Wanna swap plants?? LOL That's all they have around here in the Walmart, Lowe's, Home Depot type stores are pink, purple, or white. I like those, but there's never any variety or anything different.
All those on that page are gorgeous, but I think this is my favorite: http://www.phals.net/violacea/06ph0035.jpg I'm a sucker for green in the flowers. LOL
What's blooming?
Oh my goodness ... That is a Gorgeous one! I must have missed it. I love the coloration in that bloom!
Hey, if you are serious I will definitely make a trade with you, either for the purple orchid or some other house plant .... let me know when the weather warms up enough in your area for shipping and it's yours!
Really, Lin? That would be great! I'd be more than happy to swap with you. I'd rather you have this purple Orchid since you like it so much more than I do. ;o)
I'll give you a yell when it's warmer. It was 20 yesterday morning. Brrr... I don't see how anything survives in cold like that. It's a heatwave today at 40, and raining of course. Haven't seen the sun more than once in the last week. I'm beyond ready for spring!
Kim, I didn't think I could grow Orchids, but I made a statement to a friend once, and they countered with how I'd be a good Orchid nut and sent me a few plants to try. I've only killed one so far. It was a mini, too, darling little thing...
We haven't really had any snow this year, just enough to dust the ground. I'd like to have 2 or 3 inches of snow. Just enough for the dogs to play in. LOL
It's a deal Amy! I've not repotted this one, it's still in the same plastic pot from the nursery. Look at all these roots. And, there's a new bloom stalk on it too that I just noticed. I will send it pot and all whenever you are ready.
Oh, don't you just hate cold weather that hangs around so long? We are at least in the 50's today ... but supposed to be getting warmer and back to mid-high 70's all next week. I just love photo's of snow and would love to visit someplace again some winter when there's snow but I couldn't stand the cold temp's for long. Boy, it just gets to the 40's here and my arthritis begins acting up!
Oh my, Lin! That's huge! This one isn't nearly that big... I'll send you some extra stuff, too. I repotted this one in orchid bark mix, but I don't like it - too difficult to keep it evenly moist, and I'll repot it into sphag before I send it to you. Yay! Now I REALLY can't wait for warmer weather!
We don't get enough snow for me to get tired of it. I don't enjoy playing in it like I did when I was younger, or when my kids were little, but I do love to look at it. And one of my dogs loves snow. She likes to catch snowballs in the air! LOL
Amy, you don't have to send anything besides the orchid, I don't care what size it is, I just love that purple bloom! I know a lot of folks swear by the orchid bark but a few years ago I repotted all my orchids into straight LFS. I couldn't keep them alive in the bark. I buy lots of the orchid bark to mix with potting soil for every other plant I grow but for the orchids I keep them all in just the spaghnum. They hang out on my deck and I just spray them with the hose whenever I'm watering all the other plants out there. And, every so often I fill a tub with water and orchid bloom booster and dunk them all. I have also watered on occasion with VF-11 when I'm using that for the plants on the deck.
I just popped in for a sec to find these gorgeous pics of orchids....................wow..........amy...........
Thanks, Lin for all your hard ID work..........
maybe nap time..........after standing in line forever in early voting
I'll repot it this weekend so it will have a little time to adjust before I send it to you. I have decided that's all I'm going to do with the orchid bark is mix it in with my Hoyas. The Orchids do best for me in sphag or lava rocks, depending on what type Orchid they are.
I've gotten so that I use the Better-Gro Orchid fert for all my plants. I've got a regular kind and the bloom booster kind. They don't have urea, so should be safe for the Gessies, and have added micronutrients, too. Seems to work pretty well and I don't have 4 or 5 different kinds of fert to juggle.
oooooooh aaaaah! Don't you just love the yellow blooms! How much fun when we find a bloom........
Well, as it turns out... my most recent bloom couldn't wait until the official anticipated "blooming ceremony" of March 3rd. This is my first time growing this particular species and I'm happy to announce that my wife has given me permission to grow it indoors all year round :)
My son Alden was born on the 28th and weighs in at 8lbs 11ozs.
AWWWWW MullettMan! What a SPECTACULAR Species to grow :)
LOTS of learning, heartaches and joys with that particular species, but certainly worth every minute!
I hope you enjoy watching him grow and blossom into a beautiful young man!!!
Lin, I LOVE LOVE your chirita! That yellow is SO pretty :)
Kim
Oh he's a handsome fellow Mullettman! Take care of him AND your wife! 8 -11oz whew!
Congatulations to you both!
First baby weighing in at almost 9 lbs, you better be real nice to your lovely wife!! (LOL)
He is precious and just as perfect as he can be. Alden looks like he is several weeks old and we are so happy for you!
BAbies change your life forever and are worth every sleepless night you spend!!
CONGRATULATIONS TO BOTH OF YOU
GAIL
Congratulations on your handsome "little mullettman"! What a precious gift. You and your wife are blessed! May the years ahead hold much joy for you and your family!
