MO(Zone 6b)

Hey Carrie, never thought of it that way! I like the way you think, girl!!!

Sounds like you lucked out in the Hubby department, for sure! To give you a surprise party 2 weeks after your birthday, just to make sure it stayed a surprise, is pretty darn special!!! We usually just go out and have the dinner of our choice and maybe get something special. Last year I got my eyebrows tattooed, so that was a lasting birthday present! LOL
This year we will have to have an "Internet B-Day Party" and celebrate together!!! Then we CAN be in charge of the guest list! :)

Milton, MA(Zone 6a)

Your EYEBROWS tattooed? When did you say you graduated? I've never heard of that, and MY husband would definitely NOT approve, hold my hand, go along with it, or anything! He hates it if I even get any stray hairs waxed..... oh Lordy, your EYEBROWS TATTOOED! X, Carrie

Saint James, MO(Zone 6b)

LOL Carrie! I didn't say when I graduated! :) My DH was there with me and didn't mind a bit. I have had very slim to none in eyebrows since my first child and was something I had wanted done for years, so I finally took the leap last year. Take a deep breath now so you don't go into shock! See, next time you want to get yours waxed just tell hubby that at least you aren't getting them tattooed! HA HA HA

Milton, MA(Zone 6a)

Well I have always had lovely eyebrows, maybe a bit too much of a good thing since I've been getting not older but better, LOL. It's a family site, you know? My brother (born in September!) had practically no eyebrows until he was about 12. x, Carrie

Saint James, MO(Zone 6b)

ok