I stay so busy with my gessies i don't know anyone on the other threads so I post here with my friends! (LOL)
I found a new hoya bloom today and an orchid trying to bloom.........yeah!
There are 8 kinds of hoyas in this one basket so I have no earthly idea what it is.........should have waited a couple of days for it to completely open.
Gail: I hope you will post another photo when they are fully open! I bet that basket with 8 different hoyas is Awesome! Maybe you will have a bunch of fragrant blooms in there! I see that orchid has 2 bloom stalks! Yay! Can't wait to see those blooms! I used to cut off all bloom stalks on my orchids after they dropped all blooms. Then I read somewhere to leave the stalks because a lot of times they will re-bloom from those same stalks ... so glad I saw that cause I have had a couple put out new buds from the same stalks.
Gail,
Congratulations on your buds :)
If you could, take a picture of your hoya leaf :)
I could TRY to guess it for you :)
I don't have many of the newer ones but if it's an older variety I could possibly put a name on her for you.
I THINK I can see the leaves and have a guess but I'm not 100% sure without a leaf shot :)
Congratulations my friend! Great growing!
Kimber
Mullettman,
That is the best "bloom" pic of the day! Congratulations!! They are all little blessings. Have fun with the little one.
Laura
Mulletman. What a nice picture. So sweet.
My husband and I were in Boerne for two days. Went to Ken's AV nursery. What a fun place! We bought violets and orchids and violet supplies. I bought two jewel orchids. What a haul. I will take photos soon. We just got home a while ago. We took my little doggie. I bathed her, then me and rested. Hubby is making supper. We stayed in a B&B in Comfort. Nice time but I am SOOOOOOOO TIRED. Sally
Gail- You know there are Hoya addicts around here as well!
What a nice big bud on that Hoya- Can't wait to see it open! I have a guess on your Hoya too. So show us a pic of those leaves!
And way to grow an orchid- Re-bloomin gan old spike and a new spike too! Want to see pics of those open too!
Oooh Sally, is that the nursery in Boerne that Gessiegail has told us about it in other threads? That is one place I would love to visit!
Sally, Sally , Sally , you went to Ken's without me?????????? I have been dying for a jewel orchid for so long. I saw one at Green Gate in Seguin in the fall and I didn't buy it. It was gone when I got back up there.
I will get a closeup of the foliage on the hoya tomorrow, Kim................
I am sure it is the same nursery. Lots of fun today. Very nice people too.
Sorry! They had at least three kinds of Jewel orchids. The orchids all looked great, most blooming. Our orchids are starting to all bloom here at home. I got two kinds of the Jewels. I will pot them together, they will look neat together.
Gail, I thought you posted a photo of a Jewel Orchid awhile back? I must be thinking of someone else. I have one that I've had for a long time and it just doesn't grow very fast. I have a piece of it I put in the terrarium and I'm getting ready to tear the terrarium apart to re-do it. Gail, I will send it to you! I still owe you BIG TIME for all the nice plants you've sent me! So, your name is on this little Jewel Orchid that will be coming out of my 10 gal aquarium/terrarium in the near future!
What's your weather like there?
Sally- What different kinds of Jewel Orchid did you get?
I have the most common one- Ludisia- but some of the others are supposed to be more difficult. I've always wanted to try a different one. But it's not like it is where ya'll live, where you can get all kinds of neat plants anywhere. Not much is offered here.
Ludisia is the one I have too. Wow! I would love for mine to look like some of these in PF that are blooming! Gorgeous! http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/showimage/183345/
I found this one in PF called Jewel Orchid too and I really like the looks of the foliage: http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/2600/
Oh my gosh, Lin.............I didn't even know that they bloomed.............I just loved the foliage............
Sally, you are too nice...........................to offer yours in the terrarium........I may have to make a trip to Boerne soon...................it is only an hour from my daughter's house in New Braunfels................and get some!
LOL Gail, it's me, not Sally who's got your name on the one I'm taking out of my terrarium! Even if you get to that nursery in Boerne, I will still send this small one to you. The way you grow, I know it will probably triple in size in no time at all!
I am so excited, Lin. I have wanted one forever...........I will send you a surprise!!!!!!!!!!!
How gorgeous Lin....................where do you find those..............where they sell Orchids????????
Wal-Mart for $12.99!!
Oh Lin- I'm so jealous! I've always wanted a Nun's Orchid! Wal-Marts around here don't have the good stuff....
Wow second pic absolutley beautiful! Nice shot
Thanks Diane! I love this plant! I found it at Wal-Mart about 3 weeks ago. Last week I was in there and they had none left! :( I should have bought a few when I first saw them! Maybe they will get more in - I will keep my eyes out for them. If I find more, as I divide them to plant in the yard I will save a few bulbs for trading!
